  • Aretha Franklin's Gendered Re-Authoring of Otis Redding's
Popular Music (2014) Volume 33/2. © Cambridge University Press 2014, pp. 185–207 doi:10.1017/S0261143014000270 ‘Find out what it means to me’: Aretha Franklin’s gendered re-authoring of Otis Redding’s ‘Respect’ VICTORIA MALAWEY Music Department, Macalester College, 1600 Grand Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55105, USA E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In her re-authoring of Otis Redding’s ‘Respect’, Aretha Franklin’s seminal 1967 recording features striking changes to melodic content, vocal delivery, lyrics and form. Musical analysis and transcription reveal Franklin’s re-authoring techniques, which relate to rhetorical strategies of motivated rewriting, talking texts and call-and-response introduced by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The extent of her re-authoring grants her status as owner of the song and results in a new sonic experience that can be clearly related to the cultural work the song has performed over the past 45 years. Multiple social movements claimed Franklin’s ‘Respect’ as their anthem, and her version more generally functioned as a song of empower- ment for those who have been marginalised, resulting in the song’s complex relationship with feminism. Franklin’s ‘Respect’ speaks dialogically with Redding’s version as an answer song that gives agency to a female perspective speaking within the language of soul music, which appealed to many audiences. Introduction Although Otis Redding wrote and recorded ‘Respect’ in 1965, Aretha Franklin stakes a claim of ownership by re-authoring the song in her famous 1967 recording. Her version features striking changes to the melodic content, vocal delivery, lyrics and form.

  • Taking Intellectual Property Into Their Own Hands
Taking Intellectual Property into Their Own Hands Amy Adler* & Jeanne C. Fromer** When we think about people seeking relief for infringement of their intellectual property rights under copyright and trademark laws, we typically assume they will operate within an overtly legal scheme. By contrast, creators of works that lie outside the subject matter, or at least outside the heartland, of intellectual property law often remedy copying of their works by asserting extralegal norms within their own tight-knit communities. In recent years, however, there has been a growing third category of relief-seekers: those taking intellectual property into their own hands, seeking relief outside the legal system for copying of works that fall well within the heartland of copyright or trademark laws, such as visual art, music, and fashion. They exercise intellectual property self-help in a constellation of ways. Most frequently, they use shaming, principally through social media or a similar platform, to call out perceived misappropriations. Other times, they reappropriate perceived misappropriations, therein generating new creative works. This Article identifies, illustrates, and analyzes this phenomenon using a diverse array of recent examples. Aggrieved creators can use self-help of the sorts we describe to accomplish much of what they hope to derive from successful infringement litigation: collect monetary damages, stop the appropriation, insist on attribution of their work, and correct potential misattributions of a misappropriation. We evaluate the benefits and demerits of intellectual property self-help as compared with more traditional intellectual property enforcement. • Mcgill B Questions By: Annabel Levine, Zach Margolis, Rachael Hardies, Mark Stern
2010 Hybrid Tournament: McGill B Questions by: Annabel Levine, Zach Margolis, Rachael Hardies, Mark Stern Tossups 1. An early queen of this modern-day nation, Anula, had five of her husbands, who all briefly held the throne at some point, murdered before she took the throne for herself in 47 BCE. Elara is titled as the “Just King” in this nation, despite coming from a minority group that invaded 205 BCE, while (*) Devanampiya was the first king to convert to Buddhism after embracing the faith from the missionary Mahinda. The ethnic majority returned to the throne in 463 CE after a rebellion led by Dhatusena against the Six Dravidians, and his son Kashyapa created the fortress of Sigiriya atop a massive rock that surrounds a plain. Invaded several times by the Chola and retaken by the Sinhala, for 10 points, name this modern-day nation whose kingdoms of Kandy and Jaffna fell in the late 18th century to a British rule headquartered at Colombo. ANSWER: Sri Lanka 2. He was thrown out of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell, and Switzerland, and he talks about the people as though he owned them, as though they belonged to him. He speaks out against “the downright villainy of Boss Jim W. Gettys' (*) political machine,” but Gettys gets elected after he exposes this man's “love nest.” This man finishes Jed Leland's negative review of Susan Alexander's opera debut, and a musical tribute to him insists that he be addressed as “Charlie.” He drops a snow globe right before dying, and he collects huge piles of European statues for his Xanadu estate.

INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand marking: or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

Funk the Clock: Transgressing Time While Young, Prescient and Black A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Rahsaan Mahadeo IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Advisers: David Pellow and Joyce Bell August 2019 © 2019 Rahsaan Mahadeo Acknowledgements Pursuing a PhD has at times felt like the most selfish endeavor I have ever undertaken. For I knew that every book I read and every paper I wrote was largely for personal gain. Not coming from academic lineage or economic privilege, I could not escape the profound sense of guilt of leaving so many behind in the everyday struggle to live, labor and learn in a school that is less of a land-grant institution and more of a land-grab institution; an educational system that is more private than public; a corporation that presents students with more educational opportunists than educational opportunities; a sea of scholarship that looks more like colonizer ships; and a tower that is as anti ebony as it is ivory. Most know it as the “U of M,” when it is really the U of empire. Here, I would like to take the opportunity to counter the university’s individualistic and neoliberal logic to thank several people who have helped me cope with the challenges of living, learning and laboring in a space designed without me (and many others) in mind. Thank you to my advisers David Pellow and Joyce Bell for supporting me along my graduate school journey. Though illegible to the university, I recognize and appreciate the inordinate amount of labor you perform inside and outside the classroom.

  • Your Chocolate Rain Are Belonging to Us?': Viral Video
‘All Your Chocolate Rain are Belonging to Us?’: Viral Video, YouTube and the Dynamics of Participatory Culture Jean Burgess Marketers and media producers for the past several years have been racing to capture the marketing potential of both online social networks and user-created content. ‘Viral marketing’, for example, is the attempt to exploit the network effects of word-of-mouth and internet communication to induce a massive number of users to pass on ‘marketing messages and brand information voluntarily’.1 The related term ‘viral video’ has emerged to describe the phenomenon in which video clips become highly popular through rapid, user-led distribution via the internet. How, or whether, the ‘bottom-up’ dynamics of viral video can be mobilised for instrumental purposes—from marketing to political advertising—remains an open question. But ‘viral video’ could be much more than a banal marketing buzzword—in fact, interrogating it a bit more closely in the specific context of YouTube can help us cut through the hype and better understand some of the more complex characteris- tics of participatory popular culture online. In popular usage, the term ‘viral’ (and the related internet ‘meme’) are of course very loosely applied biological metaphors, appropriated from various attempts to develop a science of cultural transmission based on evolutionary theory that have been unfolding for decades. The contested field of ‘memetics’ is the best-known, but by no means only, strand of this kind of 86 JEAN BURGESS : ALL YOUR CHOCOLATE RAIN thinking, which began with Richard Dawkins’ proposal in The Selfish Gene of the ‘meme’ as the corresponding cultural unit to the biological gene.2 Similar to the scientific usage in meaning if not analytical precision, in contemporary popular usage an internet ‘meme‘ is a faddish joke or practice (like a humorous way of captioning cat pictures) that becomes widely imitated.

  • “Bo Diddley” and “I'm a Man” (1955)
“Bo Diddley” and “I’m a Man” (1955) Added to the National Registry: 2011 Essay by Ed Komara (guest post)* Bo Diddley While waiting in Bo Diddley’s house to conduct an interview for the February 12, 1987 issue of “Rolling Stone,” journalist Kurt Loder noticed a poster. “If You Think Rock and Roll Started With Elvis,” it proclaimed, “You Don’t Know Diddley.” This statement seems exaggerated, but upon listening to Diddley’s April 1955 debut 78 on Checker 814, “Bo Diddley” backed with “I’m A Man,” it becomes apt, perhaps even understated. Bo Diddley (1928-2008) described his own place in music history to Loder. “People wouldn’t even bother with no stuff like ‘Bo Diddley’ and ‘I’m A Man’ and stuff like that ten years earlier [circa 1945] or even a year earlier [1954]. Then Leonard and Phil Chess decided to take a chance, and suddenly a whole different scene, a different kind of music, came in. And that was the beginning of rock and roll.” The composer credit for Checker 814 reads “E. McDaniels,” and there begins the tale. Bo Diddley was born Ellas Otha Bates in McComb, Mississippi on December 30, 1928 to a teenage mother and her local boyfriend. He was raised, however, by his maternal first cousin, Gussie McDaniel, to whom he was taken to Chicago, and given her surname McDaniel. He grew up on the South Side of the city, where he learned violin, trombone and, at age 12, the guitar. Before long, he was playing for change on the local streets.

ABSTRACT You Should Have Expected Us – An Explanation of Anonymous Alex Gray Director: Linda Adams; PhD Anonymous is a decentralized activist collective that has evolved using the technology of the information age. This paper traces its origins as a way of contextualizing and better understanding its actions. The groups composition is examined using its self‐ascribed imagery to illustrate its’ unique culture and relational norms. Its structure and motivation are analyzed using the framework developed for social movements and terrorist networks. Finally a discussion of a splinter cell and official reaction delineate both strengths and weaknesses of the movement while suggesting its future development. The conclusion serves to expound on the ideal end for the online anonymous community as a new frontier in meritocratic activism.
