St. ’s Cathedral Basilica Monday, January 25, 2021

Main Celebrant His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Collins Archbishop of Toronto His Excellency The Most Reverend Ivan Camilleri The Coat of Arms of The Most Reverend Ivan Camilleri

EXPLANATION

The shield is split into two halves with a white and red background. These colours represent Bishop Camilleri's Maltese origin, Canada and the Archdiocese of Toronto. The main cross separating the shield into four quadrants is the St. Edward the Confessor cross with the colours symbolizing joy (green) and faith (gold). The meaning of the symbols on the shield represent that we can only truly serve joyfully when we recognize God's goodness (the star) with willing obedience and serenity of mind (the feathers). Our service has to be zealous (the torches) and strengthened by vigilance to the spiritual and sacramental life (the chalice).

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Isaiah 61.1-3 A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion— to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory. The word of the Lord. All reply: Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM R. Here I am Lord, I come to do your will.

SECOND READING .1-22

A reading from the . Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Now as Saul was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” Saul asked, “Who are you, Lord?” The reply came, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But get up and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” The men who were travelling with Saul stood speechless because they heard the voice but saw no one. Saul got up from the ground and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. For three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank. Now there was a in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” He answered, “Here I am, Lord.” The Lord said to him, “Get up and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul. At this moment he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.” But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem; and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke your name.” But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go, for he is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and kings and before the people of Israel; I myself will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.” So Ananias went and entered the house. He laid his hands on Saul and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on your way here, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” And immediately something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and his sight was restored. Then he got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. For several days Saul was with the disciples in Damascus, and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying “Jesus is the Son of God.” All who heard Saul were amazed and said, “Is not this the man who made havoc in Jerusalem among those who invoked this name? And has he not come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?” Saul became increasingly more powerful and confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus was the Messiah. The word of the Lord. All reply: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia I have chosen you from the world, says the Lord, to go and bear fruit that will last.

GOSPEL Mark 16.15-18

Fr. Curtis: The Lord be with you. All reply: And with your spirit. Fr. Curtis: A reading from the holy gospel according to Mark. All reply Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus said to the Eleven, “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. The one who believes and is baptized will be saved; but the one who does not believe will be condemned. “And these signs will accompany those who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” The gospel of the Lord. All reply: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

RITE OF ORDINATION The Rite of Ordination begins by invoking the Holy Spirit. The grace of the Holy Spirit is given to Bishops so that they “take the place of Christ himself, teacher, shepherd, and priest, and act as his representative” (Catechism of the 1558). Together as a congregation we join in prayer for Bishop-elect Ivan and for other Bishops “Veni Creator Spiritus,” which means “Come, Holy Spirit, Creator.” A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who recite or sing this prayer.

Veni, Creator Spiritus:

The Presentation of the Elect Fr. Edward Curtis, on behalf of all presbyters, presents Bishop-elect Ivan Camilleri to the Archbishop of Toronto, Cardinal Thomas Collins and requests his Ordination to the Episcopal order.

Fr. Curtis: Most Reverend Father, the Church of Toronto, our Mother, asks you to ordain the Priest Ivan Camilleri to the responsibility of the Episcopate.

Cardinal: Have you a mandate from the Apostolic See?

Fr. Curtis: We have.

Cardinal: Let it be read.

Msgr. Matjaž Roter, First Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature reads the document. “In our day, the lawful ordination of a bishop requires a special intervention of the Bishop of Rome, because he is the supreme visible bond of the communion of the particular Churches in the one Church and the guarantor of their freedom” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1559). When the reading is finished, all give their assent to the election of the Bishop, saying: Thanks be to God.

Homily The Promise of the Elect “Bishops, as successors of the apostles, receive from the Lord, to whom was given all power in heaven and on earth, the mission to teach all nations and to preach the Gospel to every creature, so that all men may attain to salvation by faith, baptism and the fulfilment of the commandments. To fulfill this mission, Christ the Lord promised the Holy Spirit to the Apostles, and on day sent the Spirit from heaven, by whose power they would be witnesses to Him before the nations and peoples and kings even to the ends of the earth. And that duty, which the Lord committed to the shepherds of His people, is a true service, which in sacred literature is significantly called "diakonia" or ministry.” (Lumen Gentium 24) In the presence of those in the Cathedral and of those joining via livestream throughout the Archdiocese of Toronto, Cardinal Collins will ask the Bishop-elect to state his resolve to uphold the faith and to discharge his duty.

Cardinal: The ancient rule of the holy Fathers decrees that the one to be ordained Bishop should be questioned in the presence of the people concerning his resolve to guard the faith and to discharge this office. Therefore, dear brother, do you resolve to carry out until death with the grace of the Holy Spirit the office entrusted to us by the Apostles and to be passed on to you through the laying on of our hands?

Bishop-elect: I do.

Cardinal: Do you resolve to proclaim the Gospel of Christ faithfully and unfailingly?

Bishop-elect: I do.

Cardinal: Do you resolve to guard the deposit of faith pure and entire according to the tradition preserved always and everywhere in the Church from the time of the Apostles?

Bishop-elect: I do.

Cardinal: Do you resolve to build up the Body of Christ, his Church, and to remain in her unity, with the Order of Bishops, under the authority of the successor of the blessed Apostle Peter?

Bishop-elect: I do.

Cardinal: Do you resolve to render obedience faithfully to the successor of the blessed Apostle Peter?

Bishop-elect: I do.

Cardinal: Do you resolve, as a devoted father, to encourage the holy People of God and to guide them in the way of salvation together with the Priests and Deacons, your fellow ministers?

Bishop-elect: I do.

