Vital Statistics Report Region I (Ilocos Region): 2nd Quarter of 2017 Date of Release: September 29, 2017 Reference No. 2017- 19 Birth Statistics The number of registered live births in Region I (Ilocos Region) during the second quarter of 2017 summed up to 23,007, a decrease of 3.3 percent compared to 23,796 births on the same period of 2016. The daily average birth occurrence during the second quarter of 2017 was computed at 261 births or an average of 11 babies born per hour. The month of May was observed to have the highest average daily births at 273 and 272 babies during the second quarter of 2016 and 2017, respectively. TABLE 1. The percent share of the total births in May to the quarterly totals were 35.5 percent in 2016 and 36.6 percent in 2017. The month of April was observed to have the least number of registered live births at 7,228 and 6,641 during the second quarter of 2016 and 201, respectively. FIGURE 1. Its share was more than half (62.9 percent share) of the total registered births in Region I. The province of La Union ranked second with 3,119 births (13.6 percent share), followed by the province of Ilocos Sur with 2,858 births (12.4 percent share) and the province of Ilocos Norte with 2,556 (11.1 percent share). This was followed by Dagupan City, Pangasinan with 2,181 births; City of San Fernando, La Union with 1,574 births; City of Urdaneta, Pangasinan with 1,447 births; and City of Alaminos, Pangasinan with 1,047 births. It was also observed that San Carlos City has 219 registered births higher than the total registered births in the province of Ilocos Norte in the second quarter of 2017. On the other hand, San Esteban, Ilocos Sur had the lowest number of registered live birth in second quarter of 2017 with only one (1) registered birth. It was followed by Adams, Ilocos Norte, Carasi, Ilocos Norte, Dumalneg, Ilocos Norte, Lidlidda, Ilocos Sur and Sigay, Ilocos Sur with three (3) registered live births each and Banayoyo, Ilocos Sur with five (5) registered births. Number of Registered Live Births by Sex and by City/Municipality Region I (Ilocos Region): 2nd Quarter 2017 SOURCE: Preliminary results from the Decentralized Vital Statistics System 2011 Males (11,839) outnumbered females (11,168) in terms of registered live births during the second quarter of 2017, resulting to a sex ratio of 106 males per 100 females. Three (3) provinces posted a sex ratio that is higher than the regional ratio. The highest sex ratio of 1,511 males per 1,347 females was recorded in Ilocos Sur. This was followed by Ilocos Norte with 110 and La Union with 108. On the other hand, the lowest sex ratio of 7,373 males per 7,101 females was recorded in the province of Pangasinan. Marriage Statistics There were 9,120 marriages registered during the second quarter of 2017, showing a decrease of 1.6 percent from the figure on the same period last year of 9,267 marriages. Two (2) provinces recorded an increase in the number of registered marriages from second quarter of 2016 to second quarter of 2017. A bigger increase was noted in Ilocos Sur from 1,516 to 1,582 marriages (4.4 percent). While that of Pangasinan increased from 5,106 to 5,177 marriages (1.4 percent). On the other hand, the provinces that posted a decrease in the number of registered marriages were La Union from 1,540 to 1,355 (12.0 percent) and Ilocos Norte from 1,105 to 1,006 (9.0 percent). The province of Pangasinan remained with the most number of registered marriages in the region. Ilocos Sur ranked second with 1,582 (17.3 percent share) followed by La Union with 1,355 (14.9 percent share). In 2016, La Union ranked second with 1,540 marriages (16.6 percent share) while Ilocos Sur ranked third with 1,516 marriages (16.4 percent share). TABLE 4. It corresponds to a daily average of 117 registered marriages which surpassed the regional daily average number during the quarter. In the same period of last year, April was the most preferred month to tie the knot with a total of 3,937 marriages translating to a daily average of 131 registered marriages. The least number of marriage occurrences during the second quarters of 2017 and 2016 was recorded in June posting a daily average of 84 and 72 marriage occurrences, respectively. TABLE 5. The figure indicated a decrease of 2.5 percent death occurrences from the 2016 figure of 8,672. The province of Pangasinan ranked first in terms of the number of registered deaths during the second quarter 2017, with a total of 4,858 or 57.5 percent share of the total registered deaths in the region. La Union placed second with 1,345 registered deaths (15.9 percent share), followed by Ilocos Sur with 1,181 (14.0 percent share) and Ilocos Norte with 1,068 (12.6 percent share). In the same quarter of 2016, Pangasinan recorded 5,069 deaths or 58.5 percent of the total registered deaths in the region. La Union registered 1,357 (15.6 percent share), Ilocos Sur with 1,195 (13.8 percent share) and Ilocos Norte with 1,051 (12.1 percent share). TABLE 6.
