TRAVEL INSURANCE INFORMATION

Travel Insurance is required for all tours with Wild Planet Adventures. We expect that every guest has insurance that covers at minimum: Cancellation and curtailment; medical costs (including full hospital costs and expenses in even of contracting COVID-19); personal accident or death; from the point of evacuation to the nearest best hospital and back home. TravelSafe Insurance and Trawick International service all of Wild Planet’s adventures. Most of our clients choose the TravelSafe’s “Classic” plan or Trawick’s “Voyager” or “First-Class” programs, which offer the option to add a “cancel for any reason” clause at additional cost. To qualify for covered pre-existing medical conditions and the “cancel for any reason” additional coverage, you must purchase the Classic or Voyager policy within 21 days of making your initial deposit payment, or the First Class policy within 10 days of making your initial deposit. If you have questions about TravelSafe or Trawick International, please contact them directly using the contact information below.

IMPORTANT: If your trip was previously postponed, under special arrangements, due to Covid-19, please be aware that many travel insurance companies will not cover a postponed trip. We strongly advise, however, that you find one that does.

Travel insurance typically covers many contingencies you may encounter in adventure travel. They include emergency evacuation from remote areas, repatriation, emergency medical care, additional costs due to lost baggage, inclement weather, quarantine, strike, lost or stolen passports, natural or political disaster, trip or flight cancellation and many other unforeseen problems. While the chances of any of these are infrequent, the consequences can be extremely expensive.

IMPORTANT: If, for any reason, you do not purchase travel insurance for any condition or circumstance that falls outside of Wild Planet’s responsibilities as indicated in our releases, contracts, and terms and conditions; including but not limited to acts of God, pandemics, natural disasters, economic collapse, or any other condition or circumstance beyond our control; you assume all risks, any losses or expenses as tour rates provide for the arrangements only for the time and services stated. Wild Planet Adventures is not a travel insurance company nor are you paying us for travel insurance services. In the event travel insurance does not cover your loss, your acceptance of our terms and conditions includes your full assumption of any such loss.

Wild Planet Adventures’ travel insurance requirements are subject to change without notice. Please check with our Operations Manager to make sure you are covered under current requirements.

TIPS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO The Most Important Tip for a Great Travel Experience: Travel in a foreign country requires one to be flexible and patient . International travel can test even the most seasoned travelers. The infrastructure may not live up to the standards we are used to in America. The methods of doing business may sometimes seem unusual. Road conditions may be poor, the conveniences we are used to may not be as available even when promised, and even people with the best intention may not be able to deliver what we expect of them. Logistics, conditions, timing and nature herself further complicate even the most carefully laid out of plans. But that is all part of the adventure!

That said, you might also discover why world travel has been seen as one of the many paths to spiritual enlightenment. The combination of being so close to nature and wildlife, appreciating how other cultures live, and the presence of mind to experience yourself in ways that are unfamiliar to you can be either disconcerting or expand your horizons considerably, depending mostly on your perspective. An ability to “go with the flow” will go a long way in setting the stage for experiences that open the heart and mind in most unexpected -- and beautiful -- ways. This, therefore, is our Most Important Tip: Go with the flow! We hope that it will help you create a more intimate experience of yourself as a part of nature, not separate from it. We know that no matter what we see and do, if you experience yourself as powerfully alive you will return transformed forever.

ARRIVAL INSTRUCTIONS On the day of departure, please be at the airport in Quito or Guayaquil two hours before departure for check-in. A message will be left at your hotel the evening prior with the exact time to check-in. Before you check-in, you must first have your bags screened by SICGAL, the Galapagos Inspection and Quarantine System. Passengers cannot bring any plant, animal, or agricultural products (fruit, vegetables, or seeds). Do not stand in line to pay for the INGALA fee unless you have not prepaid. Look for the Ecoventura representative to assist you at the AVIANCA ticket counter and collect your boarding pass, transit card (if prepaid), and digital safe passenger form.

