Nearly all Sikhs are descendants of ancestors that were originally Hindus rather than Muslims. Many are Jats (a farming people that have a history of standing up to persecution). Until the Indian government invasion of the Golden Temple in 1984 many Sikhs didnâ™t even regard themselves as belonging to a distinct religious community. Sikhism has an importance far beyond those numbers because Sikhs have played a disproportionately large role in the armed forces and public affairs in India for the last 400 years. Although most Indian Sikhs (79 percent) remain c The history of Sikhism started with Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Guru in the fifteenth century in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent. The religious practices were formalised by Guru Gobind Singh Ji on 13 April 1699. The latter baptised five persons from different social backgrounds to form Khalsa (ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ). The first five, Pure Ones, then baptised Gobind Singh into the Khalsa fold. This gives the order of Khalsa, a history of around 300 years. Sikh religion was founded by Guru Nanak Dev towards the end of the fifteenth century. This great holy man was born in 1469 A.D. A study of history of the period reveals that Bhakti Movement was in full swing in India then and religious leaders of various traditions were engaged in disseminating their message throughout the country.

He emphasized that integrated water resources management was essential for ensuring optimum development of water resources in the country for which environmental, social and economic aspects should be integral part of the project formulation, planning and implementation. A specialist in Punjabi politics at the University of Missouri told the Research Directorate in 28 February 2006 correspondence that he had little information on the current activities of the AISSF. The AISSF is described in a report on terrorism by the Mackenzie Institute, an independent organization focusing on issues of political instability and organized violence (Mackenzie Institute n.d.), as the old student wing of the Akali Dal party (Mackenzie Institute May 2003, Ch. 2), while the European Country of Origin Information Network (ECOI.net) Website includes the AISSF on a list of militant groups in India (ECOI.net 9 Mar. 2006). According to the Mackenzie Institute, by the 1980s, the AISSF had perpetrated a series of robberies, assassinations and bombings "in the name of Khalistan" (ibid.). The AISSF was divided into two factions, one led by Daljit Singh Bittoo (also Bittu) (Professor emeritus 28 Feb. 2006; The Tribune 28 Sept. 2005; The Sikh Times 7 Oct. 2005; Mackenzie Institute May 2003, Ch. 2), and the other by Manjit Singh (ibid.). Manjit Singh reportedly led the more violent of the two factions, and was believed to have been involved in the 1985 bombing of Air India Flight 182 (ibid.).

The Sikh notion of sovereignty is at the heart of the intersection of religious and secular domains, and this relationship is examined empirically and theoretically. In particular, the conception of m¯ır¯ı-p¯ır¯ı is presented as a possible explanation for understanding the ‘new developments’ in contemporary Sikh politics in India. Introduction The purpose of this essay is to look at the changing dynamics of the intersection of religion and politics at various historical junctures in the evolution of the Sikh tradition, thereby understanding the more recent developments in Sikh politics in the Punjab. Notably, the distinction between the public and private spheres did not exist in the early Sikh tradition prior to the colonial rule of the early 19th century. The Sikh Gurus mediated the two spaces as one. For them and for societies of that time in India, this division did not exist. This is the same division as between religion and politics, or between church and state. In recent studies, “religion” is not considered simply a belief system or a purely interior impulse secreted away in the human soul and limited to the private sphere, or an institutional force separable from other non-religious or secular forces in the public domain.
