Two comple- mentary experiments which used 5 seston matrices of different seston quality (SQ) were implemented: (1)algae labeled with Io9Cd was mixed with unlabeled silt, and (2) labeled silt was mixed with unla- beled algae. Io9Cd-A~was determined by a dual-tracer ratio (109~d/241~m)method (DTR) and based on the ingestion rate of '09Cd by the mussel (IRM) (total amount of Io9Cd ingested over the 4 h feeding period). As a result of the non-conservative behavior of u'~m,the DTR underestimated mussel lo9Cd- AEs as compared to the IRM. Therefore only IRM-determined 'O@C~-AEwas considered further. When only algae was spiked, jdgcd-A~swere proportional to diet quality (DQ), (r = 0.98; p < 0.05) with max- imum 'OgCd-AE occurring at the mussel's filter-feeding 'optimum' and where maximum carbon assim- ilation rates have been observed. However, for the spiked-silt exposures, IWcd-A~was independent of DQ, with maximum values of -85 % occurring in all diets except for silt alone. -

The PAH levels were generally low over the year; however, the PAH concentrations increased according to one of two seasonal trends, which were either an increase in PAHs during the cold period, influenced by heating, or a PAH enrichment during the wet period due to higher run-off inputs. The major PAH source was the combustion of fossil fuels and biomass, but a minor input of petrogenic PAHs in some seasons was observed. Higher PAH concentrations were observed in fresh and brackish water compared to the saline waters in the Tumen River estuary, while the PAH concentrations in both types of water were similar in the Partizanskaya River estuary, suggesting different pathways of PAH input into the estuaries. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. The genus Mytilus comprises a large number of bivalve mollusk species distributed throughout the world and many of these species are considered invasive. In South America, many introductions of species of this genus have already taken place, including reports of hybridization between them. Now, the occurrence of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis is reported for the first time from the Brazilian coast. Several specimens of this mytilid were found in a shellfish growing areas in Florianópolis and Palhoça, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. -

Both lineages derive from the Pacific mussel M. trossulus and are identified 17 primarily by the unique genotypes of the nuclear gene EF1α. BTN1 is found in populations of 18 M. trossulus from the Northeast Pacific, while BTN2 has been detected in populations of other 19 Mytilus species worldwide but not in M. trossulus itself. The aim of our study was to examine 20 mussels M. trossulus from the Sea of Japan (Northwest Pacific) for the presence of BTN. -

E-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY: The evolution of the molluscan biota in Sabaudia Lake (Italy, central Tyrrhenian Sea) in the last century is hereby traced on the basis of bibliography, museum type materials, and field samplings carried out from April 2009 to Sep- tember 2011. Biological assessments revealed clearly distinct phases, elucidating the definitive shift of this human-induced coastal lake from a freshwater to a marine-influenced lagoon ecosystem. Records of marine subfossil taxa suggest that previous accommodations to these environmental features have already occurred in the past, in agreement with historical evidence. Faunal and ecological insights are offered for its current malacofauna, and special emphasis is given to alien spe- cies. Within this framework, Mytilodonta Coen, 1936, Mytilodonta paulae Coen, 1936 and Rissoa paulae Coen in Brunelli and Cannicci, 1940 are also considered new synonyms of Mytilaster Monterosato, 1884, Mytilaster marioni (Locard, 1889) and Rissoa membranacea (J. -

This relationship is highlighted, here, considering a set of forty, rather common species of clams collected from French coasts. Interestingly, this negative covariance has two (geometrically related) consequences on the pattern of variation of shell shape at the inter-specific level: (i) An extended range of variation of shell elongation ‘E’ is made compatible with. (ii) A severely restricted range of variation of the ventral convexity ‘K’ of the shell contour. I suggest that: (i) The extended range of interspecific variation of the shell elongation ‘E’ results from a trend towards larger differentiation between species according to this functionally important parameter E, while, in contrast, (ii) The strongly restricted range of variation of the ventral convexity ‘K’ of the shell contour might arguably result from a common need for improved shell resistance, face to mechanical solicitations from the environment, either biotic or abiotic.
