Captain Speiser will give a presentation on the career of a , the role of the Maritime Pilot aboard in throughout the world, a history of Pilotage, and a history of the Sandy Hook Pilots, who have been bringing ships into and out of our Port for 325 years.

Captain Speiser will also discuss the training and licensing of the Sandy Hook Pilots, the process of maneuvering today's ships into and out of the Port, how yesterday's ocean liners have evolved into today's cruise ships, and his experiences handling unique ships such as QUEEN ELIZABETH 2, QUEEN MARY 2, ANTHEM OF THE SEAS, REGAL EMPRESS, and many more.

Captain William A Speiser, Jr. grew up on the New Jersey Shore watching ships enter and depart our Port from its beaches and the Cruise Terminal in Manhattan. From a young age, he sought a career in the maritime industry as an officer on ships, which led him to the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. Upon graduation in 1994, he began a seven- year apprenticeship with the Sandy Hook Pilots and became a Pilot in September 2001. He is the first Kings Point Graduate to become a and is the Vice President of the New Jersey Sandy Hook Pilots.

ASCENT OF THE SCENIC ECLIPSE

During the early morning hours of September 10th, under a gray overcast sky, a gray lady slowly sailed to her mooring at Pier 88 in New York City. This marked the maiden arrival of SCENIC ECLIPSE, a ship advertised as the World’s First Discovery Yacht, following her delivery from Uljanik Shipyard on July 26th and subsequent inaugural cruise from Reykjavik, Iceland. SCENIC ECLIPSE is the first oceangoing ship for Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours, which has grown from its inception in Australia 33 years ago to a company that now has over 23 ships. Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours has 15 riverboats, designated “Space-Ships,” operating river cruises in Europe, Southeast Asia, Russia and Egypt, in addition to its sister brand, Emerald Waterways, with seven river boats designated as “Star-Ships” operating in Europe. Referred to onboard as a “ship of firsts” and a “ship for all seasons,” SCENIC ECLIPSE is truly unique in its technical offerings including the world’s first zero speed stabilizers and full offshore dynamic positioning system on a cruise ship (allowing for stationary positioning of the ship without an anchor), two permanent Airbus H130 helicopters with hangar and maintenance facilities, and a permanent 7-passenger U-Boat Worx Cruise Submarine capable of diving to nearly 1,000 feet. At 17,085 GRT and 551 feet in length, SCENIC ECLIPSE was designed to carry 228 passengers (200 passengers in Polar Regions) on worldwide itineraries in all-inclusive luxury. Designed with the highest passenger ship ice class rating – Polar 6 – SCENIC ECLIPSE is scheduled through 2022 to spend significant amounts of her time cruising in both the Artic and Antarctic regions. SCENIC ECLIPSE provides all guests with butler service while providing an almost 1:1 guest-to-staff ratio. Guest accommodation is provided in 114 all-verandah suites while 10 dining options include both indoor and outdoor venues. In keeping with SCENIC ECLIPSE’s “new standard for luxury exploration ships,” New York City was chosen as the location for the christening ceremonies with Dame Helen Mirren acting as Godmother of the ship “due to her style, beauty and spirit of adventure, [which] are true to those embodied in the design and ethos of SCENIC ECLIPSE,” according to Founder and Chairman, Glen Moroney.

2 Dame Helen’s enthusiasm made it obvious that she was honored at being named Godmother of SCENIC ECLIPSE. Further evidence came during her remarks detailing her association with the ship as well as recounting in detail many of the amenities that are offered. She praised the ship for its design and for the number of innovative “firsts” planned to reduce any environmental effects while cruising in especially sensitive regions. The ceremony moved outside onto the pier where Dame Helen proceeded to signal the traditional christening of the ship with a bottle of champagne released from the forward Observation Terrace on Deck 5, while onlookers including many of the assembled crew and staff cheered in celebration.

