Dear Contributors and Readers,

The Finger Lakes is State’s largest wine producing region, 3rd largest in the United States. With over 200 wineries located around the various (great- depth) lakes, uniquely producing lush vineyards that flank their shores. Retaining residual summer warmth in the winter, and winter’s cold in the spring, the grapes are protected from various frosts producing world-renowned Chardonnays, Rieslings, Pinot Noirs, Cabernet Francs and many others. But what better way to enjoy the regions wine ambience is with summer outdoor activities such as hiking the parks, swimming at the base of a waterfall or just pairing these world class Finger Lakes wines at dozens of restaurants with outdoor dining. Take in a play; find your vibe at a local night club or an outdoor concert. Our Cover Story in this issue describes one of the jewels of our Finger Lakes region, the historic & Mansion. Sonnenberg is the most elaborate and intact example of a Country Place Era Estate (1865-1929) in our region. This now 50-acre estate is one of the few remaining in the United States distinctive for its extraordinary collections of period architecture, statuary, formal gardens, fountains and unique garden structures. When you visit Sonnenberg in Canandaigua, with its 40-room mansion and acres of land, harken back to the grandness of this summer getaway for a leading couple of the Gilded Age. “It is summertime and the livin’ is easy…You’re going to rise up singing, then you’ll spread you’re wings and take to the sky.” This evocative George Gershwin piece is how we all hope to feel with summer in full swing. Bricks for Building Your College Funding Plan Bricks for Building Your College Funding Plan By: PAMELASubmitted MORLEY by: Pamela TIERNEY Tierney

College costs continue to skyrocket – at a pace that far exceeds the rate of inflation. But there is a bright side to planning for college expenses, and it’s getting a little brighter all the time – thanks to federal tax breaks that can make paying for college more affordable. The key point to remember is that you can create a college funding plan brick by brick, by combining a variety of investment accounts, tax benefits and financial aid sources. Here is a quick guide to get you going:

 529 Plans1—State-sponsored versions of these plans are now available in all 50 states, and you aren’t limited to the plan of your own state. In a 529 Plan, you set aside after-tax dollars2 on behalf of a beneficiary, and earnings grow on a tax-deferred basis. Distributions are not taxed, if taken for qualifying education expenses. As the account owner, you maintain control of the account and may change beneficiaries, subject to restrictions. In addition to state- sponsored plans, private colleges also may set up a form of Qualified Tuition Plan that allows tuition to be prepaid.

 Education Savings Accounts—These accounts allow annual contributions of up to $2,000 per child per year. Distributions made for qualifying education expenses are tax free, and the costs of high school or elementary school tuition may qualify.

 Loans or Withdrawals from Permanent Life Insurance—Parents often find it convenient to fund part of college costs by taking loans or withdrawals from permanent life insurance contracts – i.e., life insurance with a cash value. In most contracts, loans may be taken tax free.

 Traditional IRA Withdrawals—If you have a Traditional IRA, you can make penalty-free withdrawals for purposes of paying qualifying colleges expenses for your child, grandchild or spouse (or even yourself). Ordinary income tax will apply on the amount withdrawn.

 Roth IRA Withdrawals—If you have a Roth IRA, you can make penalty-free withdrawals for qualified higher education expenses once your account has been in place for at least five years. There is no income tax due on the amount withdrawn.

 Federal Tax Credits—Many parents can use federal tax credits to meet a portion of the children’s educational costs. The American Opportunity Tax Credit applies in the first four years of post-secondary education. It’s a tax credit of up to $2,500 and applies to the cost of tuition, fees and course materials. Up to 40% of the credit (a maximum of $1,000) is refundable – meaning even if you owe no income tax for the year, you can get up to $1,000 back from the government if you qualify for this type of credit.

1 Before investing in a 529 plan, please consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses carefully before investing. The official disclosure statement and applicable prospectuses, which contains this and other information about the investment company, can be obtained from your financial professional. Be sure to read the prospectus carefully before deciding whether to invest. 2 Some states allow a state income tax deduction for 529 plan contributions.

 Deductible Interest on Student Loans—If your child needs education loans and you repay them, you may qualify to deduct up to $2,500 of the loan interest per year.3

 Employer-provided Education Benefits—Some companies have set up programs that allow the organization to contribute education benefits on behalf of workers and their children. Federal law currently allows up to $5,250 of employer-provided education benefits to be excluded from taxable income.

