Nicolaus Schafhausen, director of Witte de With, Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam, is the commissioner. The exhibition in the German Pavilion was commissioned by the Federal Foreign Of- fice of the Federal Republic of Germany and will be carried out in co-operation with the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa). The German Pavilion’s main sponsor is Deutsche Bank. For over thirty years, Isa Genzken (b. 1948) has been creating a multi-facetted oeu- vre, which is continuously developing and revealing new approaches. Her extensive work consists of sculptures and installations, photos, collages and films. Isa Genzken’s work for Venice will be site- and context-specific. “Isa Genzken is one of the most uncompromising artists of today. She pinpoints cur- rent times like practically no other contemporary artist”, Nicolaus Schafhausen ex- plains his choice. “Isa Genzken is a sculptor. This seemingly simple realisation, however, is relatively complex in view of Genzken’s work, in which the classic concept of the genre is both questioned and reinforced. We are very fortunate to have this artist”, Schafhausen continues, “Isa Genzken introduces her viewers to new and complex correlations. In her works, she discusses matters that truly move and affect us as a society. The aesthetic understanding apparent in her work stems from a multi-dimensional framework of references, commenting on social as well as artistic notions. Genzken’s ´productions´ have a strong theatrical element to them, which challenges the viewer both intellectually, and emotionally. For Isa Genzken, life and existence are just as complex as art itself. Her creative work stands in contradiction to a “one-trick pony” society and culture, which searches for happiness in simple answers. This is perhaps the reason why she is so important and influential to many international artists of sub- sequent generations”, the commissioner elaborates. “My previous work with Isa Genzken counts as one of my most productive experi- ences as a curator. I am absolutely convinced that the special challenge of working on the German Pavilion will enable Isa Genzken to create new symbolic spaces that will seize reality in an extraordinary way”, Schafhausen concludes. ************************************************************************************************** In May 2006, the German Foreign Minister Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier appointed Nicolaus Schafhausen as the commissioner of the official German contribution for the 52nd International Art Exhibition in Venice 2007. Traditionally, the Federal Republic of Germany is represented at the art biennale with a national contribution, commissioned and financed to a large extent by the Federal Foreign Office. The Stuttgart-based Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa) supports the participa- tion of German artists at biennales worldwide: For example, in 2005 at the 51st Bien- nale in Venice, at the 9th Biennale in Istanbul, at the 1st Biennale in Moscow, at the 2nd Biennale in Prague, and at the Architecture Biennale in Sao Paolo. Furthermore, the Institute cooperates with the German Pavilion’s team in realising the German contribu- tion, and carries the financial responsibility. For over 25 years, Deutsche Bank has been carrying out pioneering work by commit- ting itself to contemporary art. Its programme comprises the largest corporate collec- tion worldwide with over 50,000 works of art, the exhibition space Deutsche Guggen- heim in Berlin and a very varied exhibiting, commissioning and sponsoring pro- gramme. By supporting the German Pavilion at the 52nd Biennale in Venice, the bank will be demonstrating its continuous international commitment to art. Further informa- tion on Deutsche Bank Art is available under www.deutsche-bank-art.com The 52nd International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia 2007 will take place from the 10th of June until the 21st of November 2007. ************************************************************************************************** The team of the German Pavilion includes: Nicolaus Schafhausen, Rotterdam – commissioner Sophie von Olfers, Rotterdam – project coordinator Sven Bergmann, Bonn – press and public relations Roger Bundschuh, Bundschuh Architects, Berlin – architecture Markus Weisbeck, Surface, Frankfurt am Main – design Witte de With, Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam – technical realisation Contact: Press Contact: Deutscher Pavillon Deutscher Pavillon Sophie von Olfers Sven Bergmann Witte de With Meckenheimer Allee 125 Center for Contemporary Art 53115 Bonn Witte de Withstraat 50 Germany 3012 BR Rotterdam The Netherlands Tel. 0049 (0)228.266 5275 Tel. 0031 (0)104110144 Mobile 0049 (0)179.534 1563 [email protected] [email protected] www.deutscher-pavillon.org German Pavilion 52nd International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia: in brief Duration: 10 June to 21 November 2007 Press preview Biennale: 7 to 9 June 2007 Accreditations on http://www.labiennale.org/en/press/art/accreditation Press conference 6 June 2007, 3.00 – 5.00 p.m. German Pavilion: German Center of Venetian Studies, Venice Accreditations on [email protected] Preview German Pavilion: 7 June 2007, 1.00 p.m. Director and his theme: Robert Storr “Think with the senses, feel with the mind” Artist representing Germany: Isa Genzken Exhibition title: Oil Commissioner of the German Pavilion: Nicolaus Schafhausen Catalogue: Isa Genzken "Oil" Nicolaus Schafhausen (ed.) includes a conversation between Isa Genzken and Nicolaus Schafhausen, as well as texts by Liam Gil- lick, Juliane Rebentisch, Vanessa Joan Müller and Willem de Rooij. Her extensive work consists of sculptures and installations, photos, collages and films. The choice and combination of different materials are of great significance in Isa Genzken’s works. She finds the necessary ‘components’ at DIY centres, architecture supply shops and department stores. While Isa Genzken used to work a lot with wood, plaster, epoxy resins and often concrete - the substance of modernity - she now fa- vours plastic, synthetic materials and a large variety of mirrors. She also uses basic commodities and consumer goods, such as chairs – both classic designer pieces and cheap camping furniture – pieces of clothing, kitschy figurines, plastic dolls and ani- mals. Isa Genzken’s precise settings and arrangements, the unusual combination of mate- rials and the both fragile and monumental constructions reflect the surrounding world and the frailty of human existence. Her oeuvre explores the space between publicity and private artistic autonomy. It reveals the interface where personal feelings touch upon universality. In this way, Isa Genzken dissolves formally and conceptually rigid structures and ideas with an unrestricted freedom. The resulting works can be per- ceived and experienced on many different levels. During a conversation with Wolfgang Tillmans, Isa Genzken explained what a sculp- ture should look like in her opinion: “It should have a certain connection with reality. That is to say, not muddle-headed and certainly not made-up – sort of off the mark and polite (…)