3 WORLD SHIP SOCIETY CRUISE TO BERMUDA ON OCEANIA CRUISES’ INSIGNIA, AUGUST 18 – 25, 2019 By David G. Hume On August 18, 2019, a bright Sunday morning, 37 members and friends of the Port of New York Branch of the World Ship Society boarded Oceania Cruises’ INSIGNIA at Pier 90 on Manhattan’s west side for a seven-night cruise to Bermuda. The INSIGNIA entered service in 1998 as the R1, the first of eight nearly identical ships built for Renaissance Cruise Lines. After the events of September 11, 2001, Renaissance filed for bankruptcy and its ships were purchased by other cruise lines. Oceania Cruises eventually acquired four of the so-called “R Ships” and renamed them INSIGNIA, REGATTA, NAUTICA and SIRENA. Oceania Cruises also has two somewhat larger new-builds in its fleet, MARINA and RIVIERA. The R Ships were built by Renaissance shortly after the success of the movie “” in 1997. The interior of each ship was decorated to resemble the Edwardian décor of ships like the TITANIC, OLYMPIC, LUSITANIA and MAURETANIA. Mahogany paneling was used throughout, to especially nice effect in the Grand Dining Room and the Library, which has a simulated stained glass, domed ceiling and an attractive but non-functioning fireplace. Much of this décor remains, but each ship has been renovated throughout and furnished with new artwork. The INSIGNIA is 594 feet long, 83.5 feet wide and has a gross tonnage of 30,277. It has a cruising speed of 18 knots. The ship can accommodate 684 passengers and it has a crew of 400. It is registered in the Marshall Islands. When we arrived at Pier 90, we were glad to see other members of the World Ship Society. The embarkation process began shortly after 11:00 AM. Passengers in suites and veranda staterooms were given priority for boarding over passengers in other staterooms. Nevertheless, most of us were able to board the INSIGNIA before noon. Once on board, we found that we could not yet access our staterooms, so we went to the Terrace Café on Deck 9. Since some cabins were not available until 3:00 PM, we had a very leisurely lunch. From the Terrace Café, we could see the NORWEGIAN ESCAPE docked at Pier 88. With a length of 1,069 feet and gross tonnage of 165,300, the NORWEGIAN ESCAPE completely dwarfed the INSIGNIA. The NORWEGIAN ESCAPE was also leaving for Bermuda that day. On our cruise, the Captain was Damir Kurilic from Croatia, the General Manager was Victor Conceicao from Portugal and the Cruise Director was Carson Turner from New York. The Guest Lecturer was Sandy Cares, an expert on Bermuda. As the INSIGNIA left the pier at 5:00 PM, we were enveloped in a sudden heavy rain shower, which sent people running inside from the outer decks. A group of us were enjoying the sail away in Horizons, a lounge at the forward end of Deck 10 above the . As we made our way downriver, toward the Statue of Liberty, we could see through the fog a large white object behind Governor’s Island slowly start to move. We soon realized that this was Cunard Line’s QUEEN MARY 2, which had left its pier in Red Hook, Brooklyn at 5:30 PM. It was broadside to the Hudson River prior to making its turn toward the Verrazano Bridge. The QM2 was sailing transatlantic to England. After our departure, we had a day and a half at sea to inspect the INSIGNIA. Because of the relatively small dimensions of the ship, it is easy to get around and, with only 684 passengers, it never felt crowded. The starboard side of Deck 3 and both sides of Decks 4, 6, 7 and 8 are devoted almost exclusively to staterooms. The staterooms on Deck 3 have portholes with operative deadlights, which can be lowered to cover the porthole in rough seas. There was no need to do this on our cruise. The staterooms on Deck 4 and the middle of Deck 6 have windows. The staterooms on Decks 6, 7 and 8 have balconies. There are suites located at the fore and aft ends of Decks 6 and 7 and along the entire length of Deck 8. At the middle of the ship is a two-deck staircase connecting Decks 4 and 5. The Reception Hall is on Deck 4. At the base of the staircase is the Reception Desk. On the port side is Destination Services where tours are booked. On the starboard side is the Concierge Desk for the use of the passengers in the suites. The main public rooms are located on Deck 5. The Insignia Lounge is at the forward end. This one-deck venue is used for the production shows and entertainers. The party for repeat passengers was also held in this lounge. The entertainment included a comedian, who performed on two nights, and three production shows, two presented by the Insignia Production Show Singers and one by the Cruise Director, in each case accompanied by the Insignia Show Band. There was only one show each night at 9:30 PM. The lounge has a dance floor/stage at the forward end and a bar across the back. Heading aft on Deck 5 you can find the Casino and the adjacent bar, Martinis. Further aft are two shops, one on the port side selling clothes, souvenirs and sundries and one on the starboard side specializing in jewelry and watches. Beyond the shops is the Upper Hall, at the top of the midship staircase. Here, in a small alcove overlooking the staircase, a string quartet often entertains passengers. Aft of the Upper Hall is Baristas Grand Bar on the starboard side. Here you can get small sandwiches, pastries and cookies throughout the day. This bar serves as a waiting room for the Grand Dining Room, which fills the aft end of the ship. A large, circular, teardrop-shaped crystal chandelier is the centerpiece of this one-deck space. Meals in the Grand Dining Room are open seating, with no assigned tables. When you are ready to eat, you simply request a table from the maître d’. If there is any delay, you can wait in the Baristas Grand Bar. We never waited for more than five minutes. A nice feature of this dining room is that there are tables for two lining the port and starboard sides. We discovered that it was best to wait until your entire party was gathered before entering a restaurant. On the few occasions when people entered before their tablemates, they could not order food or beverages until the others arrived. The dining room stewards did not take orders until everyone was seated at the table. Oceania Cruises is known for its fine cuisine. The menus offer many rich, inventive dishes. However, standard items like steak, chicken, shrimp and Caesar’s salad are always available. Two alternative restaurants are on Deck 10 aft, the Polo Grill and Toscana. The Polo Grill, on the starboard side, specializes in steaks and chops, while Toscana, on the port side, features Italian cuisine. We tried each restaurant and found the food and

