Transport and Technology
Transport and Technology Collections 1 Introduction The Transport and Technology Collections reflect the leading role played by Glasgow and the West of Scotland in advances made in scientific enquiry and industrial production. The technology collections were first developed for the opening of the City Industrial Museum in 1870. This was intended to highlight the output of Glasgow’s industries and included samples and models from the important chemical, textile, locomotive and shipbuilding firms in the area. There were also examples of innovations in the making of optical and scientific instruments and communications technology. The museum displayed Glasgow’s civic pride in its scientific and industrial achievements and provided a prestigious front window for its products. It also played an important didactic role in teaching Glasgow’s young citizens about engineering and technology. Many of the collections were loaned and often replaced by newer more impressive exhibits. Even items formally acquired into this collection were regarded with the same spirit of renewal and were often discarded in favour of more representative examples of modern industry. Although much has been lost there is still much of great interest that has survived from the early days of the museum. This is partly as a result of industrial failure when loaned material from failed companies was retained and eventually assimilated into the core collections. Such a direct relationship between the city’s industries and the museum collections gives them an added degree of significance. This is particularly true of the outstanding ship and marine engineering models. The Clyde was at the forefront of revolutionary change in the shipbuilding industry so not only is the collection a truly representative sample of the Clyde’s output, it also represents an important period of ship design and building that is unsurpassed anywhere in the world. -

But a portion of visitors also want further enticements, asking: what do The Islands offer beyond beaches and sun? Where can I learn of the historic story of Hawaii? What are the special experiences of nature available here? The answers begin as your plane touches down at Honolulu International Airport and the magic of the eight major Islands in the Hawaiian group infuses your sensibility. First of all, you have just made a long voyage, fully five-and-a-half hours from the U.S. West Coast or perhaps more if you came from Asia. After traversing long stretches of ocean, the islands suddenly appear (if you have a daylight flight), as improbable as they must have seemed to the first Polynesians who sailed and paddled their canoes from the South Seas to this site about A.D. 750. From out of nowhere you alight into a fully realized dream, Hawaii. Soon you begin observing the people in this airport. The most striking aspect of the people is that their racial origins are diverse and are primarily from the Orient and South Pacific. Some main groups were Polynesians, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. The ethnic groups that make up Hawaii are so different from the North American experience that the place is truly exotic, a foreign country, yet English-speaking. The history of Hawaii, an inquiring visitor soon learns, leans culturally toward the Pacific Basin, unlike the U.S. -

The Tall Ship Glenlee Large Print Guide This guide will follow the one-way system currently in place. The interpretation text for our two exhibitions are at the back of this guide. Please return this guide to the ticket pavilion at the end of your visit. Welcome Sign ‘Sail back in time’ Glenlee is a lucky ship. Once one of over 700 Clydebuilt steel barques, just five still remain. These ships carried cargoes over all of the world and overcame nature and mishaps alike. Like the ships of steel, the crew who sailed them were also made of stern stuff. Glenlee, like Cutty Sark, the only other square- rigged cargo vessel in the UK, survived by finding use as a training ship. Now returned to the Clyde, Glenlee is a museum ship representing Scotland and Glasgow’s shipbuilding heritage and maritime tradition. Step back in time and enjoy your visit. Forward Deckhouse ‘I heard the seas coming aboard in the forenoon and heard that Jock had got his bunk wet. I have had that experience on one or two occasions and find it rather unpleasant.’ Extract from the 1918 personal log of Ernest M Andersen, an apprentice on board this ship. Up to 16 men would eat, sleep and spend what little leisure time they had in this deckhouse. During their free time, sailors would play instruments, craft model ships, and play cards. Scrimshaw was also a popular pastime. This involved soaking a whale’s tooth, walrus tusk, or other bone in brine to soften it. It was then engraved using a sharp needle.
