1 Glossary Physics (I-introduction) - Efficiency: The percent of the work put into a machine that is converted into useful work output; = work done / energy used [-]. = eta In machines: The work output of any machine cannot exceed the work input (<=100%); in an ideal machine, where no energy is transformed into heat: work(input) = work(output), =100%. Drag Force Calculation
DRAG FORCE CALCULATION “Drag is the component of force on a body acting parallel to the direction of relative motion.” [1] This can occur between two differing fluids or between a fluid and a solid. In this lab, the drag force will be explored between a fluid, air, and a solid shape. Drag force is a function of shape geometry, velocity of the moving fluid over a stationary shape, and the fluid properties density and viscosity. (1) reduces to the simple form: (2) The last two equations tell us that the altitude is a constant, and the velocity is the range rate. For now, however, we are interested in the first two equations that can be rewritten as: (3) The key thing to remember about these equations is that the weight,W,isagivenand it is equal to the Lift. Consequently, lift is not at our disposal, it must equal the given weight! Thus for a given aircraft and any given altitude, we can determine the required lift coefficient (and hence angle-of-attack) for any given airspeed. (4) Therefore at a given weight and altitude, the lift coefficient varies as 1 over V2. A sketch of lift coefficient vs. speed looks as follows: 1 It is clear from the figure that as the vehicle slows down, in order to remain in level flight, the lift coefficient (and hence angle-of-attack) must increase. [You can think of it in terms of the momentum flux. The momentum flux (the mass flow rate time the velocity out in the z direction) creates the lift force. Since the mass flow rate is directional proportional to the velocity, then the slower we go, the more the air must be deflected downward. We do this by increasing the angle-of-attack!]. -

Since 1986 and prior to joining Eastern Michigan University, he has been with the State University of New York, Oak- land University, Wayne County Community College, Wayne State University, and University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Dr. Eydgahi has received a number of awards including the Dow outstanding Young Fac- ulty Award from American Society for Engineering Education in 1990, the Silver Medal for outstanding contribution from International Conference on Automation in 1995, UNESCO Short-term Fellowship in 1996, and three faculty merit awards from the State University of New York. He is a senior member of IEEE and SME, and a member of ASEE. He is currently serving as Secretary/Treasurer of the ECE Division of ASEE and has served as a regional and chapter chairman of ASEE, SME, and IEEE, as an ASEE Campus Representative, as a Faculty Advisor for National Society of Black Engineers Chapter, as a Counselor for IEEE Student Branch, and as a session chair and a member of scientific and international committees for many international conferences. Dr. Eydgahi has been an active reviewer for a number of IEEE and ASEE and other reputedly international journals and conferences. He has published more than hundred papers in refereed international and national journals and conference proceedings such as ASEE and IEEE. Particular attention was to be given to proving the feasability and reliability of each sub-stage and ensuring that they could be combined together without compromising the quality of the resultant segment or model. In order to provide a sharp focus for this research, experimental samples were to be fabricated as if they were trailing edge segments of a 6% thick supercritical airfoil, number 0631X7, scaled to a 325mm (13in.) chord, the maximum likely to be tested in the 13in. x 13in. adaptive wall test section of the 0.3m Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel at NASA Langley Research Center. -

The FPG-9 glider demonstrates how the elevons and the rudder work. Elevons are aircraft control surfaces that combine the functions of the elevator (used for pitch control) and the aileron (used for roll control). Thus, elevons at the wing trailing edge are used for pitch and roll control. They are frequently used on tailless aircraft such as flying wings. The rudder is the small moving section at the rear of the vertical stabilizer that is attached to the fixed sections by hinges. Because the rudder moves, it varies the amount of force generated by the tail surface and is used to generate and control the yawing (left and right) motion of the aircraft. -
