Academic work limited his concert opportunities and he gained a place at Christ’s College, HOLBROOKE Cambridge, to read Natural Sciences and Engineering. Here he gave recitals of solo piano and chamber music and performed concertos with college orchestras. Zeiss, Ph.D. The turn of the century in France saw an increased intensity of interest in equating the arts of poetry and music. England experienced a similar trend. Debussy and Ravel were influenced by the Symbolist poets and their aesthetic of abstract musical expression of ideas and outright rejection of Romanticism. John Ireland in England sought to express the sense of loss and longing in Victorian poetry through his music, while Joseph Holbrooke based his musical forms on direct representation of dramatic and mysterious Romantic poetry, especially that of Edgar Allan Poe, through text painting and similar techniques. Each of these composers’ music reflects formal aspects, emotional values, and rhythmic qualities of the poetry in which they were immersed, as analyses of Debussy’s Preludes, Ravel’s Jeux d’eau, Ireland’s Green Ways, and Holbrooke’s Nocturnes demonstrate. Prior to the twentieth century, numerous composers are known to have played the viola, and some even preferred it, but none possessed the drive or saw the necessity to establish it as an equal solo counterpart to the violin or cello. Likewise, no performer before Tertis had established themselves as a renowned exponent of the viola. Tertis made it his life’s work to bring the viola to the fore, and his musical prowess and technical ability on the instrument gave him the tools to succeed. Tertis was primarily a performer, thus collaboration with composers also comprised a necessary element of his viola crusade. He commissioned works from several British composers, including one of the first and most prolific composers for the viola, York Bowen (1884-1961).

What is particularly notable is that the early principals of the Royal Academy were almost always prominent composers and the directors of the Royal College were very often composers, too. The history of the founding and the back- ground of these two conservatories gives some understanding of their po- sition and standing by the end of World War I. In the early 1820s patriotic amateurs promoted ideas for the founda- tion of a Royal Academy of Music, but this was initially opposed by the mu- sic profession, which felt that there were too many musicians anyway. The professionals then tried unsuccessfully to associate the proposed academy with the long-standing Philharmonic Society, which later commissioned Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony during the same period. In the end the am- ateurs, principally John Fane, eleventh Earl of Westmorland (also known as Lord Berghersh) with assistance of royalty, notably King George IV, suc- ceeded in establishing the Academy of Music in 1822 in London, the first of the British conservatories, receiving its royal charter in 1830 to become the Royal Academy of Music. To create a strong credibility for the institution the founders needed to appoint a distinguished principal, although the choice was perhaps not that difficult.

The particular aspects that mark this out as different from many Web sites are considered in the paper, as well as a comparison with print-based equivalents, but I will begin with a consideration of the subject focus of the service. Free improvisation The origins of free improvisation date back to the mid 1960s and lie in a mixture of the avant garde end of jazz – Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor – and contemporary classical music – Schoenberg, Webern. In fact, at this time, established methods of improvising, using particular forms of approach, were being challenged in rather different ways in the US and in Europe. But even within Europe there were no (fortunately) co-ordinated stirrings, and musicians in three countries in particular – England, Holland and Germany – are acknowledged as developing new methods of playing improvised music, working broadly independently of each other (which is not to say there weren’t others).

Albrecht The latter part of the nineteenth and the early part of the twentieth centuries saw what is commonly accepted as a resurgence in music from the British Isles, but to this day, most of the actual music of this resurgence remains unknown to all but the most knowledgeable of art music aficionados. Among the composers active during this period, one of the most heralded in his day but little recognized now is Sir Arnold Bax (1883 – 1953). To the aforementioned aficionados, he is known for several substantial yet infrequently performed contributions to the symphonic repertoire, among them the tone poem Tintagel. Known in England as a composer, Bax carried on a separate life as a writer of poetry and drama in Ireland, working under the name Dermot O’Byrne. At the time of composition of the tone poem, Bax also wrote a four- stanza verse poem titled “Tintagel Castle.” Both were written for and dedicated to the pianist Harriet Cohen, with whom he was having an affair. The focus of this dissertation is an extensive look at the circumstances surrounding the composition of Tintagel, examining factors of development in Bax’s compositional style, his personal life including the affair with Harriet Cohen, and the influence of Yeats and Irish culture on Bax’s writings as Dermot O’Byrne.

Based on original research, undertaken at the private archives of the Dorothy Howell Trust, the thesis provides a detailed account of the composer’s life and catalogue of her works.     HODGES, BETSI, D.M.A. W. W. Cobbett’s Phantasy: A Legacy of Chamber Music in the British Musical Renaissance. (2008) Directed by Dr. Andrew Harley. 73 pp. The purpose of this dissertation is to determine the role that Walter Willson Cobbett (1847-1937) played in the British Musical Renaissance by his initiation of a series of chamber music competitions, beginning in 1905, each of which required the composition of a phantasy. The phantasy was Cobbett’s reinvention of an older genre, the fancy, or fantasia, which had been popular in sixteenth- and seventeenth- century England. A vast number of new British chamber compositions was generated from these competitions. After examining the events of Cobbett’s life that contributed to his involvement and passion for music, the paper discusses some of the events and issues that caused England to experience a musical renaissance. This leads to a discussion of the history of the fancy in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Cobbett’s reinvention of the genre and some of the reactions to it are subsequently examined. The competitions themselves are presented in great detail with the results and descriptions and/or reviews of some of the winning compositions.     Joseph Charles Holbrooke (5 July 1878 – 5 August 1958). Joseph Holbrooke was born Joseph Charles Holbrook in Croydon, Surrey. His father, also named Joseph, was a music hall musician and teacher, and his mother Helen was a Scottish singer. Holbrooke was taught to play the piano and the violin by his father, who was not averse to the use of violence as a method of instruction, and played in music halls himself before entering the Royal Academy of Music as a student in 1893, where he studied under Frederick Corder for composition and Frederick Westlake for piano. Whilst at the academy he composed several works, chiefly piano miniatures, songs and some chamber music, which were performed at student concerts: at one recital, he substituted one of his own compositions in preference to Schumann's Toccata, incurring the wrath of the Principal, Sir Alexander Campbell Mackenzie. Whilst at the Royal Academy, Holbrooke won several prizes including the Potter Exhibition for pianoforte (1895), the Sterndale Bennett Scholarship (awarded on 29 April 1896), the Heathcote Long Prize for pianoforte (1896) and, in his final year (with the Pantomime Suite for strings), the Charles Lucas Prize for composition (1897). After leaving the Royal Academy Holbrooke sought a variety of occupations. In 1898 he undertook a tour of Scotland accompanying the music hall singer Arthur Lloyd,[16][17] but the venture failed and he was forced to return to live with his father in London.[18] He then moved out of the family home to Harringay where he began to teach music privately, but once again without financial success.
