GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT MONITORING SYSTEM ASSESSMENT OF URBAN AIR QUALITY SITED NATIONS WORLD HEALTH 'VIRONMENT PROGRAMMF Eel., io, ORGANIZATION Copyright © UNEP and WHO 1988 Prepared in cooperation with the Monitoring and Assessment Research Centre, London 77 GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT MONITORING SYSTEM SSESSMENT OF URBAN AIR QUALITY U'ilTED NATIONS WORLD HEALTH ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME ORGANIZATION Preface Ever since the mid-1970, the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has, through the Global Environment Monitoring System (GEMS), been operating worldwide networks for monitoring air and water quality and with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for food contamination, and collecting information on environmental conditions and human exposures in different parts of the world. In 1988 this information, supplemented with other data, was compiled and analysed and for each topic an assessment was made on the global and regional levels and trends. These assessments were considered and endorsed by a government-designated Expert Meeting which was held in Geneva from 12-16 September 1988. 7imendments proposed at the Expert Meeting were incorporated into the assessment reports. The UNEP/WHO Meeting was attended by delegates from 12 countries (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, Ghana, Hungary, India, Japan, The Netherlands, Sudan, U.S.A.), two international organizations (the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAQ) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)) and the Monitoring and Assessment Research Centre (MARC). The government-designated Expert Meeting was chaired by Dr. Abmed Amin El-Carnal, Advisor, Egyptian EnvIronment Agency, with Dr. Vic Armstrong, Head, criteria Section, Environment Health Directorate, Health and Welfare, Canada, serving as Rapporteur. -

The Growth of Capital: Piketty, Harrod-Domar, Solow and the Long Run Development of the Rate of Investment Merijn Knibbe [Wageningen University, Netherlands]
real-world economics review, issue no. 69 subscribe for free The growth of capital: Piketty, Harrod-Domar, Solow and the long run development of the rate of investment Merijn Knibbe [Wageningen University, Netherlands] Copyright: Merijn Knibbe, 2014 You may post comments on this paper at http://rwer.wordpress.com/comments-on-rwer-issue-no-69/ After considerable hesitation by many of our traditionally inclined and appropriately cautious colleagues, the desirability and feasibility of an integrated comprehensive system of national accounts, which includes a balance sheet as a necessary component, seems now to be generally accepted (R.W. Goldsmith, 1966). Introduction Piketty and Zucman use a concept of capital based upon the System of National Accounts (SNA) definitions which, like the concept used by Harrod-Domar and Solow, includes fixed depreciable capital, but which also encompasses ‘land’, ‘natural resources’ and financial capital. This makes it fit to estimate the flow of capital income including rents. Which is what Piketty and Zucman do: it’s an income flow consistent concept. Unlike the Harrod-Domar model the ideas of Piketty and Zucman are not expenditure flow consistent as they do not contain an explicit link to measured investment expenditure and, therewith, the level of aggregate demand. A first step towards making the Piketty-Zucman concept of capital expenditure flow consistent is made comparing the long term historical flow of investment with the development of the stock of capital which shows that the ‘U’ shaped development of total capital, measured as a percentage of GDP, identified by Piketty and Zucman is inversely related to the rate of investment while the stock of depreciable capital – part of total capital - seems to show a slight positive relation with the rate of investment. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract Although high levels of population mobility are often viewed as a problem at the neighbourhood level we know relatively little about what makes some neighbourhoods more mobile than others. The main question in this paper is to what extent differences in out-mobility between neighbourhoods can be explained by differences in the share of mobile residents, or whether other neighbourhood characteristics also play a role. To answer this question we focus on the effects of the socio-economic status and ethnic composition of neighbourhoods and on neighbourhood change. Using data from the Netherlands population registration system and the Housing Demand Survey we model population mobility at both individual and neighbourhood levels. -
The Emancipation of the Equine Veterinary Practitioner in the Netherlands
The emancipation of the equine veterinary practitioner in the Netherlands Pferdeheilkunde 25 (2009) 1 (Januar/Februar) 28-37 The emancipation of the equine veterinary practitioner in the Netherlands Joop B. A. Loomans, Peter. A. Koolmees1, Ab Barneveld and René P. van Weeren Department of Equine Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences1, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University, the Netherlands Summary Equitation is becoming more and more popular in western countries. Leisure horses populate former agricultural lands and the number of professional training stables, stud farms and riding schools has increased dramatically in recent years. In the Netherlands the annual tur- nover in the equine industry is estimated at 2 billion Euros and is still growing. The horse has conquered an important position in the hearts and minds of many young girls and (to a lesser extend) boys. The fascination for the horse is certainly not limited to people with an equi- ne or agricultural background, or to specific social classes. This paper puts this development in a historical perspective and describes the heyday of the former famous equine “horse masters”, who were mainly associated with the cavalry, the decline of specific equine know- ledge during the era of rapid mechanisation, and the revival of the horse vet as the modern equine veterinarian and equine specialist tre- ating leisure and sport horses. -

(2006): NOBANIS – Invasive Alien Species Fact Sheet – Crassostrea gigas. – From: Online Database of the North European and Baltic Network on Invasive Alien Species - NOBANIS www.nobanis.org, Date of access x/x/200x. Species description Scientific names: Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg 1793), Ostreidae, Bivalvia Synonyms: Gryphaea angulata Lamarck 1819; Ostrea gigas Thunberg 1793; Ostrea laperousii Schrenk 1861; Ostrea talienwhanensis Crosse 1862. Note: The Portuguese oyster Crassostrea angulata is a name often used for this species. According to genetic studies it was shown that Crassostrea angulata is likely a strain of Crassostrea gigas originating from Taiwan (Huvet et al. 2002). However, the identity of C. gigas and C. angulata remains unsettled. Molecular data indicate higher similarity than usual for distinct species, but still show distinct differences (Huvet et al. 2002, Boudry et al. 2003, Lam 2003, Cross et al. 2005). Common names: giant oyster, Japanese oyster, Pacific oyster, Portuguese oyster (GB), Stillehavsøsters, japansk østers (DK), Felsenauster, Pazifische Auster, Portugiesische Auster (DE), Suur hiidauster (EE), risaostra (IS), Austre (LT), lielâ austere (LV), ostryga pacyficzna (PL), Japanskt jätteostron (SE) Fig. 1 and 2.
