Funk the Clock: Transgressing Time While Young, Prescient and Black A
Funk the Clock: Transgressing Time While Young, Prescient and Black A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Rahsaan Mahadeo IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Advisers: David Pellow and Joyce Bell August 2019 © 2019 Rahsaan Mahadeo Acknowledgements Pursuing a PhD has at times felt like the most selfish endeavor I have ever undertaken. For I knew that every book I read and every paper I wrote was largely for personal gain. Not coming from academic lineage or economic privilege, I could not escape the profound sense of guilt of leaving so many behind in the everyday struggle to live, labor and learn in a school that is less of a land-grant institution and more of a land-grab institution; an educational system that is more private than public; a corporation that presents students with more educational opportunists than educational opportunities; a sea of scholarship that looks more like colonizer ships; and a tower that is as anti ebony as it is ivory. Most know it as the “U of M,” when it is really the U of empire. Here, I would like to take the opportunity to counter the university’s individualistic and neoliberal logic to thank several people who have helped me cope with the challenges of living, learning and laboring in a space designed without me (and many others) in mind. Thank you to my advisers David Pellow and Joyce Bell for supporting me along my graduate school journey. Though illegible to the university, I recognize and appreciate the inordinate amount of labor you perform inside and outside the classroom. -
Internet Peer-To-Peer File Sharing Policy Effective Date 8T20t2010
Title: Internet Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Policy Policy Number 2010-002 TopicalArea: Security Document Type Program Policy Pages: 3 Effective Date 8t20t2010 POC for Changes Director, Office of Computing and Information Services (OCIS) Synopsis Establishes a Dalton State College-wide policy regarding copyright infringement. Overview The popularity of Internet peer-to-peer file sharing is often the source of network resource allocation problems and copyright infringement. Purpose This policy will define Internet peer-to-peer file sharing and state the policy of Dalton State College (DSC) on this issue. Scope The scope of this policy includes all DSC computing resources. Policy Internet peer-to-peer file sharing applications are frequently used to distribute copyrighted materials such as music, motion pictures, and computer software. Such exchanges are illegal and are not permifted on Dalton State Gollege computers or network. See the standards outlined in the Appropriate Use Policy. DSG Procedures and Sanctions Failure to comply with the appropriate use of these resources threatens the atmosphere for the sharing of information, the free exchange of ideas, and the secure environment for creating and maintaining information property, and subjects one to discipline. Any user of any DSC system found using lT resources for unethical and/or inappropriate practices has violated this policy and is subject to disciplinary proceedings including suspension of DSC privileges, expulsion from school, termination of employment and/or legal action as may be appropriate. Although all users of DSC's lT resources have an expectation of privacy, their right to privacy may be superseded by DSC's requirement to protect the integrity of its lT resources, the rights of all users and the property of DSC and the State. -
Your Chocolate Rain Are Belonging to Us?': Viral Video
‘All Your Chocolate Rain are Belonging to Us?’: Viral Video, YouTube and the Dynamics of Participatory Culture Jean Burgess Marketers and media producers for the past several years have been racing to capture the marketing potential of both online social networks and user-created content. ‘Viral marketing’, for example, is the attempt to exploit the network effects of word-of-mouth and internet communication to induce a massive number of users to pass on ‘marketing messages and brand information voluntarily’.1 The related term ‘viral video’ has emerged to describe the phenomenon in which video clips become highly popular through rapid, user-led distribution via the internet. How, or whether, the ‘bottom-up’ dynamics of viral video can be mobilised for instrumental purposes—from marketing to political advertising—remains an open question. But ‘viral video’ could be much more than a banal marketing buzzword—in fact, interrogating it a bit more closely in the specific context of YouTube can help us cut through the hype and better understand some of the more complex characteris- tics of participatory popular culture online. In popular usage, the term ‘viral’ (and the related internet ‘meme’) are of course very loosely applied biological metaphors, appropriated from various attempts to develop a science of cultural transmission based on evolutionary theory that have been unfolding for decades. The contested field of ‘memetics’ is the best-known, but by no means only, strand of this kind of 86 JEAN BURGESS : ALL YOUR CHOCOLATE RAIN thinking, which began with Richard Dawkins’ proposal in The Selfish Gene of the ‘meme’ as the corresponding cultural unit to the biological gene.2 Similar to the scientific usage in meaning if not analytical precision, in contemporary popular usage an internet ‘meme‘ is a faddish joke or practice (like a humorous way of captioning cat pictures) that becomes widely imitated. -
