The students were asked to give reasons for their discipline problems in high school. They were also asked to give their perspectives on various forms of popular culture. Questions regarding television, movies, music, video games, and sports were posed to determine the participants' interest level in each of the areas. The students were then asked to gauge how much these interests had taken away from their schoolwork. The students' perceptions and life experiences were explored in depth via the interview process. In general, the lives of these students had been impacted in some way by some form of popular culture. There has been a tendency in recent literature to decry the influence of the media on today’s youth; this seems to be borne out by some of the statements made by these students. Throughout the interview process, they stated that their lives had been both positively and negatively influenced by their culture despite the beliefs held by many parents, teachers, and administrators that popular culture has a strong negative impact on their lives. The implications for the future include ways that educators can incorporate popular culture and the media into the curriculum effectively. Additionally, teachers, administrators, and parents 2 need to gain a better understanding of how important popular culture is to adolescents and how they can combat its negative effects while keeping students interested in school. 3 DEDICATION This work is dedicated to the two most important people in my life: my two best friends. Is it possible that students’ familiarity with songs might enable them to connect a song with a book and aid interpretation that way? This study attempted to explore the possibility of bridging songs to literary texts in my Community College English classroom, to ascertain if or how the use of song can support or extend students’ interpretive strategies across different types of texts. I investigated how songs might work as a bridge to other texts, like novels, and, if the students use songs as texts, to what extent do the students develop and hone their interpretative skills? Because of this, how might including songs as texts in English writing or English Literature curriculum contribute to the enhancement of students’ writing? The students’ responses disclosed that the songs appealed to their cognition and memories and helped them to interpret and write about the novels they read. Moreover, the students’ responses revealed that pairing or matching songs with novels strengthened interpretation of the book in a plethora of ways, such as meta-message deduction, applying contexts, applying comparisons, and examining thematic correlations.

    Louisiana Musical Legends Bringing Louisiana Musicians into the Classroom a project of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and 64 Parishes presented in partnership with First Lady Donna Edwards and the Louisiana Regional Arts Councils Susan Aysen Instructional Plan Lesson Plan Author: Rebecca Holmes Target Grade Level: 3rd and 8th Grade Regional Arts Council Partner: Bayou Regional Arts Council Notes from Lesson Plan Author: In researching Susan Aysen, I discovered she is a clarinet player and songwriter and resolved to interview her about her songwriting process, inspirations, and influences. Because there are few resources about Aysen available online, I have included a lightly edited transcript of the interview as well as lyrics to two of her songs, “Ghosts of Laurel Valley” and “Good Night, Louisiana,” at the end of the lesson plan. Focusing the lesson plan on songwriting allows for connections not only to music content but also to ELA. Aysen’s personal responses to interview questions yielded significant connections to the regional culture and provided rich examples of relevant creative influences. Center for International Education May, 2012 1 ABSTRACT The main focus of the research for my Master’s Project has been children who sojourn in a different culture for several years. When studying social phenomena, social scientists often focus on adults, representing their perceptions and attitudes towards these phenomena. Children are assumed to follow the parents as silent absorbents of the parents’ views, decisions and attitudes. I, however, have foregrounded the perspectives and voices of children themselves. In this research, I have explored the following: • how children view their cultural identity/ies; • how they practice agency in choosing one; • how identity/ies change over time; and • what influences such changes In exploring these questions with sojourner children, the possibility for an individual to develop bicultural identity emerged.
