N.B. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE READER USE 2-PAGE VIEW (BOOK FORMAT WITH SCROLLING ENABLED) IN ACROBAT READER OR BROWSER. “EVEN’ING IT OUT – A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON THE LAST TWO YEARS OF “THE TWILIGHT ZONE” Television Series (minus ‘THE’)” A Study in Three Parts by Andrew Ramage © 2019, The Twilight Zone Museum. All rights reserved. Preface With some hesitation at CBS, Cayuga Productions continued Twilight Zone for what would be its last season, with a thirty-six episode pipeline – a larger count than had been seen since its first year. Producer Bert Granet, who began producing in the previous season, was soon replaced by William Froug as he moved on to other projects. The fifth season has always been considered the weakest and, as one reviewer stated, “undisputably the worst.” Harsh criticism. The lopsidedness of Seasons 4 and 5 – with a smattering of episodes that egregiously deviated from the TZ mold, made for a series much-changed from the one everyone had come to know. A possible reason for this was an abundance of rather disdainful or at least less-likeable characters. Most were simply too hard to warm up to, or at the very least, identify with. But it wasn’t just TZ that was changing. Television was no longer as new a medium. “It was a period of great ferment,” said George Clayton Johnson. By 1963, the idyllic world of the 1950s was disappearing by the day. More grittily realistic and reality-based TV shows were imminent, as per the viewing audience’s demand and it was only a matter of time before the curtain came down on the kinds of shows everyone grew to love in the 50s.

Through the Hall of Fame, residents of Chicago and the world are made aware of the contributions of Chicago’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities and the communities’ efforts to eradicate bias and discrimination. With the support of the City of Chicago Commission on Human Relations, its Advisory Council on Gay and Lesbian Issues (later the Advisory Council on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues) established the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame (changed to the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame in 2015) in June 1991. The inaugural induction ceremony took place during Pride Week at City Hall, hosted by Mayor Richard M. Daley. This was the first event of its kind in the country. Today, after the advisory council’s abolition and in partnership with the City, the Hall of Fame is in the custody of Friends of the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame, an Illinois not- for-profit corporation with a recognized charitable tax-deductible status under Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3).

1 For Immediate Release: March 5, 2012 Media Contact: Steph Gray, Public Relations Coordinator 941.351.9010 ext. 4800; [email protected] Asolo Repertory Theatre Presents The American Character and the 2012-2013 season 2012-2013 Season will kick off Five Year American Character Project (SARASOTA, Fla.)- Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards and Managing Director Linda DiGabriele are pleased to announce Asolo Repertory Theatre’s 54th season, containing four Pulitzer Prize winning plays, Three Tony Award® winners and one world premiere, all centering around the theme The American Character. The American Character Project will examine and celebrate the extraordinary people, culture, history and experiences that make our country unique. It will serve as a guiding, artistic principle for Asolo Rep over the next five seasons. The 2012-2013 season will feature an all American Character season, and the following four seasons will feature select productions that explore, embody, and attempt to define what it truly means to be an American. The project will also increase the commitment to new American playwriting, and Asolo Rep will produce at least one world premiere each season. “The American Character Project is a five year artistic initiative that poses a series of galvanizing questions: what is the American character? How did it come to be? What is its nature? How has it evolved into what it is now? Where is it going?” said Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards. “It’s impossible to ever concretely define such a vast, far-reaching concept as the American character, but that is precisely why it is worth exploring.

New On Video & DVD Rockford Files Season 5 This classic detective series successfully marries comedy with drama to cre- ate an Emmy-winning formula. The ever-charming James Garner plays the title character, Jim Rockford. Formerly imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit, Rockford now makes a (meager) living as a private eye living in Malibu--in a mobile home. Specializing in reopening closed cases, the aloof ex-con's investigations involve frequent run-ins with thieves, killers, and the police. With an irreverent wit and frequent beatings that separate him from other detective characters of the day, Rockford remains one of TV's most memorable men. This release includes all 22 episodes of the fifth season. Guest stars include Tom Selleck, Ed Harris, John Pleshette, and Harold Gould. • GUNSMOKE TV CAST and DETAILS Premiered
GUNSMOKE TV CAST AND DETAILS Premiered: September 10, 1955, on CBS Rating: TV-PG Premise: This landmark adult Western centered on Marshal Matt Dillon of Dodge City. John Wayne turned down the lead, suggesting James Arness (who remained for its entire run). Originating on radio (with William Conrad as Dillon), it moved to TV in September 1955. Its popularity spawned a number of copycats, but none would enjoy the longevity (and few the consistent quality) of this classic. Airing for 20 years, it's TV's longest running prime-time drama (a record that `Law & Order' is currently chasing).
