Chapter 40. Appalachian Planation Surfaces
Chapter 40 Appalachian Planation Surfaces The Appalachian region not only includes the mountains, but also the surrounding provinces. During the erosion episode (see Chapter 8 and Appendix 4), rocks of the Appalachians were sometimes planed into a flat or nearly flat planation surface, especially on the provinces east and west of the Blue Ridge Mountains (Figure 40.1). But planation surfaces are also found in the Appalachian Mountains, mainly on the mountaintops. Figure 40.1. Due to their rolling and dissected morphology, the Appalachian provinces are rarely called planation surfaces, but they would mostly be erosion surfaces. I will continue to use the more descriptive term, planation surface, with the understanding that many of these are erosion surfaces. The Appalachian provinces exhibit three possible planation surfaces, from east to west, they include: (1) the Piedmont Province, (2) the accordant mountaintops of the Valley and Ridge Province (part of the Appalachian Mountains), and (3) the Appalachian Plateau which is divided into the Allegheny Plateau in the north and the Cumberland Plateau in the south. I also will include the Interior Low Plateaus Province to the west of the Appalachian Plateau. Many articles have been published about the Appalachian planation surface. Their origin is controversial among secular geologists, but they can readily be explained by the runoff of the global Genesis Flood. Figure 40.2. The Piedmont Planation Surface The Piedmont Province begins just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains from the Hudson River in the north to Alabama in the south. -

United States Department ofthe Interior FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE Texas Chenier Plain NWR Complex June 15, 2017 Dear Reviewer: This is to provide notification of availability of a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Draft Environmental Assessment for review and comment. The Draft Environmental Assessment addresses the issuance of an Operational Permit by the USFWS for two proposed oil and natural gas drilling and production project on the Mcfaddin National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) in Jefferson County, Texas. The project has been proposed by OLEUM Exploration, LLC ofBrodheadsville, Pennsylvania. The company possesses valid leases to explore and/or develop oil and gas reserves underlying the refuge from the rightful mineral owners. The purpose for the proposed Federal action is to insure that mineral rights holders have reasonable access to develop their non-Federal oil and gas interests and minimize impacts to refuge resources to the extent practicable under the USFWS's 50 CFR Part 29, Subpart D regulations for managing non-Federal oil and gas on USFWS administered lands and waters. Issuance ofthe Operations Permit in the end should protect the human environment in such a way as to further the Refuge's efforts to achieve its established purposes, and the general resource conservation mission ofthe USFWS. CHAPTER 7 JURISDICTIONS CARVED FROM TERRITORY SOUTH OF THE RIVER OHIO Territory South of the River Ohio - Tennessee In 1790 the State of North Carolina ceded to the United States the area referred to as "a certain district of western territory." Known initially as "the Territory of the United States, south of the river Ohio," it had substantially the same boundaries as the present state of Tennessee. The North Carolina Deed of Cession provided: ... the territory so ceded shall be laid out and formed into a State or States containing a suitable extent of territory; the Inhabitants of which shall enjoy all the privileges, benefits and advantages set forth in the Ordinance of the late Congress for the Government of the Western territory of the United States ... .1 Eighthly, That the laws in force and use in the State of North Carolina at the time of passing this act shall be and continue in full force within the territory hereby ceded, until the same shall be repealed, or otherwise altered by the Legislative authority or the said territory ....2 This stipulation, among the others set out in the Deed of Cession, was accepted by Congress 3 and incorporated by reference in "An Act for the Government of the Territory of the United States, south of the river Ohio," approved May 26, 1790. 4 Thus from the moment of its organization, "the territory . south of the river Ohio" was provided with a complete body of 1. Description of a Land Classification System and Its Application to the Management of Tennessee’S State Forests
DESCRIPTION OF A LAND CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM AND ITS APPLICATION TO THE MANAGEMENT OF TENNESSEE’S STATE FORESTS Glendon W. Smalley, S. David Todd, and K. Ward Tarkington III1 Abstract—The Tennessee Division of Forestry has adopted a land classification system developed by the senior author as the basic theme of information for the management of its 15 state forests (162,371 acres) with at least 1 in each of 8 physio- graphic provinces. This paper summarizes the application of the system to six forests on the Cumberland Plateau. Landtypes are the most detailed level in the hierarchical system and represent distinct units of the landscape (mapped at a scale of 1:24,000) as defined by physiography, climate, geology, soils, topography, and vegetation. Each of the 39 landtypes are described in terms of geographic setting, dominant soils, parent material, depth to bedrock, soil texture, soil drainage, relative soil water supply, relative fertility, and forest type. Additional information includes species suitable, site productivity, and operability for management activities. The maps aid the delineation of stands, streamside management zones, and “conservation” and other special use areas; the location of rare, threaten and endangered (RTE) species; the design of harvests; and the modeling of future forest conditions. The landtypes are an integral element in modeling wildlife habitat, in siting game food plots, and planning other wildlife management activities, particularly on forests that are dual wildlife and forest management areas. The maps are excellent training devices and extremely useful in explaining management plans to legislators and the public.
