THE WOODWIND FAMILY: Now, let’s learn about the woodwind family. There are many members of the woodwind family, and we want you to know their differences. You have three goals:

In general, woodwinds have a long thin shape with many keys. The first woodwinds were made out of wood, and the player covered many holes with his/her fingers. You may already play one of the original woodwinds – the recorder! Although all of these instruments need air to make sound, they each have a different mouthpiece. Flutes and piccolos have a hole to blow air across. and use a mouthpiece with a reed (a thin piece of bamboo) that vibrates against the mouthpiece. , , and English horns have two reeds that are tied tightly together and stick into the top end of the instrument. We’ll take a closer look at this in the following pictures. We will include information on the most common woodwinds that may be found in a beginning band. In case you’re wondering, the recorder is not an instrument normally played in band.