4 service to be excellent. There is no charge for these alternative restaurants, but reservations are necessary. You can choose to dine in one or the other every night, subject to availability. Each passenger is guaranteed a reservation at each restaurant. Those who book early get their preferred time. Those who book late have to take whatever time is available. However, the food in the Grand Dining Room is so good that many did not take advantage of the alternative restaurants, allowing others to go more than once. The Terrace Café is at the aft end of Deck 9. This venue is like the typical Lido buffet on most cruise ships today. It offers a variety of food, which can be eaten inside at the tables lining the port and starboard side or outdoors either in a small terrace at the stern of the ship or at tables aft of the pool in the middle of Deck 9. We found the food very good. There is an espresso- cappuccino machine on the starboard side. Nearby is an ice cream station, where you can request your favorite flavor either in a cup or a cone with a selection of toppings. There is another ice cream station by the pool. Wine and beer are not included with meals, but soda is available without charge. The soda in the mini-bars in the staterooms is also complimentary. There are two hot tubs adjacent to the pool on Deck 9. These were rarely used, since the weather was so warm. The Waves Bar is forward of the pool. There is no magrodome covering the pool. Instead, a Fitness Track on Deck 10 encircles the pool area below. At the forward end of Deck 9, the Fitness Center is on the starboard side and the Canyon Ranch Spa Club is on the port side. A small terrace area overlooking the bow has a hot tub and loungers available only to those using the spa. The Library, one of the most attractive rooms on the ship, is located on Deck 10, forward from the Polo Grill and Toscana. The Library overlooks the Fitness Track, the pool and the forward mast. As previously mentioned, the Horizons Lounge is located at the forward end of Deck 10. Although this lounge serves as a bar most of the time, afternoon tea with finger sandwiches, scones and pastries is served at 4:00 PM. At the forward end of Deck 11, accessible by stairs from Deck 10, is a Sun Deck and viewing area, with shuffleboard courts and a very small putting green. On the first full day of the cruise, the sea was mildly choppy and the ship shuddered and swayed a little. To members of the World Ship Society, who are used to sailing transatlantic through much rougher seas, this sea state was enjoyable. We were surprised to hear many people complain about the slight movement. The World Ship Society was entertained royally on this cruise. We were invited to two cocktail parties in Horizons by Oceania Cruises. Our members were also invited to two cocktail parties in the Insignia Lounge, the Captain’s Welcome Party, which was open to all passengers, and the past passenger cocktail party, even though some of us were sailing with Oceania Cruises for the first time. In addition, we were invited to a cocktail party in Horizons hosted by Virtuoso, the leading network of agencies specializing in luxury travel, since all bookings for the World Ship Society had been made through Brad Hatry at Travel Edge, which is affiliated with Virtuoso. Finally, the World Ship Society held a cocktail party at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club on the harbor just steps from Front Street in Hamilton. For making this venue available, we are indebted to maritime artist Stephen Card, a Bermuda resident, and his friends, Allan and Judi Davidson, members of the club. Allan Davidson had previously been a deck officer aboard the QUEEN OF BERMUDA. He showed us memorabilia from the ship, including the ship’s wheel, displayed in the club. We spent a total of three days in Bermuda, split evenly between St. George’s and Hamilton. Our first stop was St. George’s. The INSIGNIA is small enough to sail through the cut in the reef to the harbor. We went through the cut at about noon on Tuesday. We were welcomed by the traditional cannon blast and the town crier, ringing his bell. We spent the rest of the day and the following day at the dock at St. George’s. Some used this time to walk through town, looking at the shops and visiting the ruins of the unfinished church, and others explored the island on tours provided by Destination Services to such places as Crystal Cave, Gibbs Hill Lighthouse and Elbow Beach. We hiked out to Point Park to see the Martello Tower with an ancient cannon brought from Fort St. Catherine. This tower once guarded the approach to King’s Wharf and the Royal Naval Dockyard. Early in the morning on Thursday, the INSIGNIA left the dock at St. George’s, sailed back through the cut and headed toward Hamilton. As we passed the Royal Naval Dockyard, we saw the CELEBRITY SUMMIT and NORWEGIAN ESCAPE. We then went through Two Rock Passage and docked along Front Street in Hamilton. We had the rest of Thursday and Friday morning to take yet more tours or to simply walk the streets of Hamilton and visit the stores. Trimingham’s and Debenham’s may be long gone, but Marks & Spencer, Brown & Co., A.S. Cooper & Sons and the English Sports Shop partially fill the void. There is even an outlet of Vineyard Vines, founded in 1998 on Martha’s Vineyard. Our walk through town included a visit to the historic Hamilton Princess Hotel. We set sail from Hamilton at about 2:00 PM on Friday afternoon. The sail away took us back past the cut to St. George’s before we could turn north and sail home to New York. On our cruise, we sailed a total of 1,334 nautical miles. For the members and friends of the World Ship Society, this cruise was an excellent opportunity to socialize aboard an elegant cruise ship and to enjoy gloriously warm weather. We look forward to our next cruise together.

