Before coming to Bradford as a recently graduated photography student I’d led a nomadic life. I couldn’t see that pattern changing, but nearly 30 years later I’m still here.

Professionally Bradford has been a rich source of stories and photographs for me, and socially it has provided a rich tapestry of experience. I discovered it was possible to traverse the world by getting on the city circular bus.

Nineteenth Century Bradford was the woollen textiles capital of the world. The centrepiece of Victorian Bradford’s building boom was City Hall (1), with a tower modelled on a palatial 7 fortress in Florence, Italy. The extraordinary interior of the Wool Exchange (2) demonstrated the wealth and pride of those who traded beneath its high, beamed roof.

Go past the National Media Museum (3) and the Alhambra Theatre (4), dodge the fountains in City Park’s mirror pool (5) and you reach John Street Market (6). Here traditional Yorkshire 8 9 butchers and fishmongers sit alongside vegetarian noodle bars, Caribbean and African grocers, and Asian stalls piled high with cumin, coriander, and cashew nuts. My particular favourite is the homemade cheesecake from the Polish deli, or popping around the corner for drink at the continental-style Sparrow Café (7).

For those who want to travel a little further there’s that city circular bus ride, or 10 minutes on the train to the edge of town, to Saltaire (8). Saltaire once sold cloth all over the world. It’s now home to the world’s largest collection of David Hockney paintings (9). From here you can walk (or run, or cycle) along the Leeds to Liverpool Canal (10), which if you go far enough leads to the Yorkshire Dales. 10 Once I got myself under the skin of Bradford it returned the compliment. It got under my skin too. This is my Bradford, but what I love about the city is that it’s everyone else’s Bradford too.
