Decade of Denison What a fantas c night we had celebra ng the first decade of Denison College on 4th August! The Kelso High Campus Hall was packed and guests enjoyed performances from Cirkus Surreal, and Swing Factor, along with the combined Denison College Concert Band and Dance Troupe.
Catering was prepared by the Hospitality classes from both campuses and served by members of the student leadership teams.
Past students and staff members, including Nick Williams (Kelso HS Captain 2006), Jim Browning (College Project Officer and Head Teacher at both campuses) and Kathleen Compton (founda on College Principal) gave insights into the establishment of the college and commemora ve plaques and trees were presented to the campus principals as a memento of the occasion. Future Direc ons This annual event for our Year 10 students and parents is now all but over. The selec ons and interviews have been completed and we are now in the process of finalising our subjects for Year 11 2018. We will be running over 40 courses across the college and 26 of these will be running on our shared lines.
Some mes a school cannot run courses that students might be very interested in because there are not enough students to form a class or because the school doesn’t have a qualified teacher. Our shared lines allow the campuses to run courses that would otherwise not be able to run and give students greater choice and a greater chance of ge ng the subjects that are high priority for them.
This year, for the first me, we asked all Year 10 students at both campuses to complete their subject choices online using webchoices. This enabled us to consider the preferences for every student as part of the en re college. This resulted in a more streamlined opera on and has reduced the number of issues in giving students their preferences.
Where some students did encounter some difficul es with subject choice, the parent interviews that we held in Week 5 were invaluable in finding the best solu on.
I would like to thank the many parents who made the me available to come into the campus and meet with staff. You contribu on has made our work much easier, and has helped us to get the best result for your children.
Eisteddfod Success Following the success of the Decade of Denison celebra ons earlier this term, it was great to see the Denison College Concert Band and Dance Troupe do so well in the recent Bathurst Eisteddfod. The College Concert Band won first place in the Secondary Schools Concert Band sec on. The College Dance Ensemble came third in the Secondary Schools dance groups sec on in both Orange and Bathurst Eisteddfods.
The Year 11 shared class in Dance taught at Kelso HC (has 5 Bathurst HC students in it) came first in the Orange Eisteddfod. Kelso HC groups took out second and also gained two Highly Commended. The Bathurst High Senior Ensemble was first in the Bathurst Eisteddfod, the Kelso High Company was second, and Bathurst High juniors were Highly Commended. Well done to all!

Congratula ons to Ben Tullier and Callum Colwell who recently represented Western Region at the State Tennis Championships held in Bathurst. There are ten regions that compete in these championships and each team is made up of a minimum of 8 players. Each match consists of 4 doubles and 8 singles sets.
The boys were joined by other Western Region players from Parkes, Orange, Dubbo and Cowra. Apart from the tennis, the boys enjoyed a Mayor’s recep on at the Na onal Motor Racing Museum, a team dinner and an a ernoon of ten pin bowling.
Our team competed against South Coast, Sydney East, Hunter and North West. Our best results were taking 3 sets off last year’s champions (Sydney East) and also 3 sets off North West. We then played against Riverina in a 9th/10th playoff. All sets were very compe ve but Riverina eventually proved too strong and won 9 sets to 3. Sydney North beat North Coast in the final.
This was Callum Colwell’s first me represen ng Western Region and this level of Tennis is fantas c for the development of his game. Ben Tullier is finishing school this year and he was presented with a NSW CHS cer fi‐ cate, recognising his 3 years of service to Western Region. Best wishes for the future Ben!

Under 15 boys basketball team travelled to West Wyalong to play in the western regions finals. Our very early start meant the trip over was pre y much traffic free. The first game started at 9am against West Wyalong’s second team as the Boorowa team we were supposed to play forfeited. The game started closely with the West Wyalong boys scoring some miraculous hook shots from under the ring. A er a steady start, we were up by 12 points in the first quarter. Jed Powell and Jaylen Boer‐Ross led the way with some excellent fast break lay ups. Angus McIntyre was performing well on both the offense and defence, ge ng many intercepts and rebounds. Liam Kirkland and Cooper Traves were intense in defending the guards for West Wyalong. The double Jackson T’s made light work of scoring within the key, with some fantas c passes by Jackson Tuynman to Jacob Molken n who was cu ng to the key with intensity and purpose! Sco Brown was excellent in defence and rebounding. Lewis Dunshea improved his posi onal play significantly throughout the game. The second game we played was against Gilgandra. This game started again as a close encounter un l we began to make good decisions in rela on to fast break passes. Sco Brown was excellent in both a ack and defence and was utmost unstoppable in a ack. Jed Powell con nued to assist others with his outstanding help defence and worked relessly to make himself available to receive the ball. Jacob Molken n con nued to a ack the basket and claimed a large share of the offensive rebounds. Liam Kirkland led the team with intensity defensively and consequently gave himself plenty of opportuni es to score. Jaylen Boer‐Ross and Cooper Traves worked well together to put pressure on the ball carriers from Gilgandra. Lewis Dunshea con nued to work hard defensively and posi oned himself more effec vely in a ack. The boys should be congratulated on their efforts and improvements, we are now in the top 32 in the state. We are yet to receive informa on about our next game. Well done! As always the boys were a credit to themselves and our school!

The Boys Tennis Team recently competed in the State Finals at Nelson Bay. The finals involve the final ten teams in the state‐wide Stan Jones Knockout. To qualify for these finals is a great achievement and the boy’s team consists of Ben Tullier, Jacob Bicanic, Jake Sheader and Callum Colwell. Each match consists of 8 sets (4 doubles and 4 singles) and each team was the winner of their region. In our first match we played Albury High School (Riverina Region) and a er taking a lead in the doubles, Albury were able to come back and win narrowly 5 sets to 3. Our second match was against Figtree High School (South Coast) and again all sets were ghtly contested. Figtree were able to win the last doubles in a e‐break to win 5 sets to 3. Day two saw finals and playoff matches completed and we played against Colo High School (Sydney West) in a 9th/10th playoff.