6 SHIPS IN PORT: LIGHTS OUT & THE OCEAN MONARCH

On a November evening in 1965, Des Kirkpatrick was in New York City's Times Square when the lights in the big neon signs began to flicker and then went out. He was headed over to Pier 95, at the foot of West 55th Street, to join his ship, Furness- Bermuda Line's OCEAN MONARCH. He was the 13,000-ton ship's chief .

"When I reached Pier 95, the OCEAN MONARCH was brilliantly lit – but Manhattan was totally dark and silhouetted," he recalled. "Once I was aboard, the captain called and asked how many berths were ready and available. From its nearby headquarters on West 57th Street, the staff of CBS News wanted to come aboard. Quickly, we checked every cabin. We had just arrived from the UK and our annual overhaul and dry-docking. We were ready. The full CBS News staff was assigned to different cabins. We even provided a light supper and, the following morning, a light buffet breakfast. The lead newsman Walter Cronkite came aboard and later interviewed the captain. It all gave Furness-Bermuda lots of high publicity. And afterward, as a thank you, CBS gave us two color television sets. One went to the officers' mess and the other to the crew mess. It was a busy night for the OCEAN MONARCH. But no one came from the Furness-Bermuda Line down on Whitehall Street in Lower Manhattan. It was too far away – especially in a blackout!"

Commissioned in the spring of 1951, the 516-ft long OCEAN MONARCH was a longtime favorite in New York cruise circles. Often teamed with the larger QUEEN OF BERMUDA on 6-night cruises to Bermuda, the 440-passenger OCEAN MONARCH occasionally made 8-day voyages that included a call at Nassau, as well cruises to the Caribbean and summer trips up to Quebec City, Gaspe, Saguenay, Halifax and then Bermuda.

With increasing competition by the 1960s, the OCEAN MONARCH was retired in September 1966, returned to British waters (to lay-up in River Fal in Cornwall), and offered for sale. Soon, she had rather unusual owners: Bulgaria’s Balkanturist Company. Renamed VARNA, she continued cruising, but now in the Mediterranean and Black seas – and on periodic charters. In the early Seventies, she actually returned to North for a series of summertime trips (for Gala Company) out of Montreal along the St. Lawrence and to the Canadian Maritime provinces. She also made several longer voyages that called at Bermuda.

By 1973, the VARNA was used mostly by British tourists, cruising from Nice within the western Mediterranean on fly-sail packages. Shortly thereafter, she was adversely affected by the sudden increases in fuel oil charges and consequently spent the following years in lay-up. In February 1979, after she had been been sold to Greek buyers, I recalled seeing her in Perama Bay, near Piraeus, painted overall in anti-corrosive orange-red and undergoing a structural refit. She was then lying amidst a large assortment of passenger and cargo ships, a group that also included such liners as the AUSTRALIS (ex-AMERICA), ELLINIS (ex-LURLINE), OLYMPIA and the RASA SAYANG (ex-BERGENSFJORD). There were various rumors about the VARNA. One speculated that she was to be renamed RIVIERA, with the intention of running her on Mediterranean cruises from Venice, but this never materialized. Another was to have her chartered to a newly formed firm known as World Cruise Lines and for summer season New York-Bermuda cruises. Yet another report suggested that she would become the VENUS for both New York and Florida cruising. In fact, in 1981, while still at her lay-up moorings at Perama, she was rechristened REINA DEL MAR and it was intended that she should sail to Scandinavia and the North Cape in summer and around the Mediterranean for the remainder of the year.

