Clarinet Mouthpiece Setup Patricia Dilutis Clarinet Clarinet Mouthpiece Setup Patricia DiLutis Clarinet Mouthpiece Setup -The Clarinet setup includes the mouthpiece, reed, ligature, and barrel -Use a little cork grease to place the mouthpiece on the barrel smoothly -Put your reed in your mouth: DO NOT suck or chew on it -Put your ligature on first, then slide your reed to avoid chipping your reed -Tighten the ligature to properly hold the reed in place: the reed should be slightly above the top of the mouthpiece -In case you forgot your ligature or it is broken, you can temporarily use a rubber band to hold the reed onto the mouthpiece Embouchure -This is what the facial muscle form to make a good tone -DO NOT swallow your lips inside of your mouth or make a round chin, but always push forward -Put your pointer finger on your bottom lip and push against it: your muscles engage! -Replace your finger with your set up -Rest your top teeth on the mouthpiece, but also squeeze them with your top lip -Blow! Troubleshooting: -Keep the bottom of the barrel open -Push up against your bottom lip, as you did with your finger Tonguing -Begin the sound with the tongue -Feel your tongue at the tip of the reed -Put your tongue on the reed first, then blow and feel the pressure inside your face -You need the air behind the tongue to produce the sound right away -Move the tongue back slightly to create the sound.

The students will produce a concert F# if embouchure, air support, and tongue position are all correct. SURVIVAL Straws To help students understand the components of a good embouchure, have them drink water through a straw while looking in a mirror. While drinking GUIDE water, most students will have a flattened chin, the correct amount of lower lip rolled over the bottom teeth, and firm corners. Encourage students to practice their embouchure with a mirror daily. Swab in Bell To help students develop a good air column, insert a bundled up swab into the bell of the clarinet and have them play a low chalumeau E1. Tell the student to try to push the swab out of the clarinet with the air. Suddenly pull the swab out of the bell and the student should be producing a big, full sound. Paper Trick Students often don’t take enough mouthpiece. Place a piece of paper between the mouthpiece and the reed and mark the contact point on the reed lightly with a pencil. This will illustrate how much mouthpiece to take. Cutting a mouthpiece patch in half and placing it further down on the mouthpiece can also be a great tactile reminder for students of where to put their teeth and of how much mouthpiece to take. Hand Position If a student rests their left thumb on the body of the instrument while playing throat tones, rather than hovering it over the tone hole, place a mounting square on the instrument under the thumb hole.

The noise may sound harsh. It is not too different from original woodwind instruments. The first woodwind instruments were hollow pieces of wood: one end was open and the other end was closed. By blowing into the open end, people made whistles. Over time these instruments became more complicated. Since they were made of wood, they became known as the woodwind family. Today, woodwind instruments are made of wood, metal, plastic or some combination. They are all basically narrow cylinders or pipes, with holes, an opening at the bottom end and a mouthpiece at the top. Keys cover the holes of most woodwind instruments. They are played by blowing air through the mouthpiece (that's the ​ ​ "wind" in "woodwind") and opening or closing the holes with your fingers to change the pitch. ​ ​ The mouthpieces for some woodwinds, including the clarinet, oboe and bassoon, use a thin piece of wood called a reed, which vibrates when you blow across it. The clarinet uses a single reed made of one piece of ​ ​ wood, while the oboe and bassoon use a double reed made of two pieces joined together. The smaller woodwinds play higher pitches, while the longer and larger instruments play the lower notes.
