E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Two new, brachypterous species of Limnellia are described from specimens collected in the Venezuelan Andes: L. vounitis (Trujillo: Bocon, La Cristalina (Andes; 09°14.7′N, 70°19.1′W; 2500 m)) and L. flavifrontis (Mérida: Mérida, Sierra Ne- vada National Park (Laguna Negra; 8°47.1'N; 70°48.4'W; 3300 m)). To facilitate identification of these unusual species, we have included a diagnosis of the tribe Scatellini and of the genus Limnellia and have also provided an annotated key to the South American genera of this tribe. The descriptions are supplemented with illustrations, photographs, and scan- ning electron micrographs of external structures and structures of the male terminalia. TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

ECOLOGY AND POPULATION BIOLOGY Biology and Immature Stages of Brachydeutera sturtevanti (Diptera: Ephydridae), a Hyponeustic Generalist J. B. KEIPER AND W. E. WALTON Department of Entomology, University of California, Riverside, CA 92521 Ann. Entomol. Soc. Am. 93(3): 468Ð475 (2000) ABSTRACT Brachydeutera sturtevanti Wirth is a shore ßy found commonly in a variety of lentic habitats, including ephemeral pools, in the American Southwest and northern Mexico. We con- ducted Þeld studies and laboratory rearings to elucidate the morphology and trophic ecology of this colonizer species important to newly ßooded habitats such as constructed wetlands. The larvae are generally hyponeustic, suspended from the water surface by hydrofuge hairs on the posterior spiracles. All instars exhibit extremely versatile feeding strategies by collecting or scraping algae and detritus from solid substrates, or by bringing their mouthparts to the water surface and creating a vortex to initiate Þlter feeding. The mouthhooks are modiÞed to form dorsoventrally-ßattened plates lined with stout projections that facilitate the versatile larval feeding. The incubation period under laboratory conditions (20Ð22ЊC) was 1Ð4 d; the three stadia lasted 3Ð5 d each while the pupal period was 6Ð8 d. The results of a colonization experiment with 15 liter tubs containing distilled water (controls, C), oligotrophic lake water (L), lake water with a tule extract (T), lake water supple- mented with the green alga Chlamydomonas (A), or lake water with both a tule extract and algae (TA) illustrated the ability of B. sturtevanti to colonize and complete larval development in habitats varying broadly in food quality. Adults were equally attracted to all treatments and each treatment produced equivalent numbers of puparia. -

Scatellini was proposed by Wirth & Stone, 1956 and currently includes 242 described species in nine genera. The tribe has representatives in all biogeographic regions and about 70 species occur in the Neotropical Region. Prior to this study, only two species were recorded from Brazil: Scatella obscura and Limnellia itatiaia. In this paper, species of Scatellini from Brazil are reviewed with an emphasis on the fauna from southern Brazil, where six new species have been discovered and are described herein: Scatella praia, S. plaumanni, S. rara, Scatophila darrowae, S. dianneae, and S. prainha. To facilitate identification of the tribe and included genera and species, we have included diagnoses of these taxa and have also provided an annotated key to the Neotropical genera in Scatellini. We have also provided illustra- tions of structures of the male terminalia of all included species of the genus Scatophila. KEY WORDS. Neotropical Region; shore flies; taxonomy. (WNM) Depart- ment of Entomology, Smithsonian Institution, NHP 169, PO Box 37012, Washington, DC 20013-7012, USA Abstract A new genus and species of the tribe Dagini (subfamily Ephydrinae), Sinops sichuanensis, are described from specimens collected in China (Sichuan: Emeishan Mountain), and three species for- merly comprising “the fluvialis group” of Psilephydra Hendel are transferred to the new genus (S. fluvialis (Miyagi), S. kaskiensis (Mathis) and S. nepalensis (Mathis)) as new combinations. A cla- distic analysis of the new genus with related genera in the tribe Dagini is presented and discussed, and keys to the genera of Dagini and to the species of the new genus are presented. Key words: Diptera, Ephydridae, Sinops, new genus, new species, China Introduction We recently studied material collected in the Sichuan Province of China and discovered an undescribed species that belongs to a clade that had been recognized as “the fluvialis group” of Psilephydra Hendel (Mathis & Zatwarnicki 1988). This group of four species, including a new species described below, is sufficiently distinct morphologically from Psilephydra that we are here describing it as a new genus in the tribe Dagini, subfamily E phydrinae. In addition to its morphological distinctiveness, and as a further indication of its generic status, our preliminary phylogenetic assessment of the group positions it as the sister group to the lineage giving rise to Physemops Cresson and Psilephydra (Fig. -
