Ramiro is still alive; Nahuel is dead. Both have been, obscure and simultaneously, her lovers and one made Julia pregnant. Julia is sent to a prison housing mothers and pregnant inmates. There she spends her first days absorbed and aloof. Two characters enter her life. One is Marta, a fellow inmate who has reared two children in prison and who becomes her guide and counselor; the other is Sofía, Julia’s own mother, an ambiguous character who Julia meets up with again after many years. Sofía attempts to repair the mistakes of the past; she helps her daughter, gets her a good lawyer, sends her baby clothes, and slowly reestablishes her relationship with Julia. The legal case involving the death of Nahuel, has two possible guilty parties: Julia and Ramiro, both in prison in different penitentiaries. Their testimonies are contradictory, one incriminating the other. The child is born, a baby boy whose name is Tomás. Bringing up a child in prison is difficult. -

Marc Zermati: farewell to the 'hippest man in Paris' Zermati, who has died aged 74, was an anglophile dandy whose label Skydog crashlanded rock’n’roll into conservative France Andrew Gallix Wed 17 Jun 2020 13.42 BST arc Zermati, who died of a heart attack on Saturday at the age of 74, was a true underground legend: a national treasure France had never heard of and probably did not deserve. Rock Is My Life – the title of a 2008 exhibition celebrating his career on the radical fringes of the music business – would serve as a fitting M epitaph. Skydog, which Zermati co-created with Pieter Meulenbrock in 1972, was the first modern indie label, directly inspiring the launch of Chiswick and Stiff in England – its most successful release was the Stooges’ Metallic KO in 1976. As a promoter Zermati organised the world’s first punk festival, at Mont-de-Marsan, and introduced bands such as the Clash to a French audience. His heroin addiction and wheeler-dealing landed him on the wrong side of the law, and in latter years his curmudgeonly rightwing views alienated many people. But as one of the earliest champions of punk his importance in rock history cannot be overstated; if cut, he would have bled vinyl. Zermati was born into a family of Sepharadi Jews in Algiers. Growing up against the bloody background of the war of independence, he took refuge in rock’n’roll records imported from the US, which were more readily available – as he often boasted – than in metropolitan France. Like so many other pieds-noirs (the name given to people of European origin born in Algeria under French rule) the family fled to la métropole in 1962, when the country gained independence. -

Le phé- nomène ayant principalement été raconté par les journalistes de rock, l’histo- S 3 riographie du punk y reste pauvre, manque qui traduit combien l’objet punk apparaît toujours illégitime au sein du monde académique. Qui plus est, cette histoire musicale française s’attarde en priorité sur le parcours des principaux groupes parisiens : Asphalt Jungle, Stinky Toys, Métal Urbain, Bérurier Noir... Faut-il en déduire que l’histoire du punk se résume uniquement à Paris ? Nul- lement car la province, et plus précisément la Normandie, s’est engouffrée dès 1976 dans une aventure qui perdure toujours quarante ans après. -

PUNK By Jon Savage I: INTRO I’m a street-walking cheetah with a heartfull of napalm… It starts with a feeling. I’m the runaway son of the nuclear A-bomb…. A feeling so intense and so out there that it struggles to make itself heard. I am the world’s forgotten boy… These screams of rage fall on deaf ears in the woozy hedonism of the early seventies. The singer is: too dumb, too blank, too violent. A dose of Amphetamine among the Quaaludes. He cuts himself on stage, flings himself into the audience…. Sick boy, sick boy, learning to be cruel… ..trying to get a reaction, any reaction. Anything but this boredom. Anything but this stoner ooze that avoids the issue of what it is to be young, outcast, and ready to murder a world. Is there concrete all around or is it in my head? The bloom is off youth culture as the promises of the sixties fade. The charismatic dark stars of the early seventies, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, catch this mood but by mid decade they are too successful and too old - sixties people themselves – to embody this feeling. They can write as observers but they aren’t inside it. I’m getting tired of being alone…. The secret heart of pop culture shifts from the country to the inner city. This is a dark, dangerous world. Sometimes Good Guys Don’t Wear White: Morality in the Music Press, 1967-1983 by Patrick Michael John Glen A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History November 2012 Abstract Sometimes Good Guys Don’t Wear White: Morality in the Music Press, 1967- 1983 This thesis argues that between 1967 and 1983 the music press became increasingly embroiled in extra-musical, social and cultural issues. The music press provided an arena for editors, journalists, musicians and readers to debate social mores. This has gone unnoticed in the existing historiography. The music press – which was conventionally assumed to favour ‘permissiveness’ – hosted a variety of different moral viewpoints that challenge our understanding of conversations on social mores from 1967-1983. Bringing the music press to the fore of historical analysis in this period illustrates that British moral discourse was complex, fragmented and drew from a variety of narratives from the conservative to the radical. The thesis examines how moral debates emerged in the late-1960s’ music press and then investigates the most salient themes that elicited discussions. These themes include youthful rebellion and generational divisions, sex, sexuality, drug use, gender, anti-racism, violent transgression, urban decay and alienation. The thesis analyses how these themes were narrated in the music press and identifies multiple viewpoints were articulated in reference to other tensions that affected moral conversations, such as the music press’s commercial concerns and journalistic styles. It recognises that the music press gave journalists, musicians and readers considerable scope to express their views. Thus the music press is a unique source for gauging the sentiments and proclivities of youth, music subcultures, the press and music industry.
