KATHY O’CONNOR LIAISON MANAGER From the Liaison Manager And so, the end of 2017 approaches… Soon we will be heading o in di erent directions to enjoy some well- deserved R and R. Remember to make sure that your pets are adequately looked after while you are out of town.

Looking back at 2017, there were so many highlights, some of which I list below: • A successful Constitutional General Meeting and Annual General Meeting held in February where the new Memorandum of Incorporation and Rules were tabled and approved in addition to the appointment of several new Board members. • Our ever-popular annual social events that have become an institution such as Youth Day Fun Day, Spring Day Fun Day and not forgetting Trick-or-Treat. • We tried some new events this year including a topical Parent Talk about social media and bullying, a Charity Day with a golf day and barn dance, and a Safety Talk for our domestic workers and gardeners. • We also launched a few interesting Clubs this year namely the Business Club run by Marianne van Wyk and the much-anticipated Wine Club which will soon be inviting members to join its fold. • In July, we undertook our annual survey and have noted all the comments and input and will put systems and processes in place to improve areas that need attention. Garden Competition 2017 Winners: • We said goodbye to our CEO Mr Jan de Wet and Well done to all the winners of the garden competition. How to keep running during the holidays BY MARTINA SCHOEN he end of 2017 is upon us and everyone is looking forward to the long-awaited festive T season. Will it be sea, summer and sand, or a white Christmas? Regardless of our plans, we always aspire to incorporate some level of activity in our holidays. However, somewhere along the line (sometimes even before Christmas!) we fall o the wagon and start the new year with resentment, guilt and a few extra kilograms… If you ask your friends and family, they experience the same emotions! How can we then ensure that we remain t during this well-deserved break? We compiled ve key ingredients to keep you going during December:

1. Set weekly goals Your aim during December should not be to increase your performance, but to maintain your current tness level. Set Sundays aside to determine what you want to achieve in the week ahead and to assess what you’ve done. Ensure your goals are realistic and maintainable.

2. Get a running buddy An accountability partner is a terri c way to keep you on track. Find a running buddy on your holiday or if your buddy is spending the holidays elsewhere, set up a WhatsApp group where you can encourage one another.

3. Schedule your run The easiest way for your running intentions to fall at is when you don’t make time for a run. Going on a family outing tomorrow? Ensure you get up early to log those kilometres!

4. Increase the e ort If you don’t want to spend your whole holiday on the road, decrease the distance and time and increase the intensity.

5. Find a race Enter a race early in the new year to keep you motivated during the holidays. Or even better – nd a New Year’s race and start your new year with a bang!

Join the Silver Lakes Athletics Club at our weekly time trials and share your love for running:

When: Every Tuesday at 18h00 Where: Silver Lakes Clubhouse Silver Lakes Athletics For more information on Silver Lakes Athletics Club Club wishes you a blessed contact Christine: 082 443 1119/ [email protected]. festive season!

CORLIA MATHEWS ENVIRONMENT, SOCIAL & ETHICS DIRECTOR Environmental report his month, for my article, instead of going for a walk in the Nature completion of the Halfway House project, which took a lot of time Reserve (which I did anyway), I went for a walk through the Estate. from our sta since we ran the project in-house, busy redesigning and TI have done that many times, but always with an eye on what can making plans to start with the workshop project in the new year. Once we do to improve – what photos can I send Mike at our HOA o ces to again, thank you to all who supported this project. We will do our best ask to x? Thinking about it, you will realise it is quite a negative way of to make you proud of the Estate. looking at our beautiful Estate. There are many mistakes still, and always will be. Especially now that our ‘old lady’ is 25 years old. All who have Regarding the Halfway House, the good news is that it is nished and an older home will know how the maintenance keeps piling up as your we stayed well within the budget and even nished the project ve days property gets older. earlier than expected! We also redesigned and reused our equipment for a new-look playground. Recycling at its best! But go and have a look – it Much the same as us humans… We reach a certain stage and one is looking great! Next year we hope to add a few areas for skateboarding sees just how everything bulges and sags everywhere without proper and other activities that the young adults on our Estate will enjoy. Talk to maintenance! me if there is anything in particular you want us to have a look at – send suggestions to [email protected]. MOST IMPORTANTLY: Thank you I accept part of my job as a member of the Board is to see how the HOA to all our HOA sta who did such a sterling task of this project. At the can make our life on the Estate as special as possible, nding ways to same time, we must mention that CKJ contractors were a pleasure to do it and accepting the responsibility of it being executed by our HOA work with! Thanks a million to all of you! sta . This month, however, I went out of my way to go and nd all the positives we have on the Estate and asked the Intra Muros sta if I could instead of 1500 words, have three pages of photos of our beautiful Estate.