Cardinal: Do you resolve, for the sake of the Lord’s name, to show yourself welcoming and merciful to the poor, to strangers, and to all those in need?

Bishop-elect: I do.

Cardinal: Do you resolve, as a good shepherd, to seek out the sheep who stray and to gather them into the Lord’s fold?

Bishop-elect: I do.

Cardinal: Do you resolve to pray without ceasing to almighty God for his holy people and to carry out the office of High Priest without reproach?

Bishop-elect: I do, with the help of God.

Cardinal: May God who has begun the good work in you bring it to fulfillment.

The Litany of Supplication Bishop-Elect Ivan will prostrate himself as the congregation prays the Litany of the Supplication on his behalf. Prostration, is an ancient posture in which a person lays face down before God. This posture is symbolic of the candidate’s total dedication of his life to God and His Church as well as supplication in which the candidate asks God for the grace to live out his life for God and for His Church. Cantor: Lord, have mercy, All: R. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy, R. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy, R. Lord, have mercy. Holy Mary, Mother of God, R. Pray for us. Cardinal: Graciously hear our petitions, O Lord, and as you raise the horn of priestly grace over this your servant, pour out upon him the power of your blessing.

All reply: Amen. The Laying on of Hands The grace of the Holy Spirit is given to the Bishop-elect through the imposition of hands and through the prayer of consecration so that “a sacred character is impressed in such wise that bishops, in an eminent and visible manner, take the place of Christ himself, teacher, shepherd, and priest, and act as his representative (1558 Catechism of the Catholic Church). After the Bishops have laid their hands on the Bishop-elect, Cardinal Collins will say the Prayer of Ordination. All other bishops will join for the words of Consecration. Prayer of Ordination God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Father of mercies and God of all consolation, who dwell on high and look upon the lowly, who know all things before they come to be: it is you who established order in your Church through your gracious word, who from the beginning predestined a righteous people born of Abraham, who instituted rulers and priests and did not leave your sanctuary without ministry, who from the beginning of the world have been pleased to be glorified in those you have chosen: The following part of the prayer is recited in a low voice by all the consecrating bishops, with hands joined: Now pour forth upon this chosen one the power that is from you, the governing Spirit, whom you gave to your beloved Son Jesus Christ and whom he gave to the holy Apostles, who established the Church in each place as your sanctuary, to the glory and unfailing praise of your name. Then the principal consecrator continues alone. Grant, O Father, knower of all hearts, that this your servant whom you have chosen for the Episcopate may nourish your holy flock and may without reproach exercise before you the High Priesthood, serving you night and day; that he may unceasingly cause your face to shine upon us and offer the gifts of your holy Church. Grant that by the strength of the Spirit of the High Priesthood he may have authority to forgive sins according to your command; that he may apportion offices according to your precept and loosen every bond according to the authority you gave the Apostles; may he be pleasing to you in meekness and purity of heart, offering a sweet fragrance to you through your Son Jesus Christ, through whom glory and power and honour are yours, with the Holy Spirit in the holy Church both now and for ever and ever.

All reply: Amen.

The Anointing of the Head Sacred Chrism in an ordination symbolizes Christ the High Priest. The head of the new bishop is anointed with sacred chrism, reminding him that he sacramentally participates in the ministry of Christ. Cardinal: May God, who has made you a sharer in the High Priesthood of Christ, himself pour out upon you the oil of mystical anointing and make you fruitful with an abundance of spiritual blessing.

Handing On of the Book of “Among the principal offices of Bishops the preaching of the Gospel is preeminent, for Bishops are heralds of the faith, who lead new disciples to Christ, and are authentic teachers, who proclaim to the people entrusted to them the faith that is to be believed and that is to direct their conduct.” (Ordination of a Bishop, of Priests, and of Deacons) The Book of the Gospels is presented as a symbol of the bishop’s ministry of preaching and teaching.

Cardinal: Receive the Gospel, and preach the word of God with all patience and sound teaching.

Investiture with Ring, Mitre and Crosier The ring symbolizes the Bishop’s relationship with the Church who is his Bride. This relationship binds the Bishop to the diocese entrusted to his care. Cardinal Collins proceeds to place the ring on the new Bishop’s finger.

Cardinal: Receive this ring, the seal of fidelity: and adorned with undefiled faith, preserve unblemished the Bride of God, the holy Church.

During liturgies, the Bishop wears a mitre to remind him of his eternal pursuit for holiness. Cardinal Collins places the mitre on the newly ordained Bishop, saying: Cardinal: Receive the mitre, and let the splendor of holiness shine in you, so that when the chief Shepherd appears you may merit to receive an unfading crown of glory.

The crosier symbolizes the Bishops role as a Good Shepherd. It also reminds the bishop that Jesus is the Good Shepherd who he is to imitate at all times. Cardinal Collins presents the crosier to the newly ordained Bishop, saying: Cardinal: Receive the crosier, the sign of the pastoral office, and keep watch over the whole flock in which the Holy Spirit has placed you as Bishop to govern the Church of God.

Fraternal Sign of Peace A fraternal gesture of peace is extended to the new bishop by Cardinal Collins.

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST “The bishop is to be considered as the high priest of his flock, from whom the life in Christ of his faithful is in some way derived and dependent. Therefore all should hold in great esteem the liturgical life of the diocese centered around the bishop, especially in his cathedral church; they must be convinced that the pre-eminent manifestation of the Church consists in the full active participation of all God's holy people in these liturgical celebrations, especially in the same eucharist, in a single prayer, at one altar, at which there presides the bishop surrounded by his college of priests and by his ministers.”(Sacrosanctum Concilium no. 41)
