The taxonomy and distribution of Pacifi c Annonaceae are reviewed in light of recent changes in generic delimitations. A new species of the genus Monoon from the Solomon Archipelago is described, Monoon salomonicum I.M.Turner & Utteridge sp. nov., together with an apparently related new species from New Guinea, Monoon pachypetalum I.M.Turner & Utteridge sp. nov. The confi rmed presence of the genus in the Solomon Islands extends the generic range eastward beyond New Guinea. Two new species of Huberantha are described, Huberantha asymmetrica I.M.Turner & Utteridge sp. nov. and Huberantha whistleri I.M.Turner & Utteridge sp. nov., from the Solomon Islands and Samoa respectively. Abstract Background: Phylogenetic analyses of the Annonaceae consistently identify four clades: a basal clade consisting of Anaxagorea, and a small 'ambavioid' clade that is sister to two main clades, the 'long branch clade' (LBC) and 'short branch clade' (SBC). Divergence times in the family have previously been estimated using non-parametric rate smoothing (NPRS) and penalized likelihood (PL). Here we use an uncorrelated lognormal (UCLD) relaxed molecular clock in BEAST to estimate diversification times of the main clades within the family with a focus on the Asian genus Pseuduvaria within the SBC. Two fossil calibration points are applied, including the first use of the recently discovered Annonaceae fossil Futabanthus. -

3 Plants for Chemotherapy of Neoplastic Diseases GENERAL CONCEPT Each year in the United States more than 1 million people are diagnosed with cancer, and about 500,000 people die from the disease. For the most part, the reason that cancer is a fatal disease is that cancer cells can invade through, and metastasize to, distant organs in the body. The hallmarks of malignant neoplastic tissue are unregulated cell proliferation, invasiveness, and metastasis to distant sites in the body. Surgery and radiotherapy can eradicate localized tumors but may fail because the cancer may have metastasized to other areas of the body; chemotherapy, if used properly, may control or eliminate metastasis. The array of drugs used for the treatment of cancer includes antimetabolites (methotrexate [Trexall®]), fluoouracil (Efudex®), mercaptopurine (Puri-Nethol®), cytarabine (Cytosar®), covalent DNA-binding drugs (nitrogen mustards, alkylating agents), noncovalent binding drugs (anthracyclines), antiestrogens, and inhibitors of chromatin function. Examples of inhibitors of chromatin function derived from flowering plants (Fig. 80) are etoposide (lignan) and alkaloids camptothecin, Vinca alkaloids, and 7 epitaxol. The rhi- zome of Podophyllum peltatum L. (May apple, Berberidaceae) has been used to remove warts and to relieve the bowels from costiveness since very early times. Annonaceae is a major pantropical plant family with 109 genera and ca. 2450 species, occurring across all major and minor tropical forests of the world. Baits were designed by sequencing the transcriptomes of five species from two of the largest Annonaceae subfamilies. Orthologous loci were identified. The resulting baiting kit was used to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships at two different levels using concatenated and gene tree approaches: a family wide Annonaceae analysis sampling 65 genera and a species level analysis of tribe Piptostigmateae sampling 29 species with multiple individuals per species. -

Neisosperma, 12), and Rauvolfia (8). will work up the text for the Flora using existing monographs of his own of Tabernaemontana, Voacanga, and Lorence & Wagner's of Lepinia. F.I. van Nek (WAG) has started a monograph of Carissa for Africa, but may do the Asian ones as well. Dr. L.G. Saw (KEP) will study Kopsia for N. Borneo and revise the family for the Tree Flora of Sabah and Sarawak. Sidiyasa is monographing Alstonia for his Ph.D. Y.-P. Yang (KUN) will come to WAG in January 1995 to monograph 4 genera present in China, at least the first and last one have some representatives in Malesia: Epigynum (10), Parepigynum (1), Sindechites (2), and Trachelospermum (15). -

