Wilhelm Wagenfeld (1900–1990) and Jakob Jucker (1902–1997) Table lamp, 1923–24 Made in the metal workshops of the Weimar Bauhaus Chrome-plated metal and glass Museum of Modern Art, New York IntroductIon Dominique Forest The first use of the word “design” to mean a plan or pat- tern for a manufactured object appears in nineteenth- century England, in the writings of Henry Cole, the organizer of the Great Exhibition in London in 1851— the original World’s Fair. Two years earlier, Cole had launched the Journal of Design and Manufactures in col- laboration with Richard Redgrave. The definition of “design” has evolved over time and now embraces a broad range of associations. It was in the United States, in the years before World War II, that it came to describe a creative discipline whose respective qualities and production conditions of arti- purpose was to shape products so as to enhance their sanal crafts and industrial goods. This controversy was appearance, and possibly their performance. A profes- taken up again in Germany in the early twentieth cen- sional in this field was now referred to as a “designer.” tury, and figured into the new ideas and experiments Not until the 1950s, though, did the word “design” that, in the 1920s, were synthesized in that laboratory take its place beside the term “industrial aesthetics” of forms for the modern age, the Bauhaus (plate 16). in continental Europe. Soon the expressions became From then on, a powerful tide of modernism would interchangeable, and “design” ultimately triumphed, progressively eradicate the forms and styles of the becoming commonplace in the parlance of architec- past, ultimately severing ties with tradition.

  • The Myth of Danish Design and the Implicit Claims of Labels
CHAPTER 9 The Myth of Danish Design and the Implicit Claims of Labels Stina Teilmann-Lock Until the 1950s Denmark was internationally respected only for its fairy tales and its bacon. But from the 1950s onwards design came to constitute another source of worldwide recognition. Today, fashion is a successful branch of Danish design: it produces the largest annual turnover and the greatest export of any of the creative industries in Denmark. And one thing that characterizes the many different styles of Danish fashion is that they all come with the labels ’Danish Design’ or ’Designed in Denmark’ sewn onto the clothes or attached to the price tag. Similar labels may be found on clothes from Sweden, Britain, France, and Italy as well as from numerous other Western countries where clothes have been designed – though not manufactured. And, supposedly, the unspoken proviso of the epithet affixed to the name-tags of the clothes is: ‘though manufactured elsewhere’. As such, fashion is symptomatic of a general tendency: labels reading ’Made in Denmark’, ’Made in Sweden’, ‘Made in Britain’ (and so forth) have become rare. Particular sets of rules of national and international trade law govern the marking of the ‘country of origin’ of products (WTO Agreement on Rules of Origin, 15 April 1994, Final Act of the 1986–1994 Uruguay Round of trade negotiations). Within the EU, the country of origin refers to the country where goods are ‘wholly obtained’ or ‘where they underwent their last, substantial, economically justified processing or working in an undertaking equipped for that purpose and resulting in the manufacture of a new product or representing an important stage of manufacture’ (Council Regulation [EEC] No 2913/92 of 12 October 1992 establishing the Community Customs Code, Art.

Several of the books – and most of the trade catalogues – derive from the library and collection of Lena Larsson (1919-2000), the important protagonist of modern Swedish furniture and interior design. Was she the one who wanted to ”wear and tear and throw away”? It is so unfair, that this slogan – often misunderstood – is the remaining memory of one of the most influential interior designers of the 20th century, that her versatile and humanistic message and her intrepid, creative personality have been confined to a mere cliché! Lena Larsson (1919-2000) was an interior decorator and furniture designer, a teacher at the Konstfack National College of Art and Design, a popular educator, an exhibition architect and glass designer, a debater and well-known radio personality, a jazz enthusiast.

  • DENMARK on IPANEMA the Danish Pavilion VIP AREA - DANISH PAVILION IPANEMA
DENMARK ON IPANEMA The Danish Pavilion VIP AREA - DANISH PAVILION IPANEMA Danish Interior Design Denmark is one of the most exciting design environments in the world. The desire to improve, simplify and find new correlations between form and functionality has been the guiding principle of Danish design for generations. In Denmark, quality design graces airports, trains, buses and the entire infrastructure, not to mention the interior design of public and private spaces. The Danish Government supports the development and use of B2B AREA - DANISH PAVILION design through measures like funding schools of design, and the Danish Design Centre, whose tasks include promoting the use of design by Danish companies. The young generation of Danish designers have an international perspective, currently exemplified by a wealth of innovative, experimental design, whose keywords are energy efficiency, environmental sustainability an usability - frequently with a twist and a well-developed sense of humor. In the Danish Pavilion on Ipanema we present a small selection of Danish design icons as well as contemporary Danish design. The Poet Sofa was designed by Finn Juhl for his own home 75 years ago and is still being sold all over the world. Today, it is being produced by One Collection in Ringkøbing, on the West Coast of Denmark. Good Craftsmanship The rich tradition of craftsmanship survives in many Danish cabinetmaker workshops and small furniture factories, producing classic furniture designed by the pioneers of Danish furniture design like f.i. Finn Juhl, Poul Kjærholm, Hans. J. Wegner, Børge Mogensen, and Nanna Ditzel. The idea of making a chair based on the most simple and elegant shape of them all, the circle, remained a distant dream until Hans J.