 Financial Aid—Today, more and more students are applying for financial aid. In most cases, students must demonstrate financial need to qualify for this type of assistance.

Time Is On Your Side

The more time you have available to save money for educational expenses, the better your chances of meeting your financial goals may be. Keep in mind, too, that the tax benefits and financial aid mentioned above may not be available to everyone. Your qualification for some of these may depend on your Modified Adjusted Gross Income. Your financial professional can help you learn more – and help you identify specific solutions that may work best to help you reach your long-term financial goals, based on your personal situation.

Enjoy Edgar’s – Fine Dining at Belhurst Castle

Belhurst Castle | 4069 West Belhurst Castle is proud to announce that Edgar’s, the restaurant in the Castle, has a brand Lake Road, Geneva, NY new dinner menu. Executive Chef Marco Ballatori has created this new menu using inspiration 14456-0609 | (315) 781-0201 from his heritage, and local fresh food to create an exciting new line up of fine food at Edgar’s. Our fine dining restaurant, Edgar’s offers superb steaks, chops and seafood amidst the unmatched beauty of our century-old castle. The new dinner menu features delectable dishes, with an array of exquisite appetizers. Within his first year, Chef Ballatori has created a new Breakfast and Dinner menu at Edgar’s, and well as most recently a new Stonecutters menu. Chef Ballatori’s inspiration for this new menu comes from a mix between his Italian heritage and local fresh foods. Growing up with an Italian family, Ballatori was brought up on homemade pasta, wine and sausage. “I learned early on nothing bought will ever taste as fresh or be made with as much love as that which is made at home. With that mindset, my heritage certainly plays a role in the amount of scratch cooking we do in the kitchen at Edgar’s” says Ballatori of his Italian heritage. Ballatori describes this new menu as “contemporary international fusion steeped in classic European technique.” His focus is on fresh, locally and sustainably sourced ingredients. He believes in simple, Chef Marco yet elegant preparations using quality components. “Edgar’s purchases CSA (consumer supported Ballatori agriculture) shares from farms in an effort to support local and organic agricultural efforts. In addition, it is not unusual for growers to stop in the kitchen with a basket of fresh from the field product. Primarily, we use these items to craft daily menu features,” says Ballatori. “This allows us to present items to our guests in a number of forms. With a CSA, you never know what you’ll get each week so it serves to keep us sharp, creatively.” Our new menu provides dishes that are equal parts accessible and delectable. “Here, you are our guest and you will be treated to a meal that we have put a great deal of consideration and love into. I believe that attention to detail comes through in every bite.” Says Ballatori. Everyone at Belhurst welcomes you to visit and enjoy our fine cuisine and breath taking views of Seneca Lake.

FINGER AUG/ SEPT 2014 - PAGE 35 LAKES WOMAN COMMUNITY

We have volunteers who are willing to speak about eating disorders to raise awareness KMB for Answers.org and we will participate in any Searching to Find Answers for Anorexia health and wellness events.

Here at Finger Lakes Woman, we have found that one of the benefits of “Community” is to assist our readers and dedicate services and informative content to educate our readers with activities throughout the region. One such activity is the growing movement to dedicate resources in order to raise needed charitable funds for important causes throughout the Finger Lakes. In loving memory of Katlyn Mary Bennett, who tragically died on June 23, 2013 after a long struggle with anorexia at the age of 25, there is a program being initiated as an “art- fueled funding” directed services campaign. The purpose of this foundation is to expand awareness, knowledge, understanding, support, and options for women who struggle with anorexia. Anorexia is a devastating disorder that shatters the individual’s life and destroys the lives and relationships of families and friends. Some will struggle for years, others will lose their battle; leaving loved ones to wonder “why.” Our goal for this art-fueled funding campaign is to provide linkages for anyone touched by this disease to help find support, treatment, understanding, and options to deal with this devastating illness. All donations will be used to help women and loved ones who are dealing with issues associated with anorexia. Our family, friends and loved ones are all struggling with questions and are passionate about helping others. The foundation is in the process of filing the necessary paperwork for tax exempt status. Once all state and federal paperwork has been filed in the coming weeks, donations will be accepted here on this foundation website. Submit your email below to receive updates so we can let you Please subscribe and leave a message on our website or know when we can accept donations.