  • Isa Genzken. Window
Press Release Isa Genzken. Window Hauser & Wirth London Reopening by appointment on 15 June 2020 Reopening to the public from 1 July - 1 August 2020 Hauser & Wirth London is delighted to reopen ‘Window’, an exhibition by Isa Genzken featuring a new and unseen body of work. Genzken’s immersive environment expands on the themes of travel, through elements of an aircraft cabin, and the window as a juncture between interior and exterior spaces. In this respect, it reveals the artist’s interest in architecture and light, a topic of enduring resonance in her work as seen in the landmark exhibition in Chicago in 1992, ‘Everybody Needs at Least One Window’. Isa Genzken has long been considered one of Germany’s most important and influential contemporary artists. Since the 1970s, Genzken’s multifaceted practice has encompassed sculpture, photography, found-object installation, film, drawing and painting. Her work borrows from the aesthetics of Minimalism, punk culture and assemblage art to confront the conditions of human experience in contemporary society and the uneasy social climate of capitalism. Throughout her fifty-year career, Genzken’s primary focus has always been sculpture, and although her style has remained varied, her work has maintained a striking common thread and internal truth to both her vision and to the works of art themselves. The exhibition begins with ‘Saal (Room)’ made in 1989, a concrete sculpture which rises from its stark metal stand like a Brutalist architectural model. Oscillating between construction and destruction, it exists somewhere between fragmented ruin and autonomous space, appraising the lasting influence of modern architecture and its social and cultural implications, while paving the way for the ‘Fenster’ series that would follow.

On the Production of the New, and Other Movements in the Work of Wolfgang Tillmans Prelude: How a visitor may be led Warsaw, January 2012. Ascending the majestic staircase of the classicist art palace built between 1890 and 1900 for the Towarzystwo Zachęty Sztuk Pięknych, the then Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts, and now home to the Zachęta Naradowa Galeria Sztuki, Poland’s National Gallery, I make my way up to Wolfgang Tillmans’ exhibition Zachęta. Ermutigung (Zachęta. Encouragement). En route I see large paper-drop pictures hanging in niches that must originally have been intended for paintings. These close-ups of sheets of curling, curving photographic paper with shimmering and gleaming polychrome surfaces are unframed, held in position by the foldback clips that Tillmans uses to present his works on paper. With the three-dimensionality of the images and the three-dimensionality of the physical objects, the paper-drop pictures perform a dance of gravity, materials, reflections and shadows. They show what they are, even if not completely. For the difference between the materiality of the photographic paper ‘in’ the pictures and the archival sheets exhibited here (207 × 138 centi- metres) that have absorbed the ink-jet prints, prevents any over-hasty identification.

