George Simpson to John McLoughlin, 1842 By Governor George Simpson Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) Governor George Simpson wrote this short letter to John McLoughlin, chief factor of the company’s Columbia Department, on April 27, 1842, to inform him of the recent murder of his son, John McLoughlin, Jr. “Young John” was chief trader of Fort Stikine, a fur-trading post rented from the Russian American Company on the southeast Alaskan coast. This typescripted version was edited by E. E. Rich and published in 1943 in The Letters of John McLoughlin from Fort Vancouver to the Governor and Committee, Second Series, 1839 – 44 John McLoughlin, Jr. was born on August 18, 1812. For most of his youth, he was raised apart from his father, primarily by his great-uncle, Simon Fraser. Although young John’s first appeal to join the ranks of the HBC was denied (by Simpson himself), his subsequent participation in James Dickson’s failed “Indian Liberating Army” in 1836 gave cause for Simpson to re-evaluate his earlier assessment. Simpson decided to offer young John, along with several other trouble-making “half-breeds” like him, positions in the company rather than have them unemployed and directionless within HBC trading territory. Young John was made chief trader of Fort Stikine during the spring of 1841. He was murdered there in April 1842. Simpson discovered the death of young John while on a tour of the Columbia Department’s coastal operations. Although his letter to McLoughlin was brief, Simpson’s depiction of the murder as “justifiable homicide” enraged the bereaved father. -

It is fifty folios in length in a bound volume of ninety folios, the final forty folios being blank. Each page measures 12.8 inches by seven inches and is lined with thirty- five faint, horizontal blue-grey lines. -

Craigdarroch Military Hospital: A Canadian War Story Bruce Davies Curator © Craigdarroch Castle 2016 2 Abstract As one of many military hospitals operated by the federal government during and after The Great War of 1914-1918, the Dunsmuir house “Craigdarroch” is today a lens through which museum staff and visitors can learn how Canada cared for its injured and disabled veterans. Broad examination of military and civilian medical services overseas, across Canada, and in particular, at Craigdarroch, shows that the Castle and the Dunsmuir family played a significant role in a crucial period of Canada’s history. This paper describes the medical care that wounded and sick Canadian soldiers encountered in France, Belgium, Britain, and Canada. It explains some of the measures taken to help permanently disabled veterans successfully return to civilian life. Also covered are the comprehensive building renovations made to Craigdarroch, the hospital's official opening by HRH The Prince of Wales, and the question of why the hospital operated so briefly. By highlighting the wartime experiences of one Craigdarroch nurse and one Craigdarroch patient, it is seen that opportunities abound for rich story- telling in a new gallery now being planned for the museum. Fur Traders' Pistols Charles E. Hanson, Jr. The fur trade lasted over 400 years as our frontiers moved slowly to the west and- north across North America. Hundreds of thousands of guns were used by white traders and sold to Indians. Some of them were, quite naturally, pistols. Ordinarily Indians used long guns for hunting and were not too interested in pistols. However, a few were sold to them by British companies in the 18th Century and hundreds more were issued to Indian allies by the British during the War of 1812. Traders and their employees in the wilderness habitually carried both pocket and holster pistols for protection. Graphic, Textual 2.00 meters Title: R.B.A. Cragg fonds Dates of Creation: 1933-1979 Physical Description: ca. 80 cm of photographs, ca. 40 cm of negatives, ca. 4000 slides, and 1 cm of textual records Biographical Sketch: Richard Balderston Alec Cragg was born on December 5, 1912 in Minatitlan, Mexico while his father worked on a construction contract. In 1919 his family moved to Canada to settle. Cragg gained training as a printer and worked in various towns before being hired by the Kamloops Sentinel in 1944. Cragg worked for the Sentinel until his retirement at age 65, and continued to write a weekly opinion column entitled “By The Way” until shortly before his death. During his time in Kamloops Cragg was active in the Kamloops Museum Association, the International Typographical Union (acting as president on the Kamloops branch for a time), the BPO Elks Lodge Kamloops Branch, and the Rock Club. Cragg was married to Queenie Elizabeth Phillips, with whom he had one daughter (Karen). Richard Balderson Alec Cragg died on January 22, 1981 in Kamloops, B.C. at age 68. Scope and Content: Fonds consists predominantly of photographic materials created by R.B.A. Cragg during his time in Kamloops. Fonds also contains a small amount of textual ephemera collected by Cragg and his wife Queenie, such as ration books and souvenir programs. -

L INTRODUCTION IT IS CONVENTIONAL TO SEEK THE HISTORICAL ROOTS of British Columbia labour in the colonial era, that is to say, beginning in 1849 or thereabouts. That was when Britain established Vancouver Island, its first colony on the North Pacific coast, and granted the Hudson's 1991 CanLIIDocs 164 Bay Company fee simple title on the condition that they bring out settlers.' It is a good place to begin, because the first batch of colonists were not primarily gentlemen farmers or officials but coal miners and agricultural labourers, and neither the Company nor Vancouver Island lived up to their expectations.'
