Howe Institute. • A member of the Institute Board since 2001, he is Executive Chairman of Morneau Sobeco, and works extensively with organizations in the design and delivery of their employee benefits and compensation programs. • He is Chair of the Board of Directors at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, and sits on the Boards of AGF Management Ltd., AGF Trust Company, the Art Gallery of Ontario Foundation, the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation, the London School of Economics North American Advisory Committee, and the Canadian INSEAD Foundation. He is past Chair of Covenant House. • In 2002, he was named as one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40. He holds a B.A. from the University of Western Ontario, M.Sc. (Econ.) from the London School of Economics and an M.B.A. from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France. Bill Morneau • Bill succeeds former Bank of Canada Governor David A. Dodge, who has completed two years as the Institute’s Chair. David is remaining on the Institute’s Board, and we are grateful for his continuing leadership. Q4 highlights: Calgary dinner/panel discussion with top bank economists • More than 100 of the Institute’s friends and supporters joined the Institute in Calgary on October 19th for a dinner/panel discussion on “The Next Expansion? Opportunities and Challenges for Entrepreneurs and Investors.” • The panel featured: • Warren Jestin, Senior Vice President & Chief Economist, Scotiabank • Douglas Porter, Deputy Chief Economist and Managing Director, BMO Capital Markets • Avery Shenfeld, Managing Director & Chief Economist, CIBC World Markets, and • Craig Wright, Senior Vice President & Chief Economist, RBC • We are deeply grateful for the Principal Sponsorship Support of General Electric; the Supporting Sponsorship Support of Deloitte and the generosity of the corporations, organizations and individuals that purchased tickets to the event. 4 Q4 highlights: Benefactors Dinner/Lecture with Prof. Michael Bliss • 130 of the Institute’s members and supporters attended the 2010 Benefactor’s Lecture and Dinner, held in Toronto on November 17, 2010. • The annual Benefactor’s Lecture is a highlight of the Institute’s calendar – our chance to say “thank you” to members and friends and acknowledge their impact on our policy work. • The event featured a lecture by Prof. Michael Bliss, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto. • Dr. Bliss reviewed the history of Canada’s healthcare system and drew lessons for future reforms. • Copies of the policy study Prof. Bliss wrote for the event, “Critical Condition: A Historian’s Prognosis on Canada’s Aging Healthcare System” were distributed at the event, mailed to Institute members, and are available on the Institute’s website. The study was also excerpted in both the National Post and the Globe and Mail. • We are deeply grateful for Pfizer’s sponsorship of The 2010 Benefactor’s Lecture. Prof. Michael Bliss 5 Q4 highlights: $400,000 Gift from Pfizer supporting health policy research • Another highlight of the 2010 Benefactors Lecture was Pfizer Canada’s announcement of a $400,000 gift to fund research and conferences on health policy. • Pfizer’s gift is the fourth-largest in the Institute’s 50+ year history. • It was offered on a completely philanthropic basis, with full respect for the Institute’s commitment to academic independence and research objectivity.
