Memory in the Middle Ages: Approaches from Southwestern
CMS MEMORY IN THE MIDDLE AGES APPROACHES FROM SOUTHWESTERN EUROPE Memory was vital to the functioning of the medieval world. People in medieval societies shared an identity based on commonly held memo- MEMORY IN THE MIDDLE AGES THE MIDDLE IN MEMORY ries. Religions, rulers, and even cities and nations justifi ed their exis- tence and their status through stories that guaranteed their deep and unbroken historical roots. The studies in this interdisciplinary collec- tion explore how manifestations of memory can be used by historians as a prism through which to illuminate European medieval thought and value systems.The contributors have drawn a link between memory and medieval science, management of power and remembrance of the dead ancestors through examples from southern Europe as a means and Studies CARMEN Monographs of enriching and complicating our study of the Middle Ages; this is a region with a large amount of documentation but which to date has not been widely studied. Finally, the contributors have researched the role of memory as a means to sustain identity and ideology from the past to the present. This book has two companion volumes, dealing with ideology and identity as part of a larger project that seeks to map and interrogate the signifi cance of all three concepts in the Middle Ages in the West. CARMEN Monographs and Studies seeks to explore the movements of people, ideas, religions and objects in the medieval period. It welcomes publications that deal with the migration of people and artefacts in the Middle Ages, the adoption of Christianity in northern, Baltic, and east- MEMORY IN central Europe, and early Islam and its expansion through the Umayyad caliphate. -

Journal of Levantine Studies Vol. 6, Summer/Winter 2016, pp. 71-87 The Jewish Precedent in the Spanish Politics of Conversion of Muslims and Moriscos* Isabelle Poutrin Université Paris-Est Membre de l’IUF [email protected] The legal elimination of the Jews and Muslims from the Iberian Peninsula forms a remarkably brief chronological sequence.1 In 1492, just after the conquest of Granada, the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, ordered the expulsion of the Jews of Castile and Aragon.2 In 1496, Manuel I ordered the expulsion of the Jews and Muslims of Portugal.3 Two years later, John of Albret and Catherine of Navarre expelled the Jews from their kingdom.4 In 1502 the Catholic Monarchs decreed the expulsion of the Muslims from the entire Crown of Castile.5 And in 1525 Emperor Charles V expelled the Muslims from the Crown of Aragon, which included the kingdoms of Valencia and Aragon and the Principality of Catalonia. -

CÁBALA Y AOJAMIENTO EN EL TRATADO DE LA FASCINACIÓN DE ENRIQUE DE VILLENA. Mariano Villalba Universidad de Buenos Aires e-mail: [email protected] ISSN en trámite [email protected] RESUMEN El Tratado de la fascinación de Enrique de Villena (1384-1438) es el primer texto en la Península Ibérica y el segundo en toda la Europa Occidental dedicado exclusivamente a tratar el tema del aojamiento. Redactado en forma de epístola para su amigo Juan Fernández Válera, en él construyó un discurso apologético de prácticas cabalísticas para curar y proteger contra el aojamiento que circularon a través del rabino Hasdai Crescas y su grupo en la Corte de Juan I de Aragón. Sin embargo, Enrique de Villena debió ajustar su discurso al de la ortodoxia tras las implicancias que cábala y aojamiento tuvieron luego de la Disputa de Tortosa de 1413 y la regulación de las prácticas curativas por parte de las coronas de Aragón y Castilla. PALABRAS CLAVE: cábala, aojamiento, Enrique de Villena KABBALAH AND EVIL EYE IN THE TRATADO DE LA FASCINACIÓN OF ENRIQUE DE VILLENA ABSTRACT The Tratado de la fascinación of Enrique de Villena (1384-1438) is the first text in the Iberian Peninsula and the second in all Western Europe exclusively dedicated to the evil eye. Written as an epistle to his friend Juan Fernández Válera, he built an apologetical discourse of kabalistic practices to cure and protect from the evil eye held by rabbi Hasdai Crescas and his followers in the court of John I of Aragon. However, Enrique de Villena had to tighten his discourse to ortodoxy, as kabbalah and evil eye were compromised practices after the Dispute of Tortosa of 1413 and the regulation of medical practices in the crowns of Aragon and Castile. -