We will send you the flight schedules between Quito, Guayaquil and San Cristobal as your departure date grows near. Since flight schedules change often, please check with our office in Ecuador upon arrival to verify the correct flight times and to reconfirm your flight. If you plan to arrive late at night, please check at your hotel for a message from Ecoventura regarding any possible change to the flight schedule.

VISAS Only a valid passport is required to enter Ecuador. However, passports must be valid for six months after you intend to leave Ecuador. You must also be able to provide proof of onward travel, such as an airline ticket. No Visa is required for visitors from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and most European countries. Visas are required for some Asian, Central American and Eastern European countries. It is the passenger's responsibility to check with the Embassy of Ecuador ( www.ecuador.org ) prior to sailing to determine if a visa is necessary.

All international travelers will be required to provide proof of international health insurance, active throughout ones stay in Ecuador.

LUGGAGE RESTRICTIONS For international flights, please check with your carrier. Avianca Airline allows one checked suitcase (up to 50 lbs./ 23 kg and up to 62″/ 158 cm) and one carry-on bag (up to 22 lbs./ 10 kg and up to 45″/ 115 cm) per passenger. All overweight, oversized and excess baggage will be charged additional and are checked subject to space available. The fee to check a second bag is $32 + IVA for up to 70 lbs/ 32 Kg. 10 369 -B 3 rd Street #405 San Rafael, CA 94901 1-800 -990 -4376 [email protected]

Excess Baggage fee: $45 + IVA for up to 50 lbs/ 23 kg, $60 + IVA 51-70 lbs/ 23-32 kg, $80 + IVA 70-99 lbs/ 32-45 kg. Overweight baggage fee: $60 + IVA 50-70 lbs/ 23-32 kg, $80 + IVA 70-99 lbs/ 32-45 kg. Oversize baggage fee: $80 + IVA for 62-90.5″/ 159-230 cm. IVA (tax) is 12% and subject to change

VACCINATIONS You should visit your doctor or travel medicine clinic 4-6 weeks prior to your departure date to get vaccines or medicines you may need for your trip. You can read more detailed, country-specific information on vaccinations and health in Ecuado on the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) website at www.cdc.gov . Specific questions on anything pertaining to tropical diseases and their prevention should be addressed to them. You must check the CDC web site in advance of your trip to be sure you are current .

Required Yellow Fever – The government of Ecuador requires proof of yellow fever vaccination upon arrival if you are traveling from a country with risk of yellow fever. Please consult the CDC ( www.cdc.gov ) to get the most current list of countries with risk of the yellow fever virus.

Recommended • Routine vaccines: measles-mumps-rubella, diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus, and varicella (chickenpox). • Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Typhoid are recommended. • Malaria is not present in Guayaquil, Quito, or the Galapagos Islands. If you plan to visit other areas of Ecuador, please consult your doctor or travel medicine clinic to determine if anti-malarial medication is needed.

TIPS ON HEALTH, SAFETY AND ETIQUETTE IN THE WILDERNESS While most of our activities are extremely safe, there are risks involved in any adventure activity. Know and respect your own physical limits before undertaking any strenuous activity. Be prepared for fluctuations in and sudden rains - this is the wilderness after all! Make sure to bring plenty of sunscreen when you’re out on the islands.

EEEEEK! SNAKES! BUGS! BATS! WEIRD CREEPY CRAWLY THINGIES! Although the Galapgos has several species of venomous snakes, as well as a large variety of crawling critters, your chances of being bitten are minimal, especially if you refrain from wandering in tall grass or sticking your hands into hives, behind piles of dry sticks, or under rocks. Remember that it really is a jungle out there! Don’t go poking under rocks or fallen branches without a guide. Snakebites are extremely rare, but don’t do anything to increase the odds. If you do encounter a snake, stay calm, don’t make any sudden movements, and do NOT try to handle it. Back off slowly and gradually the way you came. If you really want to see a deadly fer-de-lance or eyelash viper, you may be disappointed; like any other animals, most snakes tend to be quite shy, as well as nocturnal. While few animals are aggressive unless provoked, there ARE exceptions. The best attitude you can have is one of respect. Also, avoid swimming in major rivers unless a guide or local operator can vouch for their safety.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONING Wild Planet’s Eco-Tours are designed for flexible, energetic people who have a healthy dose of curiosity and enthusiasm about our world, and who like to be active. The most important requirements are a spirit of adventure and a positive attitude! This trip will be enjoyed by anyone who has an interest in nature and wildlife, natural history and the outdoors. While this trip is not strenuous, it is active and we suggest you be in good physical shape for maximum enjoyment.

