    The fate of the mentally ill during the Second World War (1940–1945) in Troms and Finnmark, Norway Åshild Fause Introduction Norway was occupied by Germany in 1940–1945 and from February 1942 the Government was led by Nazi German dictatorship. As a part of their withdrawal from the eastern front, th|e Germans effectuated the scorched earth strategy in October 1944, and more than 50,000 inhabitants from the county of Finnmark and from the northern part of the county of Troms were deported southwards. Among them were some mentally ill. From the early 20th century, and until 1930, the publicly supported private care system had become the most common form of mental health care in Norway (Fause 2007, 146). Private care meant to be taken care of by private people, preferably farming families. The family received public compensation for having the mentally ill living in their home. This arrangement was administered by the medical practitioners and by the municipal poor relief, under close inspection and monitoring. Alta, Hammerfest and the western part of Finnmark were the municipalities hosting most mentally ill in private family care. In Germany, more than 300,000 mentally ill were killed during the Nazi regime’s programme of killing institutionalised patients in 1939–1945 (Meyer 1988, Burleigh 1994, Browning 2005, Gittelman 2006). The reason why this could happen in Germany is found in both the eugenic movement and economic causes (Meyer 1988, Mueller and Beddies, 2006). Hospital beds were needed for wounded soldiers. With the greatest number of German soldiers deployed in the country per head of population, it became necessary to reduce the costs in both health arrangements in general and in the mental health care arrangements in Norway (Gogstad 2005, 213).

Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 54, pp. 123-129. Oslo 1974. An outline of the geology of the area between Alta and the Komagfjord tectonic window is presented. Lithologies (including a tillite) constituting an autochthonous sequence are described from an area on the north-east side of Altafjord, and from their similarity to those of formations occurring in adjacent areas a revised regional stratigraphical correlation is proposed. An occurrence of biogenic structures appears to provide confirmatory evidence for an earlier suggested correlation with Late Precambrian sequences be­ tween west and east Finnmark. D. Roberts & E. Regional setting; previous correlations Our. knowledge of the geology of the Alta district of west Finnmark owes much to the work of Holtedahl (1918, 1960) and Føyn (1964). The oldest rocks, the Raipas Group or Series (Reitan 1963a) of Precambrian (Karelian) age, are represented by a sequence of greenschist facies metasediments, metavolcanics and intrusives. Lying unconformably upon the Raipas is a quartzite formation, a thin tillite, and a mixed shale and sandstone succession. Holtedahl (1918) re­ ferred to these autochthonous post-Raipas rocks as the 'Bossekopavdelingen', but Føyn (1964) later demonstrated the presence of an angular uncon­ formity beneath the tillite and adopted this break as the border between what he termed the Bossekop Group and the overlying sediments, the Borras Group. Av teljingane før 1865 er berre ho frå i 1801 nominativ, dvs ho listar enkeltpersonar ved namn. Teljingane i 1769 og 1815-55 er numeriske, men med namnelistar i grunnlagsmateriale for nokre prestegjeld. Statistikklova i 1907 la sterke restriksjonar på bruken av nyare teljingar. Etter lov om offisiell statistikk og Statistisk Sentralbyrå (statistikklova) frå 1989 skal desse teljingane ikkje frigjevast før etter 100 år. 1910-teljinga vart difor frigjeven 1. desember 2010. Folketeljingane er avleverte til Arkivverket. Riksarkivet har originalane frå teljingane i 1769, 1801, 1815-1865, 1870, 1891, 1910, 1930, 1950, 1970 og 1980, mens statsarkiva har originalane til teljingane i 1875, 1885, 1900, 1920, 1946 og 1960 for sine distrikt. Folketeljinga 1. desember 1910 Ved kgl. Res. 23. september 1910 vart det kunngjort at det skulle haldast ”almindelig Folketælling” for å få ei detaljert oversikt over Noregs befolkning natta mellom 1. og 2. desember 1910. På kvar bustad skulle alle personar til stades førast inn i teljingslista, med særskilt merknad om dei som var mellombels til stades (på besøk osv) på teljingstidspunktet.

    Smil! Innhold: Hans Christian Søborg Design: János Kolostyák Museet har valgt å presentere en liten del av vår fotosamling under temaet smil. Et underlig tema vil kanskje noen hevde. Men smilet er et ”universelt” ansiktsuttrykk som betyr det samme på tvers av tid og rom. Likevel har det av flere grunner ikke alltid vært like naturlig å smile på fotografier som i dag: ☺ I begynnelsen av fotografiets historie ble det regnet som upassende med store smil på bilder. ☺ Lang eksponeringstid for de første typer fotografier gjorde det vanskelig for folk å holde på et naturlig smil. ☺ Folk hadde dårligere tenner på 1800-tallet enn i dag. Noen fotografer var som i dag flinkere enn andre til å få sine objekter til å smile, kanskje fordi de var spesielt godt likt eller hadde smittende godt humør. Noen ganger har mennesker evnen til å smile selv i svært vanskelige tider. På dataskjermen vil du finne digitale bilder fra vår samling av steder og personer både i og utenfor Finnmark. På veggene er utvalget begrenset til bilder tatt i Finnmark eller av finnmarkinger ute i den store verden. Flertallet er av mennesker fra Alta. 14-år gamle Elle-Susanne Eira er fotografert i Talvik i 1927. Jeg synes dette er ett av de beste smilebilder i vår samling. Bildet er tatt av den finske fotografen Samuli Paulaharju (1875-1944). Han utgav flere bøker fra sine reiser til Troms og Finnmark i 1920- og 30-årene. Han var utdannet lærer og i sitt mangfoldige virke var han særlig opptatt av barn og unge. Museiverket, Helsinki.
