Press Release Isa Genzken. Window Hauser & Wirth London Reopening by appointment on 15 June 2020 Reopening to the public from 1 July - 1 August 2020 Hauser & Wirth London is delighted to reopen ‘Window’, an exhibition by Isa Genzken featuring a new and unseen body of work. Genzken’s immersive environment expands on the themes of travel, through elements of an aircraft cabin, and the window as a juncture between interior and exterior spaces. In this respect, it reveals the artist’s interest in architecture and light, a topic of enduring resonance in her work as seen in the landmark exhibition in Chicago in 1992, ‘Everybody Needs at Least One Window’. Isa Genzken has long been considered one of Germany’s most important and influential contemporary artists. Since the 1970s, Genzken’s multifaceted practice has encompassed sculpture, photography, found-object installation, film, drawing and painting. Her work borrows from the aesthetics of Minimalism, punk culture and assemblage art to confront the conditions of human experience in contemporary society and the uneasy social climate of capitalism. Throughout her fifty-year career, Genzken’s primary focus has always been sculpture, and although her style has remained varied, her work has maintained a striking common thread and internal truth to both her vision and to the works of art themselves. The exhibition begins with ‘Saal (Room)’ made in 1989, a concrete sculpture which rises from its stark metal stand like a Brutalist architectural model. Oscillating between construction and destruction, it exists somewhere between fragmented ruin and autonomous space, appraising the lasting influence of modern architecture and its social and cultural implications, while paving the way for the ‘Fenster’ series that would follow. -

The interview took place at the home of Jon Shirley in Medina, Washington, and was conducted by Mija Riedel for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, and the Frick Collection. Jon Shirley and Mija Riedel have reviewed this transcript. Their corrections and emendations appear below in brackets with initials. On the Production of the New, and Other Movements in the Work of Wolfgang Tillmans Prelude: How a visitor may be led Warsaw, January 2012. Ascending the majestic staircase of the classicist art palace built between 1890 and 1900 for the Towarzystwo Zachęty Sztuk Pięknych, the then Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts, and now home to the Zachęta Naradowa Galeria Sztuki, Poland’s National Gallery, I make my way up to Wolfgang Tillmans’ exhibition Zachęta. Ermutigung (Zachęta. Encouragement). En route I see large paper-drop pictures hanging in niches that must originally have been intended for paintings. These close-ups of sheets of curling, curving photographic paper with shimmering and gleaming polychrome surfaces are unframed, held in position by the foldback clips that Tillmans uses to present his works on paper. With the three-dimensionality of the images and the three-dimensionality of the physical objects, the paper-drop pictures perform a dance of gravity, materials, reflections and shadows. They show what they are, even if not completely. For the difference between the materiality of the photographic paper ‘in’ the pictures and the archival sheets exhibited here (207 × 138 centi- metres) that have absorbed the ink-jet prints, prevents any over-hasty identification. -

Stephen Russell The first-person dream-frame nar rative served as the most popular English poetic form in the later Mid dle Ages. In The English Dream Vision, Stephen Russell contends that the poetic dreams of Chaucer, Lang- land, the Pearl poet, and others employ not simply a common exter nal form but one that contains an internal, intrinsic dynamic or strategy as well. He finds the roots of this dis quieting poetic form in the skep ticism and nominalism of Augustine, Macrobius, Guillaume de Lorris, Ockham, and Guillaume de Conches, demonstrating the interdependence of art, philosophy, and science in the Middle Ages. Russell examines the dream vision's literary contexts (dreams and visions in other narratives) and its ties to medieval science in a review of medi eval teachings and beliefs about dreaming that provides a valuable survey of background and source material. ISA GENZKEN: RETROSPECTIVE BRINGS TOGETHER ALMOST 40 YEARS OF GENZKEN’S INVENTIVE AND DEEPLY INFLUENTIAL WORK IN THE FIRST U.S. MUSEUM RETROSPECTIVE OF THE ARTIST Isa Genzken: Retrospective November 23, 2013–March 10, 2014 The Joan and Preston Robert Tisch Exhibition Gallery, sixth floor The Agnes Gund Garden Lobby, first floor NEW YORK, November 13, 2013—The Museum of Modern Art presents Isa Genzken: Retrospective, the first major U.S. exhibition to encompass the artist’s oeuvre, on view from November 23, 2013, to March 10, 2014. Spanning almost 40 years of Genzken’s inventive, audacious, and deeply influential artwork, the exhibition brings together more than 150 objects in an astonishing variety of techniques, including assemblage, sculpture, painting, photography, collage, drawing, artist’s books, film, and large-scale installations. A majority of the works in the exhibition are on view in the U.S. for the first time, including Schauspieler (Actors) (2013), a large-scale installation, while others have rarely been publicly exhibited anywhere. Isa Genzken: Retrospective is co-organized by The Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the Dallas Museum of Art. The exhibition is organized by Sabine Breitwieser, Chief Curator, Department of Media and Performance Art (until January 31, 2013), and Laura Hoptman, Curator, Department of Painting and Sculpture, MoMA; Michael Darling, the James W.
