www.oneinamillion.org.uk/freeschool COMPASSION HONESTY INTEGRITY EXCELLENCE DEAR PROSPECTIVE APPLICANT

We are delighted that you have shown an interest in the post of Principal at our unique and popular Free School. The resignation of our current Principal to pursue a career outside education has created an opportunity for inspiring and creative leader to join our team. Here is some very important background information as to who we are and our journey, to help you decide whether to submit an application.

ABOUT ONE IN A MILLION One In A Million (OIAM) was co-founded by Matthew Band and Wayne Jacobs in 2005 with a mission to make a difference to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in , breaking the cycle of deprivation through sports, arts and enterprise programmes. Our name reflects our values: every child is valued and unique.

OIAM comprises outstanding educationalists, teachers, business experts and sports professionals, all of whom are committed to raising educational standards within the of Bradford. Many of the young people we support in our schools and in our community programmes live in wards in Bradford that are among the top 1% of the most disadvantaged communities in the country. Every week, One In A Million delivers community programmes for over 1,500 children and young people, and has made a significant contribution to Children’s Services and the Third Sector within Bradford.

Our Free School opened in September 2013 and is part of the wider One In A Million family whose charitable objectives are achieved through six main activity areas: Community, Positive Lifestyle, Corporate Events and Sponsorship, our Alternative Provision, a partnership with Bradford Youth Offending Team and of course, our Free School. A S N R C A E T S OUR VALUES All staff and volunteers within the One In A Million family nurture and develop a deep sense of self-worth, confidence and ambition in all our students. We acknowledge and promote young people as being ‘one in a million’. Our core values of compassion, honesty, integrity and excellence are at the heart of all we do. These values are our DNA and inform the behaviours of all staff and volunteers within our schools and the Charity. Our recent Ofsted report confirmed that our Core values “underpin the relationships between adults and students” and “the school’s strong sense of core values underpins a culture of equal opportunities, ensuring that all students have access to the full range of subjects and activities”.

OUR VISION The vision for our Academy Trust has been developed as a result of the OIAM Charity’s commitment to community engagement. We wish to establish outstanding schools that offer a unique learning experience that is themed across sport, the arts and enterprise and framed around a connected and creative approach to learning. We believe our unique learning offer will enhance the life chances of all our students, ensuring they can utilise their skills and talents to better themselves and their communities. When students leave a One In A Million School, they will be active participants in their community, acting as role models and using their talents and skills to engage others in positive community activities and programmes. Our students will be confident and have a level of self-belief and self-discipline that enables them to participate in professional and leisure based activities through work and/or volunteering. Our students will be proud of the communities in which they learn and live. COMPASSION HONESTY INTEGRITY EXCELLENCE OUR SCHOOL We are a small school. The OIAM Free School opened in September 2013 with 60 students in Year 7 and each year our student population grows. We will meet our ceiling of 420 students in 2019, including a sixth form. Each year we are oversubscribed for places, but we will remain a small school. Relationships are key to our offer and we will always adopt a family approach so that students feel valued and connected. As such we have small classes with every student supported by a Learning Coach and every teacher knowing every student.

The student is at the heart of everything we do. I know every school claims this, but it is our passion to make sure we develop our students holistically and how they learn, before mapping out what they need to learn. We then ensure we tackle the issues that are common across Bradford. We know that many Bradford students lack self-belief, a work ethic and resilience - three key ingredients they will need for future success. We address this by creating a culture of aspiration. We believe in our students and constantly remind them that whatever their starting point, they can get better. Our mantra for our young people is: ‘growth (I can get better) through hard work and resilience’. We also address the development of resilience through the ‘The Leader In Me’ programme, which incorporates Steven Covey’s 7-Habits of Highly Effective People into our daily life. Finally, our community partners and ambassadors, drawn from the world of sports, arts and enterprise, visit and support the school, providing inspirational role models for our students.

We are innovative. You will find we do some things slightly differently to other schools. Our ‘Framework for Teaching and Learning’ supports our teachers to see their skills developing from ‘New Practitioner’ to ‘Developing Practitioner’ to ‘Competent Practitioner’ and ultimately a ‘Teacher Tutor’ (able to support the development of other teachers). In line with our core value of compassion, no one is labelled ‘Inadequate’ or ‘Outstanding’. Sports, arts and enterprise are embedded in all areas of our curriculum. Our Connected Curriculum at Key Stage 3 involves all our staff working collaboratively to shape truly connected, purposeful and relevant learning experiences. Enrichment opportunities are available to our students not only within the school, but also through the wider OIAM community programmes.

GOVERNANCE: our recent Ofsted report stated that ‘Governance is a considerable strength of the school’. The Academy Trust retains ownership of the vision of the school and ensures it is upheld through a set of Key Performance Indicators, which are monitored by the Governing Body. The Principal is accountable to the Governing Body and Director of Education.

Our new Principal will be an inspirational and innovative leader who will embrace our core values and lead these by example. They will further develop our unique vision within the ‘Hub and Spoke’ and ‘Wheel of Hope’ models. Our new Principal will have a passion for teaching and learning and significant experience of working in a vibrant, multi-cultural environment. They will be able to support our newly established leadership team in order for us to become an outstanding school in the near future.

You’ll find more about our school and charity in the pages that follow; on our website (www.oneinamillion.org.uk ) and YouTube channel (click this link) ; as well as the other supporting literature we have provided. If you are excited by the prospect of leading such a unique, innovative and dynamic school then please first come and visit to see for yourself what makes One In A Million Free School such a special place.

Yours sincerely

4. SCHOOL INFORMATION AND KEY STATISTICS

OFSTED : OIAMFS was inspected in July 2 015, with the report published on Thursday 9th November 2 015, having previously been published on October 2 015 and then taken down from the Ofsted website.

The Key judgements were:

• Leadership and Management GOOD • Student achievement and progress GOOD • Teaching and Learning GOOD

The following category ‘behaviour and safety’ is split into two sections:

• Safety GOOD • Behaviour REQUIRES IMPROVEMENT

In 2 015, the process was that Ofsted take the lower of the two judgements to give an overall judgement of a category and therefore behaviour and safety was judged as requires improvement, as was the overall effectiveness of the school.

Despite our disappointment of the overall judgement, we press on towards our goal of becoming outstanding. The actual report is overwhelmingly positive and says a lot of good things about One in a Million Free School. Like all schools we are always striving for excellence and constantly aiming to improve. We assess ourselves honestly – its one of our values.

SCHOOL ORGANISATION

Each year group has 63 students, with 3 classes of approximately 21. Students have a core curriculum at KS3 that is inline with the National Curriculum. This year we have our year 10 students who are experiencing the first KS4 curriculum. Because of the school size there is a limited offer that has a core curriculum that allows most students to achieve the EBACC qualifications. Students can pick up other GCSEs through the enrichment programme.

The senior leadership comprises of: The Principal The Vice Principal – Jaz Qadri Achievement Director – Andy Haughey Director of Teaching and Learning – TBA Business Manager – Roxy Daniells

The tracking of teacher improvement is set within the OIAMFS Teaching Policy. Our policy recognises four stages of teacher development and colleagues are encouraged to identify their stage of development and then are judged against a set of criteria appropriate for that stage of development.
