Football is a contact sport and as such presents a number of hazards that cause injury. Shin guards cannot always prevent serious injury but are designed and developed to reduce the severity of abrasions and bruises to the player’s shin.

In Europe, shin guards that claim to offer protection to the player are considered to be intermediate category personal protective equipment and as such shin guards must be tested and marked; shin guards are tested against the BS EN 13061:2009 Standard.
