Only by stressing the work of the Pan Icarian Broth- erhood and the Pan Icarian Foundation, will we be able to encourage our family and friends of Icarian heritage to sign up as members.

Since my last report in October, the Supreme Lodge held their meetings in Hollywood, California (Octo- ber 2009) and in Clearwater, Florida during the weekend of January 16, 2010. Included in the business agenda of our latest meeting was the im- provement of our pan-icarian.com website; the Icarian cookbook and the upcoming conventions in Detroit, 2010, and in California, 2011. Helios Chapter #19 also hosted the Icarian Youth Leader- ship Conference, which was well attended. The conference proved successful thanks to the co- chairs, Diana Plutis and Stephanie Tseperkas along with national youth leadership chair, Cathy Pandeladis.

By mid November, I was able to visit twenty (20) of our twenty-seven (27) chapters. The remaining seven (7) should be visited in the next several months. I ask that the chapters continue to work with their liaison officer of the Supreme Lodge in order to keep your members up to date with the latest Icarian news.

HOSTED BY

CHAPTER #19 HELIOS CLEARWATER, FLORIDA

PAN ICARIAN BROTHERHOOD OF AMERICA “ICAROS” YOUTH COMMITTEE MEETING REPORT The 6th annual youth leadership conference was held January 15-17th in Clearwater, Florida. The weekend was attended by youth from various chapters throughout the Brotherhood. I would like to thank Chapter Helios for their hospitality and especially Diana Plutis and Stephanie Tseperkas for planning the weekend. Among items discussed were developing and producing a puzzle of Ikaria to sell. Proceeds would be used to help fund the youth conference in the future. We hope to have this ready to go at the Detroit convention. We also discussed ways to increase communication and involve- ment and other fund raising ideas. Suggestions were made to not have the youth confer- ence and convention in the same year in the same city, to have the chapter send different delegates each year and to have people adhere to the deadlines which will make it easier for the host chapter to plan the weekend. We are looking for a chapter to host next years event. If a chapter is interested please let us know at the convention. The weekend started off on Friday night with the delegate arrivals and a meet and greet at the Wave nightclub (picutred right). The next morning, we enjoyed an Ikarian cooking demonstration by Nick Plutis and Tom Tsakalos with help from Pete Gemelas followed by some lively rounds of Ikarian Jeopardy. We ended the weekend attending Chapter Helios' dinner dance where we danced to the violi of Peter Karnavas until 2 am. We will be meeting again in Detroit at the convention and all youth ages 18-30 are welcome to attend. Respectfully submitted, Cathy Pandeladis, Youth Chairperson All delegates were asked to write an written piece on the importance of the 2012 celebration. See pg 66 for some of the youth delegate submissions. Page 14 Ikapia Magazine IKARIAN YOUTH PAGES

sPANOS/aRETI DETROIT #9 Greetings to everyone from the members of the Detroit chapter, We would like to wish all our Ikarian families a happy and prosperous New Year. The year 2010 is here, and we have been hard at work planning the convention. Just as we have left the “aughts” and have entered the teens, the convention will be here sooner than you might think. We can’t wait to see everyone during Labor Day weekend.

Our main event over the holidays was a party for the children with a surprise guest. He was dressed all in red

fur and the beard on his chin was as white as the snow. He had a nose like a cherry and a broad face that had an uncanny resemblance to John Manolis. He had some great gifts for the children who had a wonderful time. Thank you Maria Tsalis for all your hard work planning and executing this party year after year. You always do an amazing job.

May his memory be their thoughts, “how eternal. can we help those left behind?” Thus came the idea of creating a Foundation to act as the beneficial arm to the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood and its members. Christopher Passodelis took up the task of investigating how to create this entity. At the same time, he, along with PSP Christ Aivaliotis and PSP George L. Vassilaros, worked to convince the Brotherhood of the benefits of establishing a Foundation. In the summer of 1964, Christopher Passodelis, along = with a contingent from Pittsburgh, traveled to New York, which was the location of the Brotherhood’s national headquarters at the time, in order to finalize the creation of a Foundation. There was much resistance and contro- versy, but thanks to Christopher Passodelis’ power of persuasion, those in opposition were won over and the trip to New York proved successful in putting the finish- ing touches on establishing a Foundation. In September 1965, the Charter was signed by Christo- pher Passodelis, PSP Christ Aivaliotis, and PSP George L. Vassilaros, and the Pan-Icarian Foundation was formed. Christopher Passodelis served as the founding chair of the Pan-Icarian Foundation from 1965-1975. During that time, he and PSP Gus Cherouvis were personally in- volved in making arrangements with hospitals and doctors across the country for the care of patients that the Foundation brought to the United States for treatment. They worked diligently to bring these patients the best possible treatment available.

We were just a tiny ship in the turbulent and stormy seas……yet we stayed afloat through one storm after another. It is almost as if god Hrisoula Mavrophilipos himself was testing us to see if we were worthy of the gift we had been given. I like to think that we passed with flying colors. Our island, bruised and battered from the years, still bears the scars of Italian occupation and Com- munist influence. But what has not killed us has only made us stronger. We are the children and the grandchildren of those great souls who fought so that we could have a place to call home. They gave up everything so that we can have something. As a testament to their sacrifices and hardships we remain to carry on their traditions that they carried with them. The same traditions that they held under Turkish rule. The same traditions that they carried across battlefields in war. The same traditions that were carried while taking refuge in Africa. The same traditions that we carried across the seas to America. Those same traditions that we enjoy today. 2012 is a celebration of our hard earned freedom. To many, freedom is a concept but to us, freedom is a tangible thing. This rock we call Ikaria, is our freedom. It is our home. It is a symbol of what our ancestors went through. Out of respect to them, I raise my glass in 2012 and I toast to the one and the only Ikaria. 100 years may seem like a long time, but to me, it is a hell of a good start.