The majority of our Galapagos travelers are healthy, active and reasonably fit. Guests who are able to walk a few hours a day unassisted will be able to enjoy Galapagos fully. Some of the excursions require more physical activity involving short steep climbs or long walks in hot weather or uneven or rocky trails. However, most excursions require moderate activity, and the walks are at a leisurely pace. Entering and exiting the Zodiacs while in deep water requires that you pull yourself up on a ladder. Snorkeling is offered with easy access from the beach and in more challenging deeper water. Snorkeling, kayaking, and SUPs are optional water activities provided before or after the guided excursions. If you are concerned about your ability to do any excursion, please consult with the naturalist before disembarkation. To enjoy your trip to its fullest potential, it is always a good idea to exercise before your trip, such as walking, swimming, or bicycling. Please see your doctor for a check-up before traveling to Ecuador. Any medical condition or physical disability that may require special attention or treatment must be addressed immediately.

MEDICAL FACILITIES ON BOARD The yachts carry kits and medical supplies. The Captain and the guides are trained in basic first aid procedures. All vessels have radio contact with the mainland for medical emergencies.

MOTION SICKNESS Due to strong currents, there will be moderate movement of the vessel while navigating. Most passengers are not affected. However, if you are prone to seasickness, we strongly urge you bring some type of medication to prevent .

AIR CIRCULATION Each stateroom has an individual air-conditioning unit that eliminates recycled air pumped through the entire deck from one shared system often found on larger vessels. In addition, machines are activated daily in each cabin and twice daily in the main deck social areas.

WATER Filtered drinking water is provided in your cabin in an acrylic water container and during meals. We suggest you do not drink water from the tap in your sink. A reusable metal water bottle is provided that you can take home. The bottles can be refilled from the water container located in the dining room.

12 369 -B 3 rd Street #405 San Rafael, CA 94901 1-800 -990 -4376 [email protected]

TIP: Your local natural market, health food store, or vitamin shop may carry a natural product called Grapefruit Seed Extract. Other names include Naturbiotic Citricidal GSE. This totally natural product is a wonder for both prevention and treatment of all sorts of intestinal problems. It kills a long list of bacteria and protozoa, including Giardia, when used properly! 2-4 tablets of Grapefruit Seed extract with water once or twice each day acts as a prophylactic and will go a long way in preventing Montezuma’s Revenge and other intestinal upset. Highly recommended.

SAFETY BOXES Leave your valuables at home! Leave any expensive or flashy jewelry or flashy clothes at home (and even not-so-expensive jewelry.) The yachts do not have safety boxes and cabins lock from the inside only. Make 2 photocopies of your passport picture page and your driver’s license and keep them separate from your passport.

MONEY / CURRENCY Ecuador’s unit of currency is the US dollar. It is recommended that you bring new or undamaged bills, as torn or heavily crinkled bills are not accepted. Aboard the yachts cash (US Dollars), Travelers checks, Master Card, VISA, American Express and Diners are accepted. Preference of payment is in that order. Some of the larger banks in Guayaquil and Quito will have ATMS that can withdraw funds using Visa cards – be sure you know your PIN number. Credit cards are becoming more widely accepted, however should not be relied on. If you plan to use a credit or debit card, remember to call your bank in advance of your trip and let them know you will be using the card internationally. If you don’t do this, banks will sometimes flag your account for fraudulent activity when you use your card abroad and it can be difficult to have the fraud alert lifted quickly.