I will try and tell a bit of a story about the photos, but mostly just enjoy! Enjoy our Estate, those of you who stay behind for the holidays – use our newly revamped Estate Clubhouse, restaurant and the other facilities. This includes our squash courts, swimming pool, deli shop and wine tasting room. The third tennis court is nished and if we see the residents utilise this facility, perhaps we will need a fourth court, which will be part of the next set of budgets… perhaps together with a bowling green? If you think a bowling green is a good investment, please email me at [email protected].

And of course, there is the golf course to be enjoyed by golfers as well as us homeowners who like to go for a nice long walk on the more than 7 km of golf course pathways. Remember to extend your walk to the hiking trail in the Game Reserve!

The count of animals in the Nature Reserve in October 2017 is: 12 Kudu, 17 nyala, 26 impala, 23 springbuck (six lambs), 19 blesbuck, four common reedbuck (one lamb), eight mountain reedbuck (three lambs), two waterbuck, four bushbuck, six steenbok, and six grey duiker. We will be re-introducing sable in the new year as well.

Before we get to the photos, there are two items I have to report on.

Firstly: As homeowners of the Estate, you have voted to give us a levy to ‘ x up’ the workshop area of the Estate. We have been working hard to nd a Silver Lakes Athletics solution for the blow we were dealt when we received the new layout of Club wishes you a blessed the stand, together with the ood lines. Due to development upstream from us, this line has moved up considerable and we, for example, festive season! cannot build the new sta quarters in the area where we originally planned to. It would have been under the ood lines. We are now, after

INTRA MUROS DECEMBER 2017 27 ENVIRONMENTAL MATTERS

Secondly: I have been asked about a plant list for the Nature Reserve that the buck will not eat.

I know it can be disheartening to put so much e ort, love and labour into your garden, only to have it devoured by our wild animals. I have seen a kudu eat an aloe until only the main stem was left. I thought “Aloes? Thorns and all?” I would have thought that to be one plant that would be safe! Then I was told that they eat the aloes as natural dip to be free from ticks. So, please keep on planting aloes! Investigating the plant list, here are some pointers I found – and good luck to all of you in the Game Reserve – you live in an awesome part of our Estate!

As you know, the biggest problem is in winter and times of drought. We therefore feed our animals in certain areas in the Game Reserve. But if the rainy season is in full swing and we have green veld, they are likely to bypass ornamental plants and plants that are prickly, poisonous, heavily scented, or just plain tough. Here are some examples:

Animals often spit out fuzzy or prickly plants, simply because they are uncomfortable to eat. However, as all of you cherish your rose bushes know, this does not apply to all prickly plants. Often called "deer candy," rose bushes su er much chomping from animals. But good news – if they are strongly scented, animals seem to avoid them. So, when next visiting Ludwich’s Roses, ask for roses with a strong scent!

Wildlife avoid plants that can make them sick. We all know some plants are poisonous and it is those that animals avoid – but PLEASE, such plants are also poisonous to humans and domestic animals, so you might want to reject them too if you have young children or pets. Animals seem more inclined to take their chances with poisonous shrubs, though, and will eat azaleas, mountain laurels and rhododendrons.

28 INTRA MUROS DECEMBER 2017 ENVIRONMENTAL MATTERS

Because plant-scavenging animals have a more acute sense of smell than humans, they do not like heavy smells. They will usually avoid strong-smelling plants such as alliums, catmints, lavenders, mints, oreganos, sages and thymes. It seems herb gardens can be a bonus in the game reserve. Animals also nd plants with tough or leathery foliage hard to chew, so they aren't enthusiastic about ferns, cycads, irises, heathers, perennial gingers and yuccas.

But as always, there are exceptions to the rule. Even on the ‘tough’ types of plants, new leaves, especially on plants that have been over- fertilised or overwatered, are much more tender and the buck will think you specially planted this ‘dessert’ for them! Animals will also eat the foliage of almost any plant or tree that carries fruit such as blueberries and cherries, whether or not their leaves are leathery.

To all our homeowners, enjoy a wonderful rest, and to those of you who will leave the Estate for holidays and family reunions all over the country, drive safely and come back to Silver Lakes refreshed and full of plans for the new year!