The Copyright Crusade
The Copyright Crusade Abstract During the winter and spring of 2001, the author, chief technology officer in Viant's media and entertainment practice, led an extensive inqUiry to assess the potential impact of extant Internet file-sharing capabilities on the business models of copyright owners and holders. During the course of this project he and his associates explored the tensions that exist or may soon exist among peer-to-peer start-ups, "pirates" and "hackers," intellectual property companies, established media channels, and unwitting consumers caught in the middle. This research report gives the context for the battleground that has emerged, and calls upon the players to consider new, productive solutions and business models that support profitable, legal access to intellectual property via digital media. by Andrew C Frank. eTO [email protected] Viant Media and Entertainment Reinhold Bel/tIer [email protected] Aaron Markham [email protected] assisted by Bmre Forest ~ VI ANT 1 Call to Arms Well before the Internet. it was known that PCs connected to two-way public networks posed a problem for copyright holders. The problem first came to light when the Software Publishers Association (now the Software & Information Industry Association), with the backing of Microsoft and others, took on computer Bulletin Board System (BBS) operators in the late 1980s for facilitating trade in copyrighted computer software, making examples of "sysops" (as system operators were then known) by assisting the FBI in orchestrat ing raids on their homes. and taking similar legal action against institutional piracy in high profile U.S. businesses and universities.' Thesis (844.6Kb)
ABSTRACT You Should Have Expected Us – An Explanation of Anonymous Alex Gray Director: Linda Adams; PhD Anonymous is a decentralized activist collective that has evolved using the technology of the information age. This paper traces its origins as a way of contextualizing and better understanding its actions. The groups composition is examined using its self‐ascribed imagery to illustrate its’ unique culture and relational norms. Its structure and motivation are analyzed using the framework developed for social movements and terrorist networks. Finally a discussion of a splinter cell and official reaction delineate both strengths and weaknesses of the movement while suggesting its future development. The conclusion serves to expound on the ideal end for the online anonymous community as a new frontier in meritocratic activism. Youtube Star Peter Hollens Debuts “Quarantine Song” to Drive Donations to Combat COVID-19
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE [email protected] 573-201-4104 YouTube Star Peter Hollens Debuts “Quarantine Song” to Drive Donations to Combat COVID-19 #1 Billboard Charting Recording Artist and YouTube Sensation Creates New Musical Parody Using Hit Pop Tunes to Encourage Social Distancing; 100% of Proceeds Raised Will be Donated to No Kid Hungry’s Coronavirus Relief Fund (Los Angeles, CA—April 20, 2020) Peter Hollens, recording artist, American entrepreneur, educator, and classically-trained vocal artist most commonly known for his a cappella music videos on Youtube and Facebook, has debuted the QUARANTINE SONG today to encourage people to stay home to flatten the curve and beat COVID-19. The new song is a 100% charity-driven effort, with proceeds going to support millions of children who have lost healthy meals due to school closures nationwide. “We created this to bring levity and fun to a serious subject, but to also remind people that now is the time to think of others before ourselves. Staying home protects ourselves and our family but also our neighbors, friends and our global community,” said Hollens, who’s popular YouTube channel reaches nearly 3 million subscribers. “Thanks to all of my fellow influencers who are joining me in getting this video out into the world. We’re asking everyone to share this video to spread the word and hopefully slow down the spread of coronavirus.” The QUARANTINE SONG was kickstarted by the launch of Hollens’ latest video, which parodies global superstars, including Lady Gaga, Adele, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa and more with a special guest appearance by Tay Zonday parodying his song “Chocolate Rain” and Evynne Hollens in a singalong encouraging viewers to stay home and practice social distancing when going out.
