Box 655 Heathmont Vic. 3135 NEWSLETTER No. XS (ISSN 103 8-6017) Qctaber zaQ4 Greetings as once again we begin to enjoy the longer days of spring-summer and the encouragement this provides for many of our flowering plants. Despite the generally dry conditions many Epacris species are putting on outstanding floral displays. How are you going with your recording of the flowering times of Epacris impressa in your garden, as well as in nearby bushland or in other areas as you travel within Australia? It really is quite an exciting project because together we, as Study Group members, can make a real contribution to the overall understanding of this species, adding to the knowledge and research of botanists who look in detail at the features of the plant under the microscope and in its natural habitat. It iis a species which occurs both atsea-level and at higher altitudes. How are the flowering times affected when highland plants are cultivated at lower altitudes? Are flowering times different when plants fiom New South Wales for example are gvown much further south in soulhern Victoria or Tasmania ? Epacris impressu seems like an excellent species for us to research in this way. If our project is successful we may perhaps be able to continue with looking at the flowering times of other Epacris which are relatively common in cultivation. PO Box 1059, GPO Melbourne 3001 Correspondence: Barry Clark, [email protected] ABSTRACT: The multidisciplinary approach of Alexander von Humboldt in scientific studies of the natural world in the first half of the nineteenth century gained early and lasting acclaim. Later, given the broad scientific interests of colonial Victoria’s first Government Astronomer Robert Ellery, one could expect to find some evidence of the Humboldtian approach in the operations of Williamstown Observatory and its successor, Melbourne Observatory. On examination, and without discounting the importance of other international scientific contributions, it appears that Melbourne Observatory was indeed substantially influenced from afar by Humboldt and other German scientists, and in person by Georg Neumayer in particular. Some of the ways in which these influences acted are obvious but others are less so. Like the other Australian state observatories, in its later years Melbourne Observatory had to concentrate its diminishing resources on positional astronomy and timekeeping. Along with Sydney Observatory, it has survived almost intact to become a heritage treasure, perpetuating appreciation of its formative influences. Georg Balthasar Neumayer (1826–1909) was probably the most important figure in establishing mari- time services and ocean research in Germany, after he spent several years in Australia as a young scientist. He succeeded to found the ‘Deutsche Seewarte’ in Hamburg, the predecessor of the modern BSH (Bunde- samt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie—Federal Martime and Hydrographic Agency) in Hamburg and Rostock and established a wide range of maritime services by providing sailing instructions for merchant vessels. He took initiatives towards Germany´s first global ocean expedition on Gazelle, the first Interna- tional Polar Year, the first German Antarctic Expedition on Gauss, and became a widely recognised and respected science manager, on the national as well on the international scene. Ludwig Leichhardt: A German Explorer’s Letters Home from Australia Heike Hartmann Seventeen letters sent by Ludwig Leichhardt from 1842–48 vividly depict his stay in Australia. In this exhibition curated by historian Heike Hartmann, we are introducing a brand new English translation of the letters and a timeline tool with which to view those, this virtual exhibition documents Leichhardt’s adventurous stay in Australia and opens up new perspectives for the environmental history of the land, Europeans’ engagement with its indigenous population, and international scientific networks at the time. His first expedition (1844–1845) found a viable route between the east and north coasts of the colony and established Leichhardt’s reputation as the “Prince of Explorers.” In 1848 he set out on an expedition to cross the continent from east to west; the entire expedition party disappeared and was never found. -

Kelvedon 29th. 1mo 1868 Respected Friend Ferdinand Mueller I have no doubt thou art wondering at my long delay in answering thy letters of 18/11/67 & 3/12/67 – the latter arrived in due course but the former was missent to Hobart Town instead of Swansea & from thence I suppose forwarded to Oyster Cove on the Derwent there it must have laid some time as it was only the other day that I received it. I hope thy trip to Western Australia has renewed thy health. I should have considered Tasmania a better climate for an [page break] Invalid; it was perhaps too early in the spring for this climate. If it is thy intention to write a paper on the Botany of this District for the R.S of Tasma would it not be as well to wait until I have sent the whole of my specimens. I regret to say that I go on very slowly with them having many interruptions, one month passes after another & little progress is made but the collecting & drying the specimens takes much time – The names I give to the plants must in most cases be altogether wrong, & besides not having looked at Botany for a long period I have forgotten a great deal of what I then knew & therefore feel much obliged by having the correct names & which I register in my collection The first mentioned are the Acacia I have a few more species to send 2nd Backia [Baeckea] diffusa [page break] Having furnished the first case only on this day – although I have devoted as much spare time to it as possible reminds me that it will be some time before a second case is ready, in the mean time I shall hear from -

Cohn National Herbarium of Victoria, Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, Birdwood Avenue, South Yarra, Vic. 3141 [email protected] Abstract The National Herbarium of Victoria was founded with the appointment on 26 January 1853 of Victoria’s first Government Botanist, Ferdinand Mueller. With a brief to investigate the local flora, Mueller worked assiduously to make the results of his work available to the public. Mueller’s research concentrated on the discovery of the Australian flora. His successors as Government Botanist struggled with a lowered expectation on the part of government of the role of the Herbarium and inadequate resources. The collections were built from nothing into a world-class herbarium. In more recent times research programs have continued to document the Australian flora and some have expanded to take advantage of new research techniques. In 1853 the colony of Victoria was enjoying an unprecedented level of prosperity, with burgeoning gold revenues and waves of immigrants seeking their fortunes. This young colony, less than 20 years old, had achieved a measure of independence in 1851 with the formal separation of the Port Philip District from New South Wales. The citizens now had a large degree of self-determination having, among other things, a partially elected parliament. Lieutenant Governor Charles La Trobe exercised an enlarged vice-regal decision-making responsibility. He and his civil administrators had the difficult job of establishing a public infrastructure that was capable of dealing with a rapidly enlarging population and its spread into uncharted parts of the country. -

Humboldt and Hansteen had turned to geomagnetism. Through the “G,ottinger Mag- netischer Verein”, a worldwide cooperation under the leadership of Gauss came into existence. Even today, Gauss’s theory of geomagnetism is one of the pillars of geomagnetic research. Thereafter, J.v. Lamont, in Munich, took over the leadership in Germany. In England, the Magnetic Crusade was started by the initiative of John Herschel and E. Sabine. At the beginning of the 1840s, James Clarke Ross advanced to the vicinity of the southern magnetic pole on the Antarctic Continent, which was then quite unknown. Ten years later, Sabine was able to demonstrate solar–terrestrial relations from the data of the colonial observatories. In the 1980s, Arthur Schuster, following Balfour Stewart’s ideas, succeeded in interpreting the daily variations of the electrical process in the high atmosphere. Geomagnetic research work in Germany was given a fresh impetus by the programme of the First Polar Year 1882–1883. Georg Neumayer, director of the “Deutsche Seewarte” in Hamburg, was one of the initiators of the Polar Year. -