TIPPING Gratuities for Wild Planet trip leaders, guides, drivers or any of our Galapagos staff or partners are appreciated, but left entirely up to your discretion. While the cost of services is paid for in all cases, most professionals in tour industry rely on tips for their bread and butter. When asked 'how much' we recommend from US$300 to US$350 per person per week. Gratuities will be divided among all crewmembers, including naturalist guides. The gratuity may be added to your on board account and paid with a credit card (MasterCard or Visa Only), although the crew greatly appreciates tips in cash.

WEATHER CONDITIONS Located on the equator, the Galapagos Islands have a surprisingly cool, sub-tropical climate. The larger islands with volcanic peaks have a variety of climatic zones. The coastal areas are arid and covered with plants adapted to desert conditions. The highland areas receive moisture almost all year round, which support lush vegetation. Temperatures are determined almost entirely by ocean currents, which are influenced by the trade winds.

There are two seasons, both of which have some precipitation. The Galapagos get an average of ten inches of rain per year, so it is never considered "rainy". During the months of December to May, the cooling currents subside, temperatures rise and the climate is warm and sunny with occasional showers. 15 369 -B 3 rd Street #405 San Rafael, CA 94901 1-800 -990 -4376 [email protected] In June, the trend begins toward cooler temperatures with moderate breezes, which continue through November. This period is often referred to as the "garua" (pronounced gah-ru-ah) season, which means mist in Spanish.

ISLAND VISITS The vessels anchor offshore at two visitor sites or Islands per day. Passengers are ferried to the landing point in Zodiac style inflatable landing craft. The landings are either wet (where one must step into water anywhere from your ankles to your knees and wade to shore) or dry (where one steps from the panga directly to the volcanic rock). Your guide and Zodiac driver will assist you with a steady hand. On the Islands, one follows marked trails set by the National Park walking at a leisurely pace. You will spend 3-4 hours at each site allowing plenty of time to explore and photograph the wildlife.

ITINERARY Ecoventura reserves the right at its sole option and discretion and that of the Captain of the vessel or National Park impact studies without liability for damages or refund of any kind to deviate from the vessel's advertised or ordinary itinerary for any reason including mechanical failure. Ecoventura will not be held responsible for any refund whatsoever for changes to the printed or scheduled itinerary. As of August 2020, we will not visit the Darwin Station and highlands of Santa Cruz to avoid populated towns and will substitute these visits with Sombrero Chino and Sullivan Bay until further notice.

SMOKING POLICY Smoking is prohibited in enclosed areas aboard the vessels & on the Islands. Smoking cigarettes, cigars, or vaping is only allowed on an outside deck in one designated smoking area.

These rules require that you do not disturb or remove anything (not even a rock or shell), do not touch or feed the animals, do not leave any liter and stay on the marked trails. Please show a conservationist attitude!

ABOUT YOUR GUIDES Your guides are your gateway to the world of the eco-tour. You’ll laugh; you’ll cry; and you’ll learn. Each guide’s personality colors your experience of the Galapagos, and reveals the richness and diversity of its people and culture. Guides provide education, insight into the culture, and knowledge of nature. Travelers who have decided to go it alone often end up wishing they had a guide.

Wild Planet strives to use the best local guides available at each destination on your adventure. At times, naturalists, biologists or biology students may be used as guides but are not guaranteed, nor are they always the best guides for the activity. You’ll find our guides have just the right mix of personality, knowledge and training to make your experience fun, safe, educational, and full of wonder. We’ve found that the best guides are the ones who live at each location and absolutely love what they are doing. Their enthusiasm and curiosity is contagious and will awaken the wonder—and the guide—in you. You’ll find that spotting the wildlife yourself is half the fun! In addition to your guides, we’ll have bird and wildlife books and materials to help us identify what we see. With thousands of different species of flora and fauna in each area of the country, and new species being identified, a rare siting could be the highlight of your trip!

