Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 15, 2018 4 Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,

We are in Ordinary Time, and we follow the ordinary celebration of the . When we have nothing unusual, it is easy to fall into a routine and overlook the value of meaningful details. One of those elements is the Rite of Peace. It follows the Our Father prayer and it includes: the prayer for peace, the wish of peace, and the sign of peace.

In the Roman there are some alternatives in the Rite of Peace. For ex- ample, the spiritual movement of Neo-catechumenal Way performs the sign of peace before offering eucharistic gifts. Such alternative is inspired by the words of the : “before you bring the gift to the altar, first reconcile yourself with your brother.” In the regular Eucharistic celebration the sign of peace comes right before , and it entreats peace and unity for the Church and the whole human family.

The introduction to the says – “As for the actual sign of peace to be giv- en, the manner is to be established by the Conferences of in accordance with the culture and customs of the peoples. However, it is appropriate that each person, in a sober manner, offer the sign of peace only to those who are nearest”.

What is our custom in sharing peace with each other? This sign is more than a jovial handshake. It’s older, formal ges- ture was a hands-to-shoulders embrace and a kiss on both cheeks, but this might be too much to restore. Rather, we treat this sign as a ritual gesture made in simplicity and de- corum. With the gesture the words come as well “The peace of Christ”. This is never the time for hellos or chitchat. This is an act of liturgy.

May the Peace of Christ fill your hearts!

Our Lady, Mother of the Church Mission Statement We, the members of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, are drawn together through baptism as a part of the . We are a caring Catholic community, working together as instruments through which , our risen Lord and Head, continues His mission. Linked to Christ as His Body, we believe that the risen Jesus still proclaims God’s word, gives thanks and praise, welcomes, nurtures, comforts and reaches out to all people. Using the hands and hearts of the members of the parish, with a growing sense that each of us is gifted and has an important part to play in our Parish, Church and World, we renew our call:

♦ to be a Parish diligent about Word and Eucharist, the primary source of our nourishment and spiritual growth... ♦ to be “missioned” - sent forth in the person of Jesus, to bring His Word and Eucharist to family, friends, neighbors and workplace... ♦ to reach out to the sick, the homebound, the persecuted, the lonely, the poor and the bereaved… ♦ to find time to share laughter, joy, friendship, at times, tears; and always to share the goodness of each other...
