Database of Irish Historical Statistics - Language Notes 1 Language Notes on Language (Barony) From the census of 1851 onwards information was sought on those who spoke Irish only and those bi-lingual. However the presentation of language data changes from one census to the next between 1851 and 1871 but thereafter remains the same (1871-1891). Spatial Unit Table Name Barony lang51_bar Barony lang61_bar Barony lang71_91_bar County lang01_11_cou Barony geog_id (spatial code book) County county_id (spatial code book) Notes on Baronies of Ireland 1821-1891 Baronies are sub-division of counties their administrative boundaries being fixed by the Act 6 Geo. IV., c 99. Their origins pre-date this act, they were used in the assessments of local taxation under the Grand Juries. Over time many were split into smaller units and a few were amalgamated. Townlands and parishes - smaller units - were detached from one barony and allocated to an adjoining one at vaious intervals. This the size of many baronines changed, albiet not substantially. Furthermore, reclamation of sea and loughs expanded the land mass of Ireland, consequently between 1851 and 1861 Ireland increased its size by 9,433 acres. The census Commissioners used Barony units for organising the census data from 1821 to 1891. These notes are to guide the user through these changes. From the census of 1871 to 1891 the number of subjects enumerated at this level decreased In addition, city and large town data are also included in many of the barony tables. • Volume 4 - Environmental Report
Waterford County Development Plan 2011-2017 Plean Forbartha Chontae Phort Láirge 2011-2017 Volume 4 - Environmental Report Waterford County Council STRATEGIC ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT STATEMENT WATERFORD COUNTY DEVELOPMENT PLAN REVIEW 2011 - 2017 February 2011 Waterford County Council Comhairle Chontae Port Láirge SEA Statement An Environmental Report was prepared by Waterford County Council on the potential significant environmental impacts of the Draft County Waterford Development Plan 2011-2017. Alternatives were considered for the future growth of the county that included continuing with existing amount of zoning in the County Development Plan 2005-2011 or reducing the area of zoned land in support of objectives in the Regional Planning Guidelines, Water Framework Directive and national energy policy. The preferred strategy was a reduction in zoned land to an area of 461 ha for residential development. Publication of the South East Regional Planning Guidelines 2010-2022 and provisions of the Planning Act 2000 (as amended) has stipulated the need for alignment of the Core Strategy with the Regional Planning Guidelines population thresholds and consequently a review of the Core Strategy contained in the Draft County Development Plan will commence in 2011. The Environmental Report highlighted key environmental pressures in the county that include water quality with the need to restore surface water quality in Dungarvan Bay, and Waterford Estuary, groundwaters around the River Suir, bathing waters in Ardmore and Dunmore East, continued monitoring of public water supplies and provision of sufficient capacity in waste water treatment plants and the Seven Villages Scheme. The need to maintain water quality is key to conservation of biodiversity and water dependant habitats and species.

  • The Place-Names of County Kilkenny Acknowledgement the Kilkenny Archaeological Society Is Grateful to Mrs Sheila O ’Kelly for Permission to Re-Issue This Book
The Place-Names of County Kilkenny Acknowledgement The Kilkenny Archaeological Society is grateful to Mrs Sheila O ’Kelly for permission to re-issue this book. Notice On mature reflection the Commitee of the Society has decided to change the title of Owen O ’Kelly’s book from A History of County Kilkenny to The Place-Names of the County of Kilkenny. The new title is thought more exactly to describe the book. An alphabetical index has been added. Within the new material, Owen O ’Kelly’s book is reproduced complete and unaltered. The map on the cover (also reproduced inside) is made from a Grand Jury map. The Grand Juries were the forerunners of the County Councils. They commissioned maps which are now extremely rare. The Grand Jury maps predate the first edition of the Ordnance Survey maps and are of great interest because of the different spellings of place names. Thus they can be used to locate changes that have occurred. The Place-Names of the COUNTY of KILKENNY The Kilkenny Archaeological Society Rothe House K ilk en n y © The Kilkenny Archaeological Society and Mrs Sheila O ’Kelly, 1985. ISBN 0 9501687 8 5 Printed by BOETHIUS PRESS Kilkenny FOREWORD The publication of my late husband’s history of the place-names of Kilkenny is a re-issue of a work that was originally published in 1969 but has long since gone out of print and is very difficult to obtain. Many years of painstaking research and dedication went into the compilation of the original. But the task was of compelling interest to him and he would have been deeply gratified and proud that his book on the place-names is being republished by the Kilkenny Archaeological Society.

  • Summary Report 2008
Sampling Fish for the Water Framework Directive A Summary of the Central Fisheries Board’s Surveillance Monitoring for Fish in Lakes, Rivers and Transitional Waters 2008 Summary Report 2008 …. WFD Summary Report 2008 Chairman’s Statement In December 2000, the European Union introduced the Water Framework Directive (WFD) as part of a new standard approach for all countries to manage their water resources and to protect aquatic ecosystems. The fundamental objectives of the WFD, which was transposed into Irish Law in December 2003, are to protect and maintain the status of waters that are already of good or high quality, to prevent any further deterioration and to restore all waters that are impaired so that they achieve at least good status by 2015. The Water Framework Directive staff in the Central Fisheries Board work closely with other sister agencies, national and international organisations, academic institutions and our parent Department, the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources. 2008 was a very challenging and rewarding year for the scientists working on the Water Framework Directive. It was one of the wettest summers in almost 50 years, which hampered the ability to conduct field research, yet despite this, the project proceeded and met the key goals and objectives. This report summarises achievements against these key objectives delivered by the WFD staff of the Research and Development Division of the Central Fisheries Board. The Board are equally delighted and proud to have such committed, experienced and highly qualified scientists working across all research disciplines within inland fisheries. However, without the support and commitment of the management and staff in the Regional Fisheries Boards, it would not be possible to undertake many of the key objectives reported in this document.

  • The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers
THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.
