Eftersom hårdrock är Sveriges andra största musikgenre när man talar om den svenska musikexporten idag1, måste det finnas något unikt med de producenter som arbetar med denna genre i Sverige, bortsett från att vi har bra artister, musiker och låtskrivare här. Är det samarbetet mellan artist och producent som gör att en skiva låter bra, eller kanske är det den nya digitala teknikens förtjänst att det går bra för svensk hårdrock? Detta är några av de frågor som kommer att behandlas i projektet. Projektet kommer även att innehålla intervjuer med olika hårdrocksproducenter i Sverige och deras syn på de frågeställningar projektet inkluderar, vilket vidare resulterar i en analys av intervjuerna och producenternas sound. Dessa analyser kommer att vara kopplade till en framställning av viktiga saker man bör ta i beaktande vid musikproduktion av hårdrock. Utifrån detta kommer jag vidare att försöka svara på de frågeställningar examensprojektet omfattar. Till exempel vad som är specifikt med svenska hårdrocksproducenter och deras sound idag. Jag kommer även att försöka framställa en hypotes om varför hårdrock kan vara Sveriges näst bäst säljande genre gällande svensk musikexport. 1 Anders Hjelmtorp, Music Brigade och Sweden Music Export, Föreläsning på LiU 28/9-2005 1 Musikproducentprogrammet Examensprojekt Susanne Renegård Linköpings Universitet MP2, TNXB08 2006-01-18 Abstract This examination paper includes the subject matter the twentieth century’s heavy metal producers of Sweden. Since hard rock and heavy metal is the second largest selling music genre when it comes to Swedish music export2, it brings up a problematic question about what the music producers’ roll in this matter may be. Is there something unique about our Swedish producers that contribute to this great success of the Swedish heavy metal genre, or is it the artists, groups or songwriters that are the primary fact in this scenario? Or may it be the cooperation between artist/group and these Swedish music producers that makes a good selling album of heavy metal? These are some of the questions this project will include and that I will try to bring answers to. This project also contains interviews with different Swedish heavy metal producers and their views on different relations of music production and similar questionings. How they work, what the think about new music formats like for example mp3’s, etc. This will result in an analysis of both the interviews and the producers’ different types of sounds. Out of this I will try to figure out what makes Swedish heavy metal producers what they are today and why Swedish hard rock and heavy metal music are doing and selling well overseas. 2 Anders Hjelmtorp, From Music Brigade and Sweden Music Export, Lecture, Linköpings University 28/9-2005 2 Musikproducentprogrammet Examensprojekt Susanne Renegård Linköpings Universitet MP2, TNXB08 2006-01-18 Förord Detta examensprojekt omfattar en yrkeshögskoleexamen inom Musikproducent- programmet på Institutionen för Teknik och Naturvetenskap (ITN) på Linköpings Universitet. Först av allt vill jag säga att detta projekt har betytt mycket för mig som ivrig student i hopp om att en dag få arbeta som musikproducent med fokusering på den musikgenre och livsstil jag tycker bäst om, hårdrock, i alla dess olika former och uttryck. Jag hoppas att detta arbete skall kunna vara ett underlag för en fortsatt diskussion om hur man kan arbeta som musikproducent i ett land som Sverige, samt hur man i framtiden kommer att se på hårdrock som den undergroundkultur den är idag. Min förhoppning är att jag kunnat väcka en nyfikenhet till att även inom andra musikgenrer undersöka hur man arbetar som musikproducent med alltifrån musiker och artister till med vilken teknik man använder sig utav. Samt väcka ett intresse för att våga knyta kontakter med folk ute i en tuff och hård musikbransch. Man måste våga satsa på det man tror på och vill arbeta med. Jag vill passa på att tacka min handledare och Sveriges så kallade rockorakel, Janne Stark, för den hjälp jag fått på vägen. Jag vill även tacka min examinator Tommie Nyström för stöd och support vid handledningsmöten, samt även Stefan Lindman. Dessutom vill jag tacka Ann-Marie Öhman för opponering på mitt arbete, det är alltid roligt att få höra en jazzmusikers åsikter på hårdrock och allt vad det innebär. Having worked on the ‘metal-less’ 2013 re-imagining of Dead End Kings entitled Dethroned„ & Uncrowned“ (2013) and extensive subsequent acoustic tours culminating in the Live DVD release of „Sanctitude“ last year, how much has this rather long absence from fully plugged heaviness influenced the songwriting for The Fall of Hearts? I think, by doing the many „Dethroned & Uncrowned“ and „Sanctitude“ acoustic gigs and album we opened up a new door for our audience to choose, to get familiar with, to accept a new sound of Katatonia. We never tried to claim or anything that this was the indication of our new style. It was just a little side experiment to show that we have more sides than just one in Katatonia. We also could show a softer more lushy acoustic side that would still sound like Katatonia.

Présente-nous la genèse du projet Dernière Volonté, du tout début jusqu’à la première sortie, à savoir “ Obéir et mourir ” en double cassette chez La Nouvelle Alliance il y a maintenant huit ans ? Pour être plus précis, Dernière Volonté existe depuis 12 ans, mes débuts officieux remontent donc à 1994.C’est donc durant cette année et avec peu de moyens que j’ai enregistré une cassette (‘Résistance’ que je n’ai jamais publié) assez bruitiste sur laquelle j’avais mixé des rythmes militaires, des ‘cut-up’ et des basses synthétiques. Pendant plusieurs mois, j’ai expérimenté différents procédés d’enregistrement (ralenti, inversion, distorsion et cut-up) et comme je n’avais pas le moindre sou pour m’acheter un sampler, je faisais mes propres ‘loop’ via des bandes magnétiques coupées et collées. C’était vraiment complexe mais il y avait une vraie ‘dynamique’ dans le son, et un résultat tout à fait surprenant. Evidement les bandes s’abîmaient et se détendaient et ça transformait vraiment la tonalité de ce qui était enregistré (c’est un procédé que j’ai gardé par la suite notamment pour Obéir et Mourir).

    Production Perspectives of Heavy Metal Record Producers Dr Niall Thomas University of Winchester – [email protected] Dr Andrew King University of Hull – [email protected] Abstract The study of the recorded artefact from a musicological perspective continues to unfold through contemporary research. Whilst an understanding of the scientific elements of recorded sound is well documented the exploration of the production and the artistic nature of this endeavour is still developing. This article explores phenomenological aspects of producing Heavy Metal music from the perspective of seven renowned producers working within the genre. Through a series of interviews and subsequent in-depth analysis particular sonic qualities are identified as key within the production of this work: impact; energy; precision; and extremity. A conceptual framework is then put forward for understanding the production methodology of recorded Heavy Metal Music, and, how developing technology has influenced the production of the genre. Keywords: recording; Heavy Metal; production; producers; phenomenology Introduction The affordances of digital technology have significantly changed the opportunities for practicing musicians to record music. Technology enables even amateur music makers the opportunity to record music with relative ease. The democratisation of technology has meant that mobile devices can become pocket sized recording studios (Leyshon, 2009), whilst affordable solutions and emulations of prohibitively expensive computing and recording technology are readily available via the Internet. The technology associated with certain aspects of music making is now more widespread and enables a new sense of creative musical freedom; music producers command a limitless array of technological choices. Despite the benefits of the ever-increasing rate of technological development, the recording industry is changing dramatically, and with it, the production perspectives of record producers.