[0212-0267 (2012) 31; 135-163] RESUMEN: En este artículo se realiza una aproximación al pensamiento del fran- ciscano Francesc Eiximenis (c. 1330-1409), uno de los autores más destacados de la Corona de Aragón. Situado en el tránsito de la Edad Media al Renacimiento, su uni- verso mental comparte aspectos de ambos mundos. Si doctrinalmente responde a los cánones del Medioevo, desde un punto de vista social —al reclamar el papel de la burguesía— plantea una economía de signo precapitalista. Desde un punto de vista pedagógico, y en un sentido amplio, se puede considerar a Eiximenis como un inte- lectual preocupado por el fomento de la vida urbana, el protagonismo de la vida activa a través del cultivo de las artes mecánicas, la expansión del saber como un método eficaz para luchar contra la ignorancia, el desarrollo de la lectura como ins- trumento para mejorar el gobierno de las ciudades y la extensión de la cortesía como un modo de atemperar los males causados por el pecado, en especial, la gula. Sin ser un humanista al pie de letra, Eiximenis —autor de una enciclopedia como Lo Cres- tià, escrita a fines del siglo XIV en lengua vulgar para llegar a todos los públicos— contribuye a poner las bases de una cultura pedagógica encaminada a la reforma de la sociedad a través de una serie de elementos —gusto por el saber, elogio del traba- jo, expansión de la cortesía, fomento de la lectura entre las mujeres, etc.— que, en conjunto, preludian y anticipan la llegada de los nuevos tiempos renacentistas. -

SENY Y RAUXA EN RAMON LLULL Y FRANCESC EIXIMENIS Seny and Rauxa in Ramon Llull and Francesc Eiximenis Agustí Boadas Llavat Universidad Ramon Llull (Barcelona) RESUMEN La filosofía romántica caracteriza a la manera de ser catalana con dos palabras: seny, o sentido común, y rauxa, o arrebato. Buscando las raíces de esta caracterización, encontramos dos pensadores franciscanos, el beato Ramon Llull y fray Francesc Eiximenis, representando estas tendencias. A través de sus vidas y escritos, se intentará recoger lo que se puede decir al respecto. Palabras clave: Filosofía catalana, Seny, Rauxa, Ramon Llull, Francesc Eiximenis. ABSTRACT Romantic Philosophy characterizes the way of being Catalan with two main words: seny, com- mon sense, and rauxa, or rapture. Looking for the roots of this characterization, we find two Franciscan thinkers, blessed Ramon Llull and Brother Francesc Eiximenis, representing these tendencies. Through his life and writings, we try to collect what can be said about it. Keywords: Catalan Philosophy, Seny, Rauxa, Ramon Llull, Francesc Eiximenis. 1. LOCOS Y RACIONALISTAS Suele creerse, porque así se define a sí mismo, que el beato Ramon Llull era un foll, un loco. También es común considerar a fray Francesc Eiximenis su antagonista, el máximo representante de lo que se ha llamado el seny catalán, con permiso de san Ramon de Penya- fort.1 Sin embargo, este encasillamiento, aunque útil, suele esconder más problemas que solu- ciones. La taxonomía acostumbra a ser ventajosa en el campo de las ciencias naturales, pero es especialmente oscura en las ciencias del espíritu. Leamos un ejemplo: «¿No es verdad que los mallorquines son superiores a los barceloneses en sutileza de espíritu y agudeza de inge- nio?» —dice un gerundense como Eiximenis, torturador de cuerpos y almas.2 Se ha querido asociar, también, ambos conceptos a lo más intrínseco del espíritu catalán, aquél que se ha querido enraizar en Llull y Eiximenis.
