THE OFFICE OF THE QUEENS BOROUGH PRESIDENT Strategic Policy Statement 2014 Melinda Katz Queens Borough President The Borough of Queens is home to more than 2.3 million residents, representing more than 120 countries and speaking more than 135 languages1. The seamless knit that ties these distinct cultures and transforms them into shared communities is what defines the character of Queens. The Borough’s diverse population continues to steadily grow. Foreign-born residents now represent 48% of the Borough’s population2. Traditional immigrant gateways like Sunnyside, Woodside, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Corona, and Flushing are now communities with the highest foreign-born population in the entire city3. Immigrant and Intercultural Services The immigrant population remains largely underserved. This is primarily due to linguistic and cultural barriers. Residents with limited English proficiency now represent 28% of the Borough4, indicating a need for a wide range of social service support and language access to City services. All services should be available in multiple languages, and outreach should be improved so that culturally sensitive programming can be made available. The Borough President is actively working with the Queens General Assembly, a working group organized by the Office of the Queens Borough President, to address many of these issues. Cultural Queens is amidst a cultural transformation. The Borough is home to some of the most iconic buildings and structures in the world, including the globally recognized Unisphere and New York State Pavilion. Areas like Astoria and Long Island City are establishing themselves as major cultural hubs. In early 2014, the New York City Council designated the area surrounding Kaufman Astoria Studios as the city’s first arts district through a City Council Proclamation The areas unique mix of adaptively reused residential, commercial, and manufacturing buildings serve as a catalyst for growth in culture and the arts. -

She was the eldest of three children of Elsa Rodriguez Vazquez and Luis Rodriguez Nieto, Sr., who had both recently migrated from Puerto Rico as part of Operation Bootstrap. Her father held a variety of jobs, including electronics repair and night security work, while her mother worked as an Avon Lady. After graduating from Seward Park High School in 1974, Rodriguez spent two years immersed in social and cultural activities in her Puerto Rican neighborhood, which became known as Loisaida. She was deeply involved in The Real Great Society, a gang outreach and community empowerment organization created in 1964 to engage youth in addressing local needs, especially sweat equity projects to create affordable housing. She was also an active participant in CHARAS/El Bohio, a cultural center where she taught Puerto Rican folkloric dance. After studying dance at Pratt Institute, Rodriguez graduated from NYU as a dance therapy major in 1982. College research into the sterilization and birth control experimentation on Puerto Rican women planted the seed of later reproductive rights activism. Rodriguez defines herself as a servant-leader. She has continued to combine grassroots social justice work with administrative leadership in non-profit organizations, including Henry Street Settlement, Lower East Side Family Resource Center, Dominican Women’s Development Center, and Casa Atabex. -

For Immediate Release HAILED AS A GREAT ARTIST OF OUR TIME, AWARD-WINNING INTER-DISCIPLINARY ARTIST SHEN WEI OPENS FIRST MAJOR SOLO EXHIBITION AT ASIA SOCIETY HONG KONG CENTER (Hong Kong, March 19, 2016) Continuing its celebration of Asian art, Asia Society Hong Kong Center (ASHK) opens its second exhibition, Shen Wei: Dance Strokes, during the Hong Kong Arts Month, featuring internationally renowned Chinese-American choreographer and contemporary painter Shen Wei. Installed as a site-specific exhibition, Dance Strokes is the first major solo exhibition of the artist’s recent large-scale oil paintings. The works evoke ink play, space, and rolling forms suggestive of Chinese landscape painting traditions. The exhibition is accompanied by a series of specially choreographed outdoor dance performances on ASHK’s rooftop spaces by Shen Wei Dance Arts. “Last year we had over 120,000 visitors came to ASHK, and this year we will bring more interesting programs to the community. In an exciting ‘first’ for our Center, we will not only be presenting one of the great artists of our time, but also working with our architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien to transform the Hong Kong Jockey Club Hall into an exhibition space, with dance performances at the Joseph Lau and Josephine Lau Roof Garden to reflect the multifaceted and experiential nature of Shen’s work. The artist’s paintings will be presented across multiple spaces, each a unique experience for art aficionados to enjoy,” says S. Alice Mong, Executive Director of Asia Society Hong Kong Center. Millions of Individuals and Families Are Served by the Essential Work
July 15, 2014 Open letter to the House of Representatives: Millions of individuals and families are served by the essential work of America’s public charities, which is made possible in part by incentives for charitable giving in our tax code. The House may soon have an opportunity to address tax legislation that would renew and make permanent three key incentives for donations to America’s public charities. We strongly urge you to approve legislation that would renew the IRA charitable rollover and the enhanced incentives for donations of food inventory and land conservation easements, each of which expired as of January 1, 2014. Originally enacted in the Pension Protection Act of 2006 as a way to encourage increased charitable giving, these three provisions have demonstrated a significant impact on the nonprofit community. The IRA charitable rollover increases the ability of older Americans to make gifts to charities by allowing individuals age 70½ or older to donate up to $100,000 to a qualifying public charity directly from their IRAs without incurring tax on the withdrawal. The provision has prompted more than $140 million in gifts to the work of nonprofits since enactment, assisting social service providers, religious organizations, cultural institutions and schools, and other nonprofits. The enhanced deduction for donations of food allows individuals and organizations to reduce their taxable income by providing qualifying food inventory to certain charitable organizations. According to Feeding America, 3.6 billion pounds of food is distributed by food bank members each year. This legislation would significantly increase food bank access to the 70 billion pounds of nutritious food wasted each year, particularly the 6 billion pounds of produce that does not make it to market. -
