    Abstracts ASCS 37 Drunk with Blood: The Role of Platonic Baccheia in Lucan and Statius Eva Anagnostou-Laoutides Monash University [email protected] This paper argues that Lucan and Statius employed the motif of getting drunk with blood influenced by Plato’s use of inebriation as a means of transcending reason and transforming one’s consciousness. In his Dialogues Plato notably presents Socrates’ philosophic frenzy as Dionysian inebriation (Symp. 218b; cf. Phdr. 249e). In their epics, lamenting the disastrous Roman civil wars, Lucan and Statius employ drunkenness as a metaphor for political ambition, describing their protagonists as fighting in a Bacchic arena, like wild animals getting drunk with blood. The paper starts with the popularity of Plato and Platonist authors, such as Plutarch, under the Roman Empire when withstanding tyranny and dying virtuously became anew a topic of philosophical debate (Roskam 2002; Desmond 2011: 61-8). Lucan and Statius’ familiarity with the Platonic corpus (Tracy 2011: 10) further implies that both authors appreciated the similarities between Plato’s politically volatile period and the reign of Nero who led to Lucan’s premature death. Yet, death offers according to Plato, an ideal situation where, devoid of our bodily substance, we are urged to think about virtue (Resp. 3.386b-10.610a-b; 611d-c). Statius explores this idea when relating the adventures of Amphiaraus, Apollo’s priest, in Thebaid, bk8: lured by a false ideal of manhood Amphiaraus, now a devotee of Bacchus, kills many before being transported to the Underworld alive.     Divine Riddles: A Sourcebook for Greek and Roman Mythology March, 2014 E. Edward Garvin, Editor What follows is a collection of excerpts from Greek literary sources in translation. The intent is to give students an overview of Greek mythology as expressed by the Greeks themselves. But any such collection is inherently flawed: the process of selection and abridgement produces a falsehood because both the narrative and meta-narrative are destroyed when the continuity of the composition is interrupted. Nevertheless, this seems the most expedient way to expose students to a wide range of primary source information. I have tried to keep my voice out of it as much as possible and will intervene as editor (in this Times New Roman font) only to give background or exegesis to the text. All of the texts in Goudy Old Style are excerpts from Greek or Latin texts (primary sources) that have been translated into English. Ancient Texts In the field of Classics, we refer to texts by Author, name of the book, book number, chapter number and line number.1 Every text, regardless of language, uses the same numbering system. Homer’s Iliad, for example, is divided into 24 books and the lines in each book are numbered. Hesiod’s Theogony is much shorter so no book divisions are necessary but the lines are numbered. Below is an example from Homer’s Iliad, Book One, showing the English translation on the left and the Greek original on the right. When citing this text we might say that Achilles is first mentioned by Homer in Iliad 1.7 (i.7 is also acceptable).

After Charon and his boat, he tells him: μετὰ τοῦτ’ ὄφεις καὶ θηρί’ ὄψει μυρία / δεινότατα. After this you will see snakes and most terrible beasts in myriads. Aristophanes Frogs 142-3 The ‘myriads’, whilst grammatically associated in the first instance with the ‘most terrible beasts,’ is presumably to be read with the ‘snakes’ too. A hundred of these snakes at any rate can be accounted for in the form of the ‘hundred-headed’ (ἑκατογκέφαλος) Echidna, the ‘Viper’, which, the underworld warden and keeper of Cerberus, Aeacus, subsequently tells Heracles, will tear at his innards, in punishment for his former theft of the dog.2 In Apuleius’ tale of Cupid and Psyche, Psyche is directed by Venus to the banks of the Styx: Dextra laevaque cautibus cavatis proserpunt ecce longa colla porrecti saevi dracones inconivae vigiliae luminibus addictis et in perpetuam lucem pupulis excubantibus.

    The Unity of the "Seven Against Thebes" Otis, Brooks Greek, Roman and Byzantine Studies; Fall 1960; 3, 4; ProQuest pg. 153 The Unity of the Seven Against Thebes Brooks Otis THE OBVIOUS DIFFERENCE between the first (lines 1.-(52) and last (653-1004) parts of the Seven Against Thebes has been often discussed: yet the 'unity' or 'disunity' of the play is still in doubt. Two recent writers (Kitto, Harald Patzer)1 illustrate the persisting disagreement. Kitto sees in 655f the 'sudden revelation' of the 'other side of Eteocles, his hatred of his brother, his inability and his unwillingness to control his mood and fatalistic leap upon his doom.' Patzer sees in the same lines Eteocles' new understanding of what the gods ordain: the duel with Polynices, impious as in one sense it may be, is yet divinely decreed; he now sees he cannot evade it. Both reject the older communis opinio! (Wilamowitz, Mazon, Snell, Pohlenz, Schmid, Murray, Meautis) that interprets 653-719 as Eteocles' own fre~ decision to save the city and/or preserve his soldier's honor. In this article I want, first, to outline the present situation of criticism or scholarship on the play and to suggest the lines along which, in my view, a sane interpretation of its 'unity' is now pos­ sible.   • Continuation and Consistency in Pindar's Eighth Pythian
    Continuation and Consistency in Pindar’s Eighth Pythian Ode Two of the most vexing passages in the Pindaric corpus occur, one after another, in lines 55-69 of the Eighth Pythian Ode. The first difficulty lies in the conclusion to the ode’s central mythical exemplum (55-60), in which the poetic speaker describes an encounter with the hero Alcman during a journey to Delphi. The second involves the correct reading and interpretation of a prayer to Apollo: ὦναξ, ἑκόντι δ’ εὔχομαι νόῳ || κατά τιν’ ἁρμονίαν βλέπειν | ἀμφ’ ἕκαστον, ὅσα νέομαι (67-69). In this talk, I will offer a new solution to these interpretative cruces based on an analysis of the ode’s central themes of continuation and consistency. Scholarly confusion has surrounded the passages in question from the time of the scholiasts, who already demonstrate the same preoccupations as most modern scholars, particularly in regard to the meeting of the poet (or Aeginetan chorus, or victor) with Alcman (or Amphiaraus). While many have assumed that Pindar refers to a shrine of Alcman in or near Thebes (e.g. Gildersleeve 1885), more recent scholarship has tended to obscure the issue. Lefkowitz argues that the location of Alcman’s shrine is deliberately vague, and that γείτων and κτεάνων φύλαξ ἐμῶν (58) indicate only the friendliness of the encounter (1977). Hubbard, meanwhile, argues that the lines do not refer to Alcman at all, but rather to Amphiaraus and his Theban shrine (1993). Van ’t Wout combines the two arguments with the novel suggestion that Pindar describes a vision of Alcman experienced near Amphiaraus’ shrine (2006).
