Email: [email protected] Submitted: 27.08.2020; Accepted: 24.12.2020 Abstract The genus Goniothalamus is belonging to the Annonaceae family, consists of ca. 2500 species and found in tropical Southeast Asia. The Goniothalamus essential oils were recognized to possess considerable biological activities with varied chemical composition. This article aims to overview the medicinal uses, chemical compositions, and biological activities of Malaysian Goniothalamus essential oils considered as a medicinal plants, widely used as traditional herbal medicines in the treatment of various diseases. The data were collected from the scientific electronic databases including SciFinder, Scopus, Elsevier, PubMed and Google Scholar. Ten Goniothalamus species have been reported for their essential oils and biological activities. It can be observed that the major components were α-cadinol, terpinen-4-ol, β-eudesmol, β-selinene, linalool, limonene, α-copaene, 1,8-cineole and β-cubebene. In addition, the selected chemical components from the bark, leaf and root oils were analysed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) and were able to cluster in four groups based on relationships and chemical patterns in essential oils. -

I.1* 1Department of Biological Sciences, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, Novena University, PMB 002 Ogume, Delta State, Nigeria 2Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Science, Ekiti State University, PMB 5363, Ado- Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria 3Department of Environmental Biotechnology and Bio-conservation, National Biotechnology Development Agency, Abuja, Nigeria *E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT This study was carried out to investigate the in vitro antibacterial efficacy of velvet tamarind (Dialium guineense Wild) ethanol root extract against three common clinical bacterial isolates (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae) using standard agar well diffusion assay and ciprofloxacin as reference drug. The efficacy (bactericidal and or bacteriostatic effects) of the crude extract was determined by time-kill assay at single and twice the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC). The phytochemical contents of the root extract were also determined using standard techniques. The three bacteria were sensitive to 10 mg/mL of the extract with zone of inhibition diameter ranging from 20.4 ± 1.02 mm (S. aureus) and 15.2 ± 0.25 mm (K. pneumoniae). The inhibitory effect was significant (p<0.05) when compared with 0.002 mg/mL ciprofloxacin (18.8 ± 0.01 to 24.5 ± 0.05 mm). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the extracts ranged from 0.625 – 1.25 mg/mL and 1.25 – 5 mg/mL, while ciprofloxacin gave ≤ 0.064 mg/mL. -

Its current Ecosystem, membership stands at 73, comprising 35 from producer countries and 38 from Biodiversity and consumer countries. The ITTO addresses the problems of tropical forests and tropical forestry, such as deforestation and social issues. People Its objectives are to act as a forum for them into effect; consultation and cooperation, and to Ecosystem, Biodiversity and People ITTO Project PD 635/12 Rev. 2 (F). Buffer Zone Management for Pulong Tau promote trade of tropical timber from National Park with Involvement of Local Communities in Sarawak, Malaysia sustainable sources. The technical committees under which ITTO operates are Economic Information and Market Intelligence, Forest Industry and Reforestation and Forest Management. Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology Department of Chemistry & Biotechnology Investigation of antimicrobial activity and phytochemical characterisation of plant extracts Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry By Savithri Galappathie Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology Swinburne University of Technology October 2018 ii Abstract Traditional medicine based on plant extracts and herbal remedies has been increasingly accepted in Western countries with the modernisation of traditional medicine being a hot area of research in recent years. During 1980-2014, there were 1562 new pharmaceutical drugs developed to treat diseases with about 49% being derived from medicinal plants. There are around 500,000 plant species worldwide but only one percent of these have been used as therapeutic agent. The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC), Kuching, Malaysia, has provided chemical plant extracts from their collection of Southeast Asian plants that were screened for their antibacterial and antifungal properties. The results of this study so far have demonstrated that many of the Sarawak traditional medicinal plants have effects on microorganisms causative agents for diarrhoea, stomachache, fever, headaches, cough and inflammation. Out of fifty Asian plant extract that were screened, six were found to exhibit broad spectrum activity against several strains of bacteria and fungi and there was significant effect against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The use of these plant species by indigenous groups in Malaysia for the treatment of these illnesses can therefore be substantiated by our findings. In addition to this research, a study was undertaken to discover the basis of the healing abilities reported for an Australian bush medicine. -

The pure compounds from Goniothalamus rongklanus and Goniothalamus latestigma were isolated by repeated column chromatography. The structures were recognized by NMR spectral methods. The chemical compounds of ethyl acetate extract (EtOAc) from the stems of G. rongklanus as goniotriol (1) and stigmasterol glucoside (2). The EtOAc leaves extract of G. latestigma yielded a compound, which was 3). Antibacterial study was evaluated using nine strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli 0157: H7, Escherichia coli (ETEC), Escherichia coli (EPEC), Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella typhimuriam, Shigella flexneri and Vibrio cholera) by Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) method. -

A list of the Annonaceae taxa indigenous to the Asia-Pacific Region (including Australia) is presented, including full synonymy and typification with an outline of the geographic distribution. Some 1100 species in 40 genera are listed. A number of nomenclatural changes are made. The species of Artabotrys from Java previously referred to as Artabotrys blumei Hook.f. & Thomson is described here as Artabotrys javanicus I.M.Turner, because A. blumei is shown to be the correct name for the Chinese species generally known as A. hongkongensis Hance. The type of Uvaria javana Dunal is a specimen of U. dulcis Dunal. The new combination Uvaria blumei (Boerl.) I.M.Turner based on U. javana var. blumei Boerl. is therefore proposed as the correct name for the species known for many years as U. javana. Other new combinations proposed are Fissistigma parvifolium (Craib) I.M.Turner, Friesodielsia borneensis var. sumatrana (Miq.) I.M.Turner, Sphaerocoryne touranensis (Bân) I.M.Turner and Uvaria kontumensis (Bân) I.M.Turner. The replacement name Sphaerocoryne astiae I.M.Turner is provided for Popowia gracilis Jovet-Ast. Melodorum fruticosum Lour. is reduced to a synonym of Uvaria siamensis (Scheff.) L.L.Zhou et al. Many new lectotypes and neotypes are designated. -