BINOCULARS Although one pair of binoculars will be provided per guestroom, you may wish to bring your own. Binoculars are to a wildlife-viewing tour what a bicycle is to a bicycle tour. They are the difference between being moved to tears watching a female primate teaching her young how to walk, or being frustrated because you can’t see the details, colors, or expressions on their faces. We strongly suggest you bring appropriate wildlife-viewing binoculars.

The world of binoculars can be very confusing, so here is a crash course: Avoid compact binoculars of any kind. The field of vision is too small, which means it will be harder to find wildlife and then stay focused on it when it moves. Compact binocs also let in less light, which means less detail, less color, and an overall experience of frustration. Despite this, very often people try to save money with compact binoculars and within a few days feel frustrated or even loose interest in some of the smaller animals because they can’t see them clearly. Your trip of a lifetime may then become less full of the awe and wonder that the nature has to offer. 17 369 -B 3 rd Street #405 San Rafael, CA 94901 1-800 -990 -4376 [email protected]

We highly recommend Nikon Monarch 8 x 42 or 10 x 42

In an 8 x 42 binocular, the first number, 8, is the magnification, the second number, 42, corresponds to the field of vision. Anything less than 8x will make details and colors very hard to see. That doesn’t mean that a 10x is better! 10x magnification will focus in on the object, limiting your field of view and increasing shakiness if your hands aren’t steady. 10x are very good IF your hands are very steady. They are also more viable if you have a more expensive pair that lets in lots of light and has a larger field of vision. Still, 8x is the preferred magnification for most wildlife and birdwatching. For the second number, the field of vision, anything less than a 40 will make it difficult to pick out wildlife, especially if it is moving. A 42 or 50 make this much easier. Other factors to consider are the size of the opening by your eye, which relates to how much light reaches your eye and therefore how much detail and color you see. You will be amazed how much easier and clearly you can make out colors with a better pair of binoculars.

ECOTOURISM ETHICS AND GUIDELINES “,” “sustainable tourism” and “responsible tourism” are terms used to describe tourism that focuses on appreciation and preservation of a country’s flora, fauna, ecosystems and culture. This kind of sustainable tourism is a cooperative effort in which the tourist plays a crucial role. You, the tourist, can help ensure the success of Ecuadorian ecotourism by considering the ethical tourism guidelines listed below. We hope that you will take the time to learn as much about the Galapagos as possible, before, after and during your visit.

WILDERNESS AREA AND WILDLIFE HABITAT PROTECTION Travel to wilderness areas is best undertaken in the company of trained and experienced local guides (some areas permit only guided tours for the protection of both habitat and visitors). When hiking in wilderness or conservation areas, stay on the trail. Don’t trample delicate vegetation or remove any form of plant life. Stay on the periphery of animal assemblages and bird colonies. Don’t approach, surround or chase animals you may observe on the trail in order to obtain a photograph. In marine environments, don’t get between an animal and the water’s edge. Never remove animals or birds from burrows, dens, caves, nests or tree cavities; or come between an animal or bird parent and its young. (It goes without saying that capturing or hunting animals or birds is both illegal and wrong...if you should observe such conduct, report it to the local law enforcement authorities). Waste of any type must be disposed of in designated waste disposal containers and/or landfills. You must pack it out and transport it to a suitable facility (local guides can advise you where waste disposal is permitted.) Obey regulations regarding areas closed to the public. Do not interfere with ongoing scientific research areas. Be quiet and nonintrusive (you’ll be rewarded by the natural concert of the sounds of nature.)

PROTECTED SPECIES AND ARTIFACTS Do not purchase products derived from the killing of protected animal species of any kind. Report any attempts to sell you such products to local law enforcement authorities.

CULTURAL SENSITIVITY Be sensitive to local cultural norms. Conduct that may be acceptable in certain European or American communities (i.e.; drug use, nude sunbathing) is not appropriate in Ecuador.
