GLOUCESTER CATHEDRAL MUSIC PATRONS Securing a musical tradition for tomorrow

Presidents: Dame Sarah Connolly and Edward Gardner OBE Herbert Howells, Ivor Gurney, , Gustav Holst, Hubert Parry … just some of the names who viewed as their musical home. As a musical descendant of this stellar list, I work hard to keep the Cathedral’s choral reputation as high as I can. The excellence of our professional choirs and the accessibility of our other choirs is wonderful, but maintaining them is only possible with regular financial support. We simply could not offer all that we do without the generous donations of a growing number of people who value the singing and music making that help to bring this ancient and spiritual place to life. We would be delighted if you were to become one of them. – Director of Music

The years I was a chorister at Gloucester Cathedral were some of the best of my life. The skills I learned singing in the Cathedral Choir have served me so well in my career, and I would like as many boys and girls as possible to have the benefits I enjoyed. I would urge anyone with an interest in the future of music in this country to lend their support to this valuable scheme – even a small amount can make a huge difference. Edward Gardner OBE – President of Gloucester Cathedral Choir

I am thrilled to be the first President of Music at Gloucester Cathedral, and Patron of the Girl Choristers. It has never been more important to ensure that musical opportunities are offered to girls and boys of all backgrounds, and the work done at Gloucester Cathedral continues to produce a generation of youngsters who take a love of music forward into their lives. Dame Sarah Connolly – President of Music at Gloucester Cathedral and Patron of the Girl Choristers A MUSICAL TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE AND OPPORTUNITY

Music is at the heart of Gloucester Cathedral; it is unthinkable to imagine Evensong without choristers or the sound of the famous organ ringing around the ancient nave. Our choristers, choral scholars and organ scholars benefit from a musical education of the highest standard, and many go on to study music at the UK’s top universities and conservatoires, forging futures for themselves as professional musicians. Our regular outreach work also ensures that school children throughout Gloucestershire discover the joy of singing through workshops and performance. Those who are interested then have opportunities to become part of the Cathedral’s musical life by joining one of our three choirs. With your help, we can continue to build on our musical heritage and to offer opportunities to young musicians of all backgrounds.

“I think the Junior Voices Project was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. The sound of everyone singing together was amazing.” A FORMER CHORISTER’S STORY

When a six-year-old boy comes home from his local primary school heartily singing the songs he has learnt that day, something needs to be done about it. So when my parents were passed a newspaper advert saying, “Could your son be the next chorister at Gloucester Cathedral?” they asked the advice of my school singing teacher. Andrew Nethsingha, Director of Music at the time, did not know what had hit him when I turned up and sang ‘Crash, bang, wallop!’ for my audition, but apparently he heard some potential, and I joined King’s School and the Cathedral Choir at age seven. The confidence from singing solos for thousands of people, alongside the work ethic and routine of a demanding schedule, all make for an education like no other. Since leaving the Cathedral, I’ve spent a year as a choral scholar in the Choir and have a confirmed place to read Music at Robinson College, Cambridge. And so thirteen years after that life-changing audition, I successfully sang for Andrew Nethsingha again, this time for a place in the world-renowned Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge. I owe everything I now have, I do, and my future to Gloucester Cathedral Choir. And most importantly: Any girl or boy who shows some potential and is willing to have a go, can do it!