  • ISA GENZKEN 23 November 2019 – 15 February 2020 Opening Reception, 22 November 2019, 6-8 Pm
ISA GENZKEN 23 November 2019 – 15 February 2020 Opening Reception, 22 November 2019, 6-8 pm Peder Lund is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition in Norway by one of the most influential artists of our time, Isa Genzken (German, b. 1948). On view will be a selection of the most important recent works by the artist: five major sculptural works, as well as two outstanding wall works. Genzken’s strength is to operate fearlessly in various mediums, and her style has evolved significantly over the years. Many say that she has revived the medium of assemblage and sculpture in general. Her intelligent ensembles composed of cheap materials are loaded with art historical, symbolical, and political references, and her work is celebrated by critics and artists alike. In 2017, Genzken received the renowned Goslarer Kaiserring (eng. “Imperial Ring”) award from the city of Goslar, and this year, Genzken won the important Nasher Prize to honor her as one of the most significant artists of our time. In many of Genzken's works, her choice of materials references the excessive and mindless consumerism which a capitalistic society thrives on. Her use of bricolage in most of her later works is a quality of her oeuvre that must not only be interpreted on a formal level but also contextually. We know from her earlier and more minimalistic sculptures how precise and aestheti- cally pleasing her works can be, and it is clear that the specific artistic style she created later on masterfully embodies many social and art historical issues important to the artist, such as her fantastic series of the New Buildings maquettes, her Actors mannequins, and her famous Nefertiti readymades.

  • Plateau of Humankind: the 49Th Venice Biennale’, CIRCA 97, Autumn 2001: 50-51
Maeve Connolly, ‘Plateau of Humankind: The 49th Venice Biennale’, CIRCA 97, Autumn 2001: 50-51. The theme of the 49th Biennale at Venice is Platea dell’umanità, Plateau of Humankind, Plateau der Menschheit, Plateau de l’humanité. Refigured as a ‘plateau’, the exhibition is, according to curator Harald Szeemann, a “place which one looks at and from which one will be seen, a place in which the public onlooker is the protagonist and the measure of things, a place of encounter between artist, work and spectator”.1 But through the transformation of linguistic difference into a brand name, Szeemann inadvertently calls attention to both the imperialist origins of the Biennale itself and the limits of his own utopian project. In the introduction to the exhibition catalogue, critic and philosopher Bazon Brock suggests that a wide range of artistic practices (from Beuys to Benetton advertising campaigns) lead the way towards this “plateau of friendship”.2 But, he suggests, “religious wars (Northern Ireland), wars of nationality (Basque), cultural wars (Ex- Yugoslavia)” will remain until “dogmatic conviction” is given up in favour of friendship. The plateau is therefore reserved for those whose have abandoned excessive conviction, and the particularities of cultural or political difference.3 If Szeemann’s approach to the 1999 Biennale was characterised by disruption of established classifications and divisions, the ‘plateau’ of 2001 is based upon a less focused expansion of these classifications, articulated in various ways. Two newly refurbished venues have been opened at the Arsanale complex, a sixteenth century munitions factory built around a harbour, and these are used to house large scale projects by established artists such as Richard Serra and Ilya and Emilia Kabakov.4 Poetry and ‘net.art’ are represented within the Biennale for the first time and the work of non-Western curators is also recognised, through a parallel exhibition of conceptualism in contemporary African, Authentic/Ex-centric, selected by Salah M.

Journal On Biennials Why Venice? Vol. I, No. 1 (2020) and Other Exhibitions Clarissa Ricci Towards a Contemporary Venice Biennale: Reassessing the Impact of the 1993 Exhibition Abstract This paper argues that Cardinal Points of Art, directed by Achille Bonito Oliva has been decisive in the formation of the contemporary Venice Biennale. The 45th Venice Biennale, (1993) was memorable for many reasons: the first exhibi- tion of Chinese painters in Venice, its transnational approach, and because it was the last time the Aperto exhibition was shown. Nevertheless, this was a complex and much criticised Biennale whose specific characteristics are also connected to the process of reform that the institution had been undergoing since the 1970s. The analysis of the exhibition starts with the examination of this legacy and continues by questioning Bonito Oliva’s curatorial contribution in order to define the specific features which helped to shape the contemporary Venice Biennale. • Moma Retrospective: the Strange Brilliance of Isa Genzken
MoMA Retrospective: The Strange Brilliance of Isa Genzken By Ulrike Knöfel Translated from the German by Christopher Sultan October 25, 2013 Courtesy Galerie Buchholz, Berlin/Köln One of the most important artists of her generation, sculptor Isa Genzken's works of cryptic, haunting beauty sprang from a life fraught with addiction, mental illness and a grisly family history. Now, the Museum of Modern Art in New York is paying tribute to the Berlin artist with a retrospective. Perhaps this visit isn't a good idea, after all. Isa Genzken fell a few months ago, suffering a head injury. She wasn't in the best of health before the accident, and her recovery has been slow. She walks gingerly through her studio, a bright and inviting space consisting of several large rooms in a former factory. It takes her a long time to get to the sofa in the back. When she sits down, a cigarette in her hand, she looks around the room. Her voice sounds halting, but her words are clear and forceful. She is surrounded by her work. A piece of interior trim from an aircraft, complete with windows, is hanging in the back room. She often uses windows in her work. Photos taped to a board in another part of her Berlin studio depict the disheveled back of her head. There is an unfinished work next to a window.