Christophe Wiart School of Pharmacy, The University of Nottingham (Malaysia Campus), Jalan Broga, 43500 Semenyih, Selangor, Malaysia Irrespective of the presence of cytotoxic acetogenins and styryl-lactones in the genus Goniothalamus, only 22 species in the genus Goniothalamus, out of 160 species (13.7%) have so far been investigated. In an effort to promote further research on the genus Goniothalamus which could represent a source of drugs for the treatment of cancers and bacterial infections, this work offers a broad analysis of current knowledge on Goniothalamus species. Therefore, it includes (i) taxonomy (ii) botanical description (iii) traditional medicinal uses and (iv) phytochemical and pharmacological studies. We discuss the molecular mechanisms of actions of acetogenins and styryl-lactones, with some emphasis on the possible involvement of protein kinase, Bax and TRAIL receptors in the cytotoxic effects of styryl-lactones. We also report (v) the growth inhibition of several nosocomial bacteria by Goniothalamus. scortechinii. The crude methanol extract of G. scortechinii showed a good and broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. SYMPOSIUM PROGRAMME 11 to 15 July 2016 Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh CLASSIFY CULTIVATE CONSERVE WELCOME MESSAGE On behalf of the organising committee it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Edinburgh, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and the 10th International Flora Malesiana Symposium. This year’s symposium brings together taxonomists, horticulturists and conservationists from across the world to discuss their research and conservation activities on the plant diversity of the Malesian region. The theme of this year’s symposium is ‘Classify, Cultivate, Conserve’. At the heart of the symposium is the taxonomic research which underpins all biodiversity research, in particular publications that document and help us better understand the massive diversity of the region. In this symposium we also want to highlight and celebrate the role that horticulture has had in helping us understand this diversity and how it contributes to conservation actions. We hope that by bringing taxonomists, horticulturists and conservationists together in a single symposium, we will better understand the needs of each other and how to be more efficient and effective in helping describe and protect the plant diversity of the region. The symposium is about bringing people together who are passionate about Malesian plants, and about inspiring them to go forward to develop and deliver new and exciting research and conservation projects. It is also about meeting old friends and making new ones. We hope that the scientific and social programme we have put together will encourage you to do both. The efficacy (bactericidal and or bacteriostatic effects) of the crude extract was determined by time-kill assay at single and twice the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC). The phytochemical contents of the root extract were also determined using standard techniques. The three bacteria were sensitive to 10 mg/mL of the extract with zone of inhibition diameter ranging from 20.4 ± 1.02 mm (S. aureus) and 15.2 ± 0.25 mm (K. pneumoniae). The inhibitory effect was significant (p<0.05) when compared with 0.002 mg/mL ciprofloxacin (18.8 ± 0.01 to 24.5 ± 0.05 mm). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the extracts ranged from 0.625 – 1.25 mg/mL and 1.25 – 5 mg/mL, while ciprofloxacin gave ≤ 0.064 mg/mL. -

F. and G. andersonii J. Sinclair) were examined by capillary GC and GC-MS. The chemical components were identified by comparison of their mass spectral data with those existing in the Wiley library, their retention indices and co-chromatography of some constituents with authentic samples on two columns of different polarity. The leaf oils of G. uvariodes and G. malayanus were made up mainly of sesquiterpenoids where β-cubebene (15.2%) and β-selinene (33.6%) were the most abundant compounds, respectively. The bark oils of both species were also rich in sesquiterpenoids with eudesmols as the major compounds. The root oil of G. malayanus was qualitatively similar to its bark oil. However, the major group of compounds in the root oil of G. uvariodes was monoterpenoids where terpinen-4-ol (39.5%) and 1,8-cineole (14.0%) were the main representatives. Monoterpenoid was also the major group in the bark oil of G. macrophyllus with terpinen-4-ol, (Z)-β-ocimene, α-terpineol and 1,8-cineole present in significant amounts.
