His son NUMERIANUS, too, whom he had taken with him to Persia, a young man of very great ability, while, from being affected with a disease in his eyes, he was carried in a litter, was cut off by a plot of which Aper, his father-in-law, was the promoter; and his death, though attempted craftily to be concealed until Aper could seize the throne, was made known by the odour of his dead body; for the soldiers, who attended him, being struck by the smell, and opening the curtains of his litter, discovered his death some days after it had taken place. 19. 1. Calendar of Roman Events
Introduction Steve Worboys and I began this calendar in 1980 or 1981 when we discovered that the exact dates of many events survive from Roman antiquity, the most famous being the ides of March murder of Caesar. Flipping through a few books on Roman history revealed a handful of dates, and we believed that to fill every day of the year would certainly be impossible. From 1981 until 1989 I kept the calendar, adding dates as I ran across them. In 1989 I typed the list into the computer and we began again to plunder books and journals for dates, this time recording sources. Since then I have worked and reworked the Calendar, revising old entries and adding many, many more. The Roman Calendar The calendar was reformed twice, once by Caesar in 46 BC and later by Augustus in 8 BC. Each of these reforms is described in A. K. Michels’ book The Calendar of the Roman Republic. In an ordinary pre-Julian year, the number of days in each month was as follows: 29 January 31 May 29 September 28 February 29 June 31 October 31 March 31 Quintilis (July) 29 November 29 April 29 Sextilis (August) 29 December. The Romans did not number the days of the months consecutively. They reckoned backwards from three fixed points: The kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends is the first day of the month. For months with 31 days the nones fall on the 7th and the ides the 15th. For other months the nones fall on the 5th and the ides on the 13th. -

Master of Arts (History), August 2014, 108 pp., bibliography, 114 titles. This thesis explores the life and reign of Julian the Apostate the man who ruled over the Roman Empire from A.D. 361-363. The study of Julian the Apostate’s reign has historically been eclipsed due to his clash with Christianity. After the murder of his family in 337 by his Christian cousin Constantius, Julian was sent into exile. These emotional experiences would impact his view of the Christian religion for the remainder of his life. Julian did have conflict with the Christians but his main goal in the end was the revival of ancient paganism and the restoration of the Empire back to her glory. The purpose of this study is to trace the education and experiences that Julian had undergone and the effects they it had on his reign. Julian was able to have both a Christian and pagan education that would have a lifelong influence on his reign. -

4˚ Domingo de Pascua 4th Sunday of Easter May 3rd, 2020 Saint of the Month St. Athanasius of Alexandria, Bishop and Doctor of the Church by catholiconline.com St. Athanasius, also known as Athanasius the Great and Atha- nasius the Confessor, was a bishop and doctor of the church. He is called the "Father of Orthodoxy," the "Pillar of the Church" and "Champion of Christ's Divinity." Athanasius became one of the most dedicated opponents of the heresy of Arianism. Much of his life was a testimony to the divinity of Jesus Christ. Born in either 296 or 298 in Alexandria, Egypt to a prominent Christian family, Athanasius received a wonderful education in Christian doctrine, Greek litera- ture, philosophy, rhetoric and jurisprudence. He was well studied in the Hebrew Scriptures and the Gospel accounts and the Christian texts which would later be recognized by the Church as the canon of the New Testament. He credited the confessors during the Christian persecution under the Roman Emperor Maximian as his teachers of theology. Bishop Alexander of Alexandria became a strong influ- ence in Athanasius' life after Alexander witnessed him playing at administering Baptism as a young boy, with other children. Alexander called the boys over and after questioning them, he determined the baptisms were valid and decided to train them for priesthood. As he grew up, Athanasius befriended many monks and her- mits of the desert, including St. Antony. He later wrote the biography of Antony. Athanasius became Alexander's secretary in 318 after being ordained a deacon. Around this time, Ath- anasius wrote his first work, a theological treatise on the Incarnation which is still quoted extensively in Christian theological studies and spiritual literature. -

CHAPTER 10 Introduction This is the last chapter in the Res Gestae exclusively devoted to events in the West. It is a coda following the death of Valentinian I, the real conclusion of Amm.’s narrative about the western half of the empire. As such it might be compared to the second half of Book 25, which deals with the short reign of Jovian, after Julian had fallen in battle. The central event in this short chapter is the elevation of Valentinian’s four-year old son, who had the same name as his father, to the rank of Augustus. The death of an emperor, especially when it had not been foreseen, often led to a political crisis, which was only resolved when a successor had rmly taken the reins of power in his hands. In this case there was a successor at hand in the person of Valentinian’s son Gratian, now sixteen years old, made co-Augustus by his father eight years before and residing in Trier. However, the military and civilian leaders, who had participated in Valentinian’s cam- paign against the Quadi, decided otherwise and hurriedly chose the infant Valentinian II as his father’s successor. According to Ammianus they acted out of fear for the Gallic troops, brought over to Illyricum for the Quadian campaign, who had a reputation for wilfulness and a tendency to push for- ward one of their own as a candidate for the throne. Merobaudes, one of Valentinian’s generals, tricked the Gallic troops into believing that Valen- tinian had given orders that they should return to the Rhine border under his command. -

Parker 2003 ABSTRACT This dissertation will describe and analyze how state officials, educators, publishers, and historians in Poland have addressed the task of reforming its national curriculum standards and supporting textbooks in the period of transition from the end of Communist rule in 1989 to the introduction of a new system of education in 1999. The goals of this study are to determine (1) the sources of transitional curriculum policies in history education and the role of reform actors in Poland since 1989; (2) why the history education curriculum reforms changed as they did between the creation of proposals and the eventual codification of the reform into law; (3) the influences on the reform of history textbooks during the transitional period; (4) the differences between anticipated goals and actual outcomes of the curricular and textbook reforms, and (5) how to account for those changes in light of the greater scope of the historical development of democratic education in Poland. This grounded study is based on multiple data sources, including documentary evidence, professional journals, and personal interviews with individuals participating in the reform of the history curriculum.
