Hailey’s basketry has been featured in exhibits highlighting the importance of estuaries. As the medicine carrier for her lineage, Hailey cares deeply for the Earth and her inhabitants. This responsibility fuels Hailey’s actions, including work on new green energy technologies and fundraising for Indigenous artists, Amazonian clean- water access, Guatemalan landslide recovery, and community herbal care, among other causes. Funk the Clock: Transgressing Time While Young, Prescient and Black A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Rahsaan Mahadeo IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Advisers: David Pellow and Joyce Bell August 2019 © 2019 Rahsaan Mahadeo Acknowledgements Pursuing a PhD has at times felt like the most selfish endeavor I have ever undertaken. For I knew that every book I read and every paper I wrote was largely for personal gain. Not coming from academic lineage or economic privilege, I could not escape the profound sense of guilt of leaving so many behind in the everyday struggle to live, labor and learn in a school that is less of a land-grant institution and more of a land-grab institution; an educational system that is more private than public; a corporation that presents students with more educational opportunists than educational opportunities; a sea of scholarship that looks more like colonizer ships; and a tower that is as anti ebony as it is ivory. Most know it as the “U of M,” when it is really the U of empire. Here, I would like to take the opportunity to counter the university’s individualistic and neoliberal logic to thank several people who have helped me cope with the challenges of living, learning and laboring in a space designed without me (and many others) in mind. Thank you to my advisers David Pellow and Joyce Bell for supporting me along my graduate school journey. Though illegible to the university, I recognize and appreciate the inordinate amount of labor you perform inside and outside the classroom.

  • Your Chocolate Rain Are Belonging to Us?': Viral Video
‘All Your Chocolate Rain are Belonging to Us?’: Viral Video, YouTube and the Dynamics of Participatory Culture Jean Burgess Marketers and media producers for the past several years have been racing to capture the marketing potential of both online social networks and user-created content. ‘Viral marketing’, for example, is the attempt to exploit the network effects of word-of-mouth and internet communication to induce a massive number of users to pass on ‘marketing messages and brand information voluntarily’.1 The related term ‘viral video’ has emerged to describe the phenomenon in which video clips become highly popular through rapid, user-led distribution via the internet. How, or whether, the ‘bottom-up’ dynamics of viral video can be mobilised for instrumental purposes—from marketing to political advertising—remains an open question. But ‘viral video’ could be much more than a banal marketing buzzword—in fact, interrogating it a bit more closely in the specific context of YouTube can help us cut through the hype and better understand some of the more complex characteris- tics of participatory popular culture online. In popular usage, the term ‘viral’ (and the related internet ‘meme’) are of course very loosely applied biological metaphors, appropriated from various attempts to develop a science of cultural transmission based on evolutionary theory that have been unfolding for decades. The contested field of ‘memetics’ is the best-known, but by no means only, strand of this kind of 86 JEAN BURGESS : ALL YOUR CHOCOLATE RAIN thinking, which began with Richard Dawkins’ proposal in The Selfish Gene of the ‘meme’ as the corresponding cultural unit to the biological gene.2 Similar to the scientific usage in meaning if not analytical precision, in contemporary popular usage an internet ‘meme‘ is a faddish joke or practice (like a humorous way of captioning cat pictures) that becomes widely imitated.

ABSTRACT You Should Have Expected Us – An Explanation of Anonymous Alex Gray Director: Linda Adams; PhD Anonymous is a decentralized activist collective that has evolved using the technology of the information age. This paper traces its origins as a way of contextualizing and better understanding its actions. The groups composition is examined using its self‐ascribed imagery to illustrate its’ unique culture and relational norms. Its structure and motivation are analyzed using the framework developed for social movements and terrorist networks. Finally a discussion of a splinter cell and official reaction delineate both strengths and weaknesses of the movement while suggesting its future development. The conclusion serves to expound on the ideal end for the online anonymous community as a new frontier in meritocratic activism. The new song is a 100% charity-driven effort, with proceeds going to support millions of children who have lost healthy meals due to school closures nationwide. “We created this to bring levity and fun to a serious subject, but to also remind people that now is the time to think of others before ourselves. Retrieved [date] from http://www.ijea.org/v12n6/. Abstract This case study about a teenage musician, Wade Johnston, suggests how YouTube has affected music consumption, creation, and sharing. A literature review connects education, technology, and media. Informal learning, digital literacy, and twenty-first century technology are also connected in the review. Data reveals how Wade started his channel, gained popularity, interacted with others, and promoted his musical career through YouTube. Original songs, covers, collaborations, documentaries, self- interviews, video blogs (vlogs), and live performances are observed by the researcher. Interviews with the subject, key actors in his life, fans, and first time listeners were transcribed and results were used to triangulate. Previous musical media research is expanded upon to include YouTube and video sharing. The idea of amateur and professional musician, musical venue, and audience member are being changed through YouTube. Current practices of how YouTube is used in the classroom are discussed, and future research is suggested. • The Music Video: from Popular Music to Film and Digital Media
MUSC 499: The Music Video: From Popular Music to Film and Digital Media University of Southern California, Spring 2014 Wednesdays, 6:00pm-9pm THH 202 Instructor: Dr. Richard Brown [email protected] www.richardhbrownjr.com Course Description: Since its emergence in the late 1970s, the music video has become the dominant means of advertising popular music and musicians, as well as one of the most influential multimedia genres in history. Music videos have affected aesthetic style in a wide range of film and television genres, introducing experimental and avant-garde techniques to a mass audience. Because most music videos last only a few minutes, it is difficult to make sense of their often-conflicting images, sounds, and messages. This course challenges participants to read music videos as texts by engaging with their visual and auditory materials. We will explore how the gender, race, and class of video participants shapes meaning, as well as how pacing and editing contribute to (or detract from) a narrative flow. We will also consider the music video in relation to notions of stardom and celebrity, and will speculate on the future of the music video amid drastic changes in the production and marketing of media. The second portion of the course applies these analytical skills to a wide variety of media, including video games, live concert films, film and television music placements, television title sequences and end credits, user generated content, YouTube, remixes and more. Course Materials: There is one required textbook available for free via USC’s electronic Ebook access: Carol Vernallis’ Experiencing Music Video: Aesthetics and Cultural Context (New York: Columbia University Press, 2004).

  • What Makes a Non-Professional Video Go Viral: a Case Study of “I’M Farming and I Grow It”
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by K-State Research Exchange WHAT MAKES A NON-PROFESSIONAL VIDEO GO VIRAL: A CASE STUDY OF “I’M FARMING AND I GROW IT” by LINDSEY ELLIOTT B.S., Kansas State University, 2008 A THESIS submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF SCIENCE A.Q. Miller School of Journalism College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2013 Approved by: Major Professor Dr. Louise Benjamin Abstract In 2013, creating a 57-second video can lead to more than $150,000 in profit for the creator and the creator can be anyone. This money-making opportunity comes from a recent popular trend known as a “viral video,” defined as a phenomenon of a video becoming highly popular through rapid, user-led distribution via the internet. However, research has not determined a clear model for creating a non-professional viral video. Interviews and YouTube analytics revealed how the video “I’m Farming and I Grow It,” a non-professional video created by three Kansas boys, was spread. Using the theories Uses and Gratifications and Two-Step Flow, this case study then analyzed the comments posted on the viral video and a content analysis of the comments identified the key factors mentioned by users, which contributed to the videos’ millions of views. The results conclude the key components for making a non- professional video go viral are “opinion leaders” spreading the message and video content that elicits positive feelings such as joy, humor, or praise.
