Description of the native vegetation under application Vegetation Description Beard Vegetation Associations have been mapped at a 1:250,000 scale for the whole of Western Australia. One Beard vegetation Association has been mapped within the application area (GIS Database; Shepherd et al ., 2001). 691: Shrublands; Dryandra quercifolia & Eucalyptus spp. thicket. The application area was surveyed by McQuoid in August 2008 (McQuoid, 2008). The following four vegetation units were identified within the application area according to the descriptions of Craig et al . (2007): 1. Eucalyptus flocktoniae/E. phenax (Eflo/Ephe): A tall mallee community with a sparse shrub understorey. Common species found within this vegetation unit include: Mallees: Eucalyptus flocktoniae subsp. flocktoniae , E. phenax subsp. phenax , E. calycogona subsp. calycogona and E. suggrandis subsp. suggrandis; Tall Shrubs: Melaleuca hamata and M. pauperiflora subsp. pauperiflora; Mid Shrubs: Exocarpus aphyllus, Beyeria brevifolia var. brevifolia, Daviesia nematophylla, Dodonaea concinna, Gastrolobium parviflorum forma 'broad', Hakea verrucosa, Melaleuca sp. Gorse, Phebalium tuberculosum and Senna artemisioides subsp. x artemisioides; Low Shrubs: Boronia inornata, Dodonaea pinifolia, Lasiopetalum compactum and Platysace maxwellii ; and Dwarf Shrubs: Acacia erinacea, A. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Guide to Users Background What is the summary for and where does it come from? This summary has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. It highlights important elements of the biodiversity of the region in two ways: • Listing species which may be significant for management because they are found only in the region, mainly in the region, or they have a conservation status such as endangered or vulnerable. • Comparing the region to other parts of Australia in terms of the composition and distribution of its species, to suggest components of its biodiversity which may be nationally significant. The summary was produced using the Australian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. Limitations • ANHAT currently contains information on the distribution of over 30,000 Australian taxa. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. The list of families covered in ANHAT is shown in Appendix 1. Groups notnot yet yet covered covered in inANHAT ANHAT are are not not included included in the in the summary. • The data used for this summary come from authoritative sources, but they are not perfect. -

VEGETATION CONSERVATION NOTICE CPS 8671/1 Persons to whom this vegetation conservation notice is given: (being the occupier of the land described below) Shire of Esperance 77 Windich Street Esperance WA 6450 Land to which this vegetation conservation notice relates (“the land”): Lot 262 on Deposited Plan 209352 as comprised on Certificate of Title Volume LR3022 Folio 738 Reasons for which this vegetation conservation notice is given: This vegetation conservation notice is given because I reasonably suspect on the following grounds that unlawful clearing has taken place and is likely to take place on the land: • The Shire of Esperance 2018 Annual Audit Compliance and Environmental Report for Cleanng Permit CPS 5259/1 shows that native vegetation was cleared outside the area authorised by Clearing Permit CPS 5259/1; • Aerial photography from February 2013 and March 2018 shows that native vegetation was cleared on the land; • A site inspection of the land by a Department of Water and Environmental Regulation Inspector on 10 September 2018 confirmed that clearing was earned out; • The clearing was not authorised by Clearing Permit CPS 5259/1; « The clearing was not for an exempt purpose; and • The clearing is unauthorised clearing under section 51C of the Environmental Protection Act 1986. Middle and South Ironcap, Digger Rock and Hatter Hill N Gibson Science Division, Department of Conservation and Land Management, Wildlife Research Centre, PO Box 51 Wanneroo WA 6065 [email protected] (Manuscript received July 2003; accepted June 2004) Abstract A study of the flora and plant communities of part of Forrestania greenstone belt between Middle Ironcap and Hatter Hill (some 80 km ESE of Hyden), recorded a total flora of 345 taxa of which 342 were native and three were introduced. Three species of threatened flora and 29 taxa being considered for listing were found. Ten species are considered to be endemic to the range and a further eight species are restricted to similar landforms within 100 km of the range. A new species of Stenanthemum is only known from two populations. Despite considerable mining and exploration activity in the area, the flora and vegetation remain poorly known. Thirty-eight quadrats were established along the range system and data from these quadrats were used to define four community types. Differences in these community types were strongly related to edaphic gradients. Very little of the Forrestania vegetation system is reserved and the results of this survey support recommendations for the establishment of nature reserves to conserve this vegetation system. Plant Biodiversity Science, Discovery, and Conservation: Case Studies from Australasia and the Pacific Craig Costion School of Earth and Environmental Sciences Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology University of Adelaide Adelaide, SA 5005 Thesis by publication submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology July 2011 ABSTRACT This thesis advances plant biodiversity knowledge in three separate bioregions, Micronesia, the Queensland Wet Tropics, and South Australia. A systematic treatment of the endemic flora of Micronesia is presented for the first time thus advancing alpha taxonomy for the Micronesia-Polynesia biodiversity hotspot region. The recognized species boundaries are used in combination with all known botanical collections as a basis for assessing the degree of threat for the endemic plants of the Palau archipelago located at the western most edge of Micronesia’s Caroline Islands. A preliminary assessment is conducted utilizing the IUCN red list Criteria followed by a new proposed alternative methodology that enables a degree of threat to be established utilizing existing data. Historical records and archaeological evidence are reviewed to establish the minimum extent of deforestation on the islands of Palau since the arrival of humans. This enabled a quantification of population declines of the majority of plants endemic to the archipelago. In the state of South Australia, the importance of establishing concepts of endemism is emphasized even further. A thorough scientific assessment is presented on the state’s proposed biological corridor reserve network. The report highlights the exclusion from the reserve system of one of the state’s most important hotspots of plant endemism that is highly threatened from habitat fragmentation and promotes the use of biodiversity indices to guide conservation priorities in setting up reserve networks. -
South-West Ravensthorpe Greenstone Belt

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT A quadrat-based survey of the flora of the south-west region of the Ravensthorpe Greenstone Belt identified 321 taxa, including six taxa of conservation significance and three weed species. All of the conservation-listed taxa were known to the area. Range extensions were recorded for three taxa and additional collections of two Austrostipa species currently under taxonomic description were made. Six community types were derived from statistical classification of the 50 quadrats. These community types were similar to those described from other parts of the Ravensthorpe Greenstone Belt. As with the other greenstone belts of the Yilgarn Craton, soil chemical parameters and site physical characteristics were influential in delineating community types. Only a small portion of the study area is in the conservation estate; mining and exploration pressures remain the primary threat to this species-rich area.
