Smith, Unit Director The National Park Service and the University of Hawaii signed the memorandum of agreement establishing this Cooperative National Park Resources Studies Unit on March 16, 1973. The Unit provides a multidisciplinary approach to studies on the biological resources in the National Parks in Hawaii, that is, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Haleakala National Park, City of Refuge National Historical Park, and Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site. Through the Unit Director, projects are undertaken in areas identified by park management. These studies provide information of resource management programs. The involvement of University faculty and students in the resource management of the National Parks in Hawaii lends to a greater awareness of the problems and needs of the Service. At the same time research not directly or immediately applicable to management is also encouraged through the Unit. La Trobe's Cottage Garden News
La Trobe’s Cottage Garden News Spring/summer 2011 There has been a lot happening in the garden over the last two years. On the 3 October 2010 we celebrated the 171st year of La Trobe’s arrival in Melbourne by planting a cutting of an Olive tree Olea europaea. It came from Ballam Park in Frankston that was owned by the Liardet Family in the late 1840s. Georgiana McCrae gave her friend there a cutting from one of the olive trees growing in her orchard at Arthur’s Seat. The tree at Ballam Park still stands and is very old. (‘Olive Tree returned to McCrae Homestead’, Victorian News/National Trust, November 2010) We have also started the espaliering process on our four heritage apples. We are trying to replicate the Edward La Trobe Bateman drawing 'Kitchen and store in interior courtyard', where there are apples growing up the front of the kitchen block. They were propagated at the National Trust property, Rippon Lea, and planted in winter 2010. After much advice and trepidation, they were pruned down ready for the 2011 growing season. The gardening volunteers got together in winter to plant a huge range of bulbs that were donated by the bulb company Hancock and Co. In September, the bulbs started flowering and looked fantastic. Another development is our fantastic new fence, which is an interpretation of an early colonial fence. It gives the cottage an early colonial feeling and adds to the visitor’s experience of Melbourne in the 1840s. (see picture at page head) With the help of the City of Melbourne, Citywide, the National Trust, the Friends of La Trobe’s Cottage and the Garden of Eden Nursery in Albert Park and other sponsors, the garden over the last two years has been improving. -

Bossiaea Ensata
Bossiaea ensata Family: Fabaceae subfamily Faboideae Distribution: Woodland and open forest in south-east Queensland, eastern New South Wales and north-east Victoria. Common Sword bossiaea. From Latin ensatus, sword-like, referring to the flattened stems of this species. Conservation Not considered to be at risk in the wild. Status: General Description: Bossiaea is a genus of about 50 species all of which occur naturally only in Australia. They are found in all States and are small to medium shrubs. Bossiaea ensata Photo: Brian Walters Bossiaea ensata is a small shrub, often with a low, spreading habit and only rarely reaching about 1 metre high. It is generally leafless and has flattened, winged stems whose function takes the place of leaves (the leaves are actually reduced to small scales along the flattened stems). The stems are usually 3 to 10 mm in width (which distinguishes B.ensata from the similar B.scolopendria, which has winged stems up to 15 mm wide). True leaves are sometimes seen near the base of the plant or on juvenile stems - these true leaves are small and oval shaped. The flowers are yellow with a red centre and have the typical "pea" shape consisting of 4 petals; the "standard", the "keel" and two "wings", as shown in the diagram. They occur in the leaf "scales" in late spring and summer and are about 10-15 mm long. -

Botanic Endeavour 250 Trail Botanic Endeavour Trail - 600m | Botanic Explorers Trail - 900m Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand celebrates 250 years of the discovery of the flora of Australia’s east coast and New Zealand by western science in 1770 and over 40,000 years of traditional knowledge. Be an epic voyager for the day and discover some of the plants that Banks and Solander collected during their voyage along the east coast of Australia. Look out for the Botanic Endeavour 250 symbol to find what other plants were discovered during the voyage as you wander through the gardens. Botanic Endeavour 250 Our plants, our future Botanic Gardens and Arboreta throughout Australia and New Zealand (BGANZ) commemorate the anniversary ‘voyage of discovery’ onboard the barque Endeavour, during which Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander made a comprehensive collection of flora. Captain James Cook mapped the entire coastline of New Zealand in 1769 before traversing the east coast of Australia in 1770 from Point Hicks to Cape York. Pressings of over 520 new taxa unknown to western science were collected along the route up the east coast of Australia and these, along with thousands of botanical illustrations, somehow made it back to England in the face of shipwreck, waterlogging and the dank and humid conditions below decks. The rich abundance of diverse flora excited the botanic world and ultimately led to the settlement of the new colony. In Australia, 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of these discoveries. New Zealand celebrated this anniversary in 2019. Our Australian Indigenous heritage Prior to 1770, the Traditional Custodians of Australia lived in harmony with the land for over 40,000 years and discovered the ethnobotanic use for Australia’s native flora for food, medicine, tools, clothing and building materials. -

These categories are defined in Table 1. Any species identified as Threatened under the WC Act is assigned a threat category using the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List categories and criteria. Species that have not yet been adequately surveyed to warrant being listed under Schedule 1 or 2 are added to the Priority Flora or Fauna Lists under Priority 1, 2 or 3. Species that are adequately known, are rare but not threatened, or meet criteria for Near Threatened, or that have been recently removed from the threatened list for other than taxonomic reasons, are placed in Priority 4 and require regular monitoring. Conservation Dependent species and ecological communities are placed in Priority 5. -

Box 655 Heathmont Vic. 3135 NEWSLETTER No. XS (ISSN 103 8-6017) Qctaber zaQ4 Greetings as once again we begin to enjoy the longer days of spring-summer and the encouragement this provides for many of our flowering plants. Despite the generally dry conditions many Epacris species are putting on outstanding floral displays. How are you going with your recording of the flowering times of Epacris impressa in your garden, as well as in nearby bushland or in other areas as you travel within Australia? It really is quite an exciting project because together we, as Study Group members, can make a real contribution to the overall understanding of this species, adding to the knowledge and research of botanists who look in detail at the features of the plant under the microscope and in its natural habitat. It iis a species which occurs both atsea-level and at higher altitudes. How are the flowering times affected when highland plants are cultivated at lower altitudes? Are flowering times different when plants fiom New South Wales for example are gvown much further south in soulhern Victoria or Tasmania ? Epacris impressu seems like an excellent species for us to research in this way. If our project is successful we may perhaps be able to continue with looking at the flowering times of other Epacris which are relatively common in cultivation.
