Nearly all Sikhs are descendants of ancestors that were originally Hindus rather than Muslims. Many are Jats (a farming people that have a history of standing up to persecution). Until the Indian government invasion of the Golden Temple in 1984 many Sikhs didnâ™t even regard themselves as belonging to a distinct religious community. Sikhism has an importance far beyond those numbers because Sikhs have played a disproportionately large role in the armed forces and public affairs in India for the last 400 years. Enumerating the challenges in the water sector, he called for a common integrated approach governed by certain basic principles so that the concerns get addressed uniformly in different parts of the country, ensuring equity and social justice. He emphasized that integrated water resources management was essential for ensuring optimum development of water resources in the country for which environmental, social and economic aspects should be integral part of the project formulation, planning and implementation. The AISSF is described in a report on terrorism by the Mackenzie Institute, an independent organization focusing on issues of political instability and organized violence (Mackenzie Institute n.d.), as the old student wing of the Akali Dal party (Mackenzie Institute May 2003, Ch. 2), while the European Country of Origin Information Network (ECOI.net) Website includes the AISSF on a list of militant groups in India (ECOI.net 9 Mar. 2006). Manjit Singh reportedly led the more violent of the two factions, and was believed to have been involved in the 1985 bombing of Air India Flight 182 (ibid.).

The Sikh notion of sovereignty is at the heart of the intersection of religious and secular domains, and this relationship is examined empirically and theoretically. In particular, the conception of m¯ır¯ı-p¯ır¯ı is presented as a possible explanation for understanding the ‘new developments’ in contemporary Sikh politics in India. Introduction The purpose of this essay is to look at the changing dynamics of the intersection of religion and politics at various historical junctures in the evolution of the Sikh tradition, thereby understanding the more recent developments in Sikh politics in the Punjab. Notably, the distinction between the public and private spheres did not exist in the early Sikh tradition prior to the colonial rule of the early 19th century. The Sikh Gurus mediated the two spaces as one. For them and for societies of that time in India, this division did not exist. This is the same division as between religion and politics, or between church and state. In recent studies, “religion” is not considered simply a belief system or a purely interior impulse secreted away in the human soul and limited to the private sphere, or an institutional force separable from other non-religious or secular forces in the public domain.
