Roost for Large Birds One Team, One Mission: Your Success! • Multiple Species Roost on Elmendorf Lake, 3.3 miles northeast of the runway • Several hundred Cattle Egrets, Double-crested Cormorants & Great Egrets, among other species • Population varies by season and appears to be growing Joint Base San Antonio: The Premier Joint Base in the Department of Defense! 10 Cattle Egret Observed Flightpath One Team, One Mission: Your Success! • Cattle Egret Roost Population Foraging to Southwest Agriculture, Landfill Fields, and Foraging • Flocks of 10-100+ cross north end of runway daily between sunrise and Roost sunset; 10-200’ AGL • Flying toward landfill area 5.5 miles SW of runway and returning. The flight frequency varies by season JBSA-Kelly Field Joint Base San Antonio: The Premier Joint Base in the Department of Defense! 11 A Joint Effort for Public Safety One Team, One Mission: Your Success! • Most birds are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, with provisions (USFWS Permit) for dealing with public safety hazards; a partnership of agencies: • US Fish and Wildlife Service • Texas Parks and Wildlife • Bexar County • USDA/Animal & Plant Health Inspection Services/Wildlife Services • City of San Antonio Parks & Rec Harassment and • Joint Base San Antonio Dispersal • As a public safety hazard, a long-term persistent and Cease Aircraft Operations integrated approach is used to disperse the birds, modify when Observed behavior, and encourage alternate habitats Habitat Modifications to Make Less Attractive Joint Base San Antonio: The Premier Joint Base in the Department of Defense! 12 Reduce the Wildlife Hazard – Plan of Action One Team, One Mission: Your Success! Habitat modification is the first mitigation strategy, producing more long-term cost/benefit gains • Reducing the canopy cover will create an undesirable area to roost • Continue to monitor area post modification for Egret return Dispersal and Harassment is more labor intensive and, depending on the birds’ habituation to human presence, can be difficult to sustain.
