Life on Kelleys Island

25¢ JAN/FEB 2012 Twas the Season…

Carol Nelson-Burns Just about a week after the Village of Kelleys Island Firefighters and volunteers treated us all to the beautiful lighting of the Village Memorial Park, the annual Christmas Potluck at Town Hall attracted a host of faithful "old timers" and welcomed new-comers who were treated to a community feast of friendly banter and hearty food. Long tables were gaily deco- rated with festive arrangements. Steaming casseroles and platters piled with treats from sweet potatoes and roasts to cookies and pies, with salads and vegetable plates, breads and dips, relishes and sweets in between. There was plenty to feed the multitude who lined up patiently, chattering merrily through polite lines as they spooned and dipped their selec- tions onto teeming plates. Virginia Park, Pastor of Zion UMC, offered a prayer before the meal, then Vicki Finnegan, along with Ginny's vocal help, and Tama Schodowski at the piano guided us in favorite and familiar carols. Audience help was solicit- ed to perform a make-shift rendition of the Twelve Days of Christmas, bringing healthy laughter to all. Tall ship in North Bay Santa's "ho-ho-ho" arrival widened the bright eyes of island baby Victoria Skeans, Kim Bolden has one again been able to capture The Niagara as it worked its way through the island's daughter of Nataliya and Bobby Skeans, who North Bay this past August. Nutritious fruit baskets were handed out to eleven seniors, honoring their status as the elders of our island tribe. Many thanks to Donna Farmer, Geraldine Betzenheimer and Pat Seeholzer for their com- mitment to preserving this very special island tradition. Open House at Zion and other holiday festivities On Saturday, Dec. 17, Pastor Ginny held an Open House at Zion's parsonage, where she treated islanders to punch and a spread of treats, showing off the parsonage's recent reno- vations, and the décor she has created within the parsonage. Later that evening, the Village Carolers vis- ited homes throughout the island, entertaining at the parsonage and the VFW before arriving at the 'closing ceremonies' for the Village Pump for 2011. A growing choir of the voices of Bob Maier, Knut Lahrs, Jim Erne, Tom and Rob Behlen, Fred Ausflug, Brad Tallmadge, Arden Cooper, Don Alexander were awaited and wel- comed. Twas the Season… continued from page 1 lighting and music. At Zion, Pastor Ginny orchestrated a service of nine readings with accompanying carols. And 2011 ended with a gala evening at the VFW where 40-plus revelers shared each other's company in island- style warmth and cheer. And 2012 begins, with "a-wassailing" at the Dickensian-decorated home of Caroline and Ed Jorski. Did I hear word of an epiphany party being planned-once the hallmark event (and it WAS a "Hallmark moment" ) of gracious hosts Ann and Claudia Brown, a tradition that will always bring to mind and memory that kind, sweet Lady of the Island, Cecilia Ann Reidy Brown.

Many thanks to ALL who contributed to the warmth and affection of another Christmas Season on Kelleys!

Make plans to keep yourself safe Police Chief Ron Ehrbar

We all value our independence and the comfort of our home. For those of us that live alone, we might find it helpful to consider some options that keep us safe in the event that we encounter unforeseen problems. These problems can happen to anyone. As an example, anyone can have an accident, fall or medical problem such as a heart attack and be unable to walk or get up to use the phone to get help. Having an unintended fall or medical condition is not limited to older adults; it can happen to anyone of any age. By having a plan in place, it can give you the reassurance of getting help for such an unplanned situation. If you have a home phone or cell phone that you can carry, keep it with you on your person in a pocket, if possible. You can program your phone with emergency phone numbers. Another option includes using a "buddy system" where you can partner with a friend to call you by phone daily or you call them daily to make sure that every- thing is okay. You can also let that person know if you are leaving the island for a trip, however long it is. Also, know that you can always call the Police Department and we will help you make a plan so someone can check on you daily for whatever you need. A good time to discuss your options is at any of our KI group meet- ings or you can call me directly. Remember that when we work or have a schedule to show up some- where every day, we don't think about it but we automatically know some- one will check on us if we don't show up. But when this isn't the case, we should all have a plan in place. By planning ahead and taking con- trol of our lives, we can not only avoid potentially harmful results, we can also get peace of mind for ourselves, our family and community.

Community-Hancock Wood partnership erects platform Pat Hayes An Osprey nest platform was recently erected on Long Point. The project was born out of a partnership with Hancock Wood, The Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the KI Audubon. It is very exciting to have these groups working together. The pole and platform came about after writing Hancock Wood with a propos- al. They made arrangements with David Kriska, head of bio-diversity for the museum. The co-op agreed to donate a pole and install it on muse- um property on Long Point. The museum purchased material and built the nest platform. The co-op attached the nest plat- form and up she went. Mike Mielke took the pictures, the day it was done. These poles have been magnets for Osprey and have been successful in Ohio. This may be the very first one on Lake Erie. We are hoping, as they say, if we build it, they will come. Kelleys Island is very important to migratory birds and we must help out Osprey platform in any small ways we can. The Osprey should start making their way north as helped KI Audubon many years ago early as March and will continue by donating money for bluebird house going by KI thru mid June.
