Matilde Serao Lived: March 7, 1856 - July 25, 1927 Worked as: film critic, journalist, screenwriter, source author, writer Worked In: Italy by Anita Trivelli An Italian writer and journalist who was born in Patrasso, Greece, to a Greek mother and Neapolitan father, an anti-Bourbon exile, Matilde Serao’s relentless and eclectic writing was distinguished by her extraordinarily committed professionalism. She cofounded several newspapers in Rome and Naples with Edoardo Scarfoglio, whom she married in 1885. For years, they were the most brilliant and followed couple in Italian journalism. After divorcing her husband, Serao established her own daily, the Neapolitan Il Giorno (1904), which she headed until her death. She was the first Italian woman, and until recently the only woman, to run a newspaper in Italy. In her copious narrative production, which included more than forty volumes of novels and short stories, Serao depicted the lower middle class and working class life of Naples using a personal, visionary, and spectacular style derived from the southern Realism (Verismo) so effective in her initial literary works. Well received and so esteemed in France that her translator, Georges Hérelle, was also the translator of Gabriele D’Annunzio and Grazia Deledda, she wrote for La revue blanche alongside Marcel Proust and Guillaume Apollinaire and was a regular guest at the famous Parisian salon of countess Rosa de Fritz-James. Her personality and work drew the attention of Germaine Dulac. A close and long-time friend of Eleonora Duse, whose theatrical plays she frequently reviewed, Serao herself most probably suggested to Duse the novel Cenere (1904) by Grazia Deledda, which Duse then adapted for film as her only cinematic performance (Cenere, 1916). -

MODERNIST MEANINGS IN THE EUROPEAN RENOVATION OF COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE DRAMA Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Anita Jean Saha, B.A., M.A. Graduate Program in Spanish and Portuguese The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Eugenia Romero, Advisor Stephen Summerhill, Co-advisor Rebecca Haidt Copyright by Anita Jean Saha 2014 Abstract This dissertation explores the rediscovery of commedia dell’arte theatre in Europe during the Modernist era (approximately 1890-1930) by dramatists and theatre directors, which led to its usage as a tool for individual experimentation and general escape from the anxieties associated with the changing political environment. The appropriation of commedia dell’arte theatre was, for many theatre practitioners, the perfect structure with which to counteract the dominant realist aesthetic that was prevalent throughout Europe at the time. Although these Modernist commedia-based plays and productions were generally created as art-for-art’s sake, this is not the case everywhere, as evidenced by some of the themes, both overt and masked, in the works of a few Spanish dramatists. Using literary history as the theoretical framework, this dissertation contends that Modernist commedia-based dramas serve as an appropriate point of departure for comprehending literary reactions to, and reproductions of, the revolutions in technology, politics, and social practices that contributed to the modern order. While representations of cynical clowns, such as Harlequin, were mostly apolitical, the pessimism that dominates the farces, the pantomimes and the puppet plays can be viewed in response to the radically changing social and political environment. -

She had left Naples for Rome in the autumn of 1881, when she was offered a post as journalist for one of the capital's major newspapers. She had high hopes that this, her fourth novel, but the first to be set in Rome, would bring her recognition as a writer of national importance. Moreover by developing her tale of unrequited love in the context of the city's social and parliamentary life, she was free to draw on her experience as a journalist and observer of Roman life. Her choice of protagonist, Francesco Sangiorgio, an aspiring young politician from the Basilicata (one of the poorest regions of Southern Italy), and of subject-matter, his brief but eventful parliamentary career, allowed her to recast within a fictional framework her own impressions of the city that she had moved to as an outsider three years earlier. -

This study of Serao’s female-centered narratives explores the predominant themes of solidarity, alienation, power, sacrifice, collective memory, and social consciousness. The first chapter, “The Language of Passion,” explores the unique language Serao employs to depict passionate love. The second chapter, “Martyrdom and Marginality,” ponders the grim fate of marginalized women and girls who, without the support and comfort of their female comrades, are unable to successfully navigate what is ostensibly a man’s world. Chapter Three, “Da lei, tutto,” examines the mother-daughter relationship and Serao’s overall treatment of motherhood. Chapter Four, “Chorality and Collective Memory,” investigates Serao’s choral studies, and their essential connection with collective memory. Dennis Tredy is a tenured associate professor (maître de conférences) at the University of Paris III – Sorbonne Nouvelle, where he teaches American Literature and Creative Writing. He has published numerous articles on the works of Henry James, Truman Capote and Vladimir Nabokov, and his doctoral thesis of 2002 dealt with The ‘Innocent Reflector’ and Its Function in the Works of Henry James’s ‘Experimental Period’. His most recent studies of Henry James have dealt with the reception of James’s work in Europe, with James’s reception of English and French authors, and with film adaptations of the works of James. Annick Duperray is Emeritus Professor of American Literature at the Université of Provence (Aix-Marseille Université). She is volume editor for two of the four volumes of the critical edition of Henry James’s Nouvelles complètes (Editions Gallimard/Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, 2003). Her publications include an analytical study of Henry James’s tales, Echec et écriture : essai sur les nouvelles d’Henry James (1993) and a contribution to Henry James in Context (David McWhirter ed., Cambridge University Press, 2010). She also edited The Reception of Henry James in Europe (Continuum Books, 2006).