But on May 28th 1981, while undergoing repairs and further refitting, she was swept by fire. Burning from end to end and badly damaged, she later capsized and became a total loss. Her remains poked above the local waters, not far from the sunken remains of the RASA SAYANG (the former BERGENSFJORD), which burned out just months previously, when she too was in Greek hands. The VARNA’s wreck was later salvaged and scrapped.

CRUISE SHIP RELIEF FOR BAHAMAS: Bahamas Paradise Cruise Lines’ GRAND CELEBRATION has sailed on two humanitarian voyages to Freeport, Grand Bahamas in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian, which decimated northern portions of the island nation. Oneil Khosa, CEO of Bahamas Paradise, said “Grand Bahama is home to us and we knew it was the right thing to do; they needed help. After making the announcement earlier in the week that we were going, we had 300 tons of supplies donated within hours. Doctors were leaving work to join the ship.” On her first such voyage, GRAND CELEBRATION carried over 100 tons of supplies, including food, water, medical items and power generators to the island, and returned to the Port of Palm Beach with 1,100 Bahamian and American evacuees. On the second voyage, 800 tons of supplies were transported, and 10,000 meals for hurricane victims were prepared on the ship. Khosa added, “As we all know, tourism is the most important industry in the Bahamas and we understand the lifeline it brings to residents across the islands. Grand Bahama is our home away from home. We are committed to providing aid to our brothers and sisters there and we look forward to returning to our traditional sailing schedule as soon as possible, as we know that will make the most positive impact on the island." Khosa and Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line are working with the Bahamian Government to determine how best to continue humanitarian voyages to the islands.

TURKISH SAPPHIRE: Saga Cruises has sold the SAGA SAPPHIRE, originally completed as EUROPA in 1981 for Hapag- Lloyd Line’s worldwide luxury cruise service. She will be replaced by Saga’s first purpose-built cruise ship, the recently introduced SPIRIT OF DISCOVERY, and sister ship SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE will join the fleet next year. SAGA SAPPHIRE will launch a cruise division for Turkish travel giant ANEX Tour, and will sail on her inaugural voyage from Antalya, Turkey in mid-2020. According to ANEX Chairman Neset Kockar, “With changing habits of travellers, we must adopt our product offering accordingly. By acquiring SAGA SAPPHIRE, we will be able to create a unique Eastern Mediterranean cruise experience for our valued guests.” The 37,049-ton EUROPA served Hapag-Lloyd from 1981-1999, and developed an enviable reputation. She was sold to Star Cruises for Far East cruising, renamed SUPERSTAR EUROPE in 1999 and SUPERSTAR ARIES in 2000. She was due to be transferred to Star’s Orient Line division in 2003 as OCEAN VOYAGER, but this did not come to fruition. Instead, she was sold to Pullmantur that year, becoming HOLIDAY DREAM in 2004 for Barcelona-based cruising. She was then transferred to Croisieres de France in 2008, sailing from Marseilles until 2011, when she was delivered to new owners Saga Cruises. Saga completely rebuilt the 30-year old vessel for deluxe cruise service from Great Britain, her first cruise departing in spring 2012. Hopefully, this unique vessel will have a successful sixth career.

IT’S A STRETCH: MSC Cruises will be stretching the 95,128-ton MAGNIFICA, making her the largest cruise ship to undergo this enlargement process. She was completed in 2010, the last of MSC’s four MUSICA-Class vessels. Her passenger capacity will increase from 2,518 to 2,948, based on double occupancy. A 75-foot section will be inserted in the ship, increasing her length to 1,039 feet. Her tonnage increase has not been announced. In addition to 215 cabins, the new section will contain two restaurants, a shopping area and a water park. MAGNIFICA will also gain sophisticated environmental technology, including a Selective Catalytic Reduction system, an Advanced Wastewater system, and a shore power system. MSC stretched its four LIRICA-Class ships in 2014-2015, but has not stated whether any additional MUSICA-Class ships are to be stretched. When the stretch and renovation are completed in May 2021, MAGNIFICA will be based in Southampton, UK for a series of 24 cruises through October 2021.
